I was wondering if any of our Penn St visitors could help us with one of the original questions brought up in this thread. That is, how much is Akron getting for this game? The only figure ($800,000) I can find is based purely on conjecture (link). I know Florida Atlantic got that figure recently. If anyone can confirm or deny, please do.Link (scroll a little past half way)

Welcome 84 If that number signifies a graduation class, then I am from the same vintage (the difference being UA variety, of course). I'm also a native Pennsylvanian, who became a college football fanatic even prior to being a Zip follower when I first came to school here. If you can fondly recall the days of ABC college football on a leaf-blown, fall Saturday afternoon, culminated by the incomparable Prudential College Football Scoreboard (Ohio U grad Dave Dials running the show), then we have common ground indeed. In the interest of full disclosure, however, I must mention that there was another team in Pennsylvania that caught my fancy at an early age and I was fortunate to have experienced several of their home games in the National Championshop year of 1976. I wound up taking a slightly unusual path towards a pursuit in engineering, deciding that I'd be better off a few hours from home in Akron as opposed to being a "commuter". I haven't regretted my decision in the least. But we were supposed to be talking about the UA-PSU game. I am glad to see that you will at least offer that there is a "chance" Akron could pull off the upset. It seems as though quite a few of your fellow PSU fans do not share this opinion. Note, when I say "chance" I am not assigning any particular probability. I think it's been a little misunderstood, that when some of us Zip fans think we have a "chance" in this game that it somehow follows that we "expect" to win. I doubt there are many Zip fans who would say the probability of a Zip victory is 0.5 or above (of course, it's the coaches job to make sure that the PLAYERS believe this however). On the other hand, I don't think you'd find many Zip fans who would put the probability at 0.0, where it seems some of the PSU fans think it should be. Most of us are fully aware of the task at hand. Penn State is a powerful program (you had the decency to leave out the 70-24 debacle in 1999.......you could have said THREE of Akron's Big-10 losses were to PSU by a combined 152-40) and it will take exceptional effort and execution on the part of the Zips to make this a game, and it will most likely take a sub-par performance by the Lions to put the upset within reach. For everyone's sake, I hope the Zips play well and if the Nittany Lions still manage to win the game handily, then you'll get nothing but congratulations from me.BTW, while the Big-10 is obviously significantly stronger than the MAC, I'd still take the Big-12 or PAC-10 over the Big-10 a this point. It's just an opinion.Edit: After thinking about it, I've decided the PAC-10 and Big-10 are about equal. But neither is up to the SEC or Bg 12.

While Florida hasn't been particularly fruitful (ha ha) for us lately, we wouldn't have landed Bowser or MH Tonga without those Cali trips!

I say BUY BUY BUY. Before you discount Baylor, consider that many feel they have one of the more exciting players in the country to watch in sophomore QB Robert Griffin.

Thanks for stopping by, Vikings fan, and good luck to Portland State in the Big Sky this year Seriously, psu1, we don't get many visitors from BCS conferences here on our modest MAC message board. But you are welcome to stop by any time.Go Zips!!!

It looks like we might be getting some Penn St. traffic here pretty soon, which is pretty cool of course. The one PSU fan seems to equate some of us actually having the audacity to think we have a chance in this game to us being "pretty confident".CBS Sportsline Link

uakronkid, you seem to have the Penn Staters in a tizzy over there. Gotta love it Hehe. I've been trying to get PSU fans to actually think about Akron instead of just blowing us off as a warmup for Syracuse who they believe is a far better team.you should ask them on their board about when they overlooked Toledo and what happened I'm saving that one for a little bit closer to kickoff.I haven't been able to get permission to post on their Scout board, I don't have an established rivals account, and the Pennlive.com board is so terribly designed that it's almost unusable. So I'm sticking with the ESPN conversation.I've been trying to drum up some conversation on cbssportsline too. And I even dropped the P word (Pinkel) but so far no bites.

I think I know the problem at the Orlando Sentinel, and it's NOT residual bad blood from the Eastern Conference Finals. No it's something different entirely. They STILL think Zeke is attending the University of Arizona ZN Link

Nice post ZB. I have never been so anxious to see a defensive line play. I hope I'm not disappointed. I think this group is the one that can push us over the top.I'll agree 100%. The possibilities for the DL are intriguing the heck out of me. While I remain hopeful that we'll see huge improvement here, I'm still haunted by predictions of Nate Robinson being MAC defensive player of the year. Maybe I'll get over that once the season starts and I witness some QB pressures/sacks right off the bat.As much as the talent is intriguing, I'm REALLY pumped to see the difference a coach like Vince Okruch can make. Let's say the DL at least plays substantially better, garnering the full attention of most OL's. Now can you imagine how effective a player like Shawn Lemon could be as a blitzing LB during passing situations? Lemon got decent pressure as an undersized DE many times last year. He might really blossom in this scenario.

This is probably a stupid question, but I'll ask it anyway. When did the Wayne Branch get a hoops team?BTW, NAIA D-1 Malone is generally more on-par with an NCAA D-2 school, than an NCAA D-3 school (as I assume UA-Wayne would be, if indeed they have a program).http://www.wayne.uakron.edu/ss_athletics.htmThey have volleyball, men's and women's basketball, and golf.Since Malone is NAIA the game doesn't count for either team's record or RPI. If we're going to play a game that doesn't count for anything, Wayne makes too much sense.Very cool! So 2009-2010 is the 1st season for Men's Hoops? Although in the write-up, it looks like UA-Wayne plays in a league that is even below D-3. I realize the game doesn't count, but there is some argument for at least playing a team that will make you work a little. But I do see your point as far as keeping the funds "in-house".

While they may have received upgrades in 1998, both MTSU's Floyd Stadium and Utah's Rice-Eccles Stadium have been around for much longer (although Rice-Eccles was essentially rebuilt in near entirety for the Winter Olympics).Floyd WikiRice-Eccles Wiki

Is Akron already behind in the recruiting race?
johnnyzip84 replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
I agree that it's way too early to be concerned. And it's great to hear that about Henderson (although not surpising after seeing the clips of him returning kicks in HS)!! BTW, I am sure that all of us at ZN would love to hear any more inside info you might have on Chris. Please let us in! -
This is a repeat of another post on another thread, but you don't even mention DT Ryan Bain in this evaluation. That's a pretty big oversite. Not a total repeat but I finished all the MAC schools... Sorry for the oversight..I meant that my comment is a repeat. Sorry for the confusion and thanks for putting forth the effort

Who scores the first touchdown at the info?

Ahhh "the field" is always a good choice in terms of probability. But it so much less interesting, good Dr. -

johnnyzip84 replied to g-mann17's topic in Akron Zips Football
I voted "other".At exactly one week after the Zips defeat the Morgan State Bears 12-3, Indiana RB Bryan Payton will score the first TD at the InfoJUST KIDDINGActually I have a feeling that, in spite of the talent we already have stock-piled at the position, JC transfer Jeremy LaFrance is going to have a very nice 2009 season. It starts with him catching a 43-yard TD from Jacq with 8:33 remaining in the 1st quarter at the Info for the 1st TD at our new place. It will look a lot like the one in the following link.Link -
Good Zips News, if You Like Defense
johnnyzip84 replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
Looks like someone needs to quit spending so much time on Bucknuts and a little more time paying closer attention to the Zips I do agree, as I stated in a previous post, that the Zips need to take advantage of the depth they have at DL. However, when the a tight game is on the line in the 4th quarter, I want the best players on the field. IMHO the depth is best served over the course of a game so that the "starters" are fresh when needed the most.If anyone doesn't think that Henderson, true freshmen or not, won't be a factor this season (assuming he is eligible and stays healthy), then they must not have seen the video on all the recruits of 2009. I know it's just a highlight tape, but this guy looked unbelievable. If he plays in 2009, he WILL be a stud. -
Congrats once again, zipseuph! One little tidbit I can offer that might interest you is that the moving plans for Ohio Brewing are starting to sound a little more solid. They're supposedly moving the restaurant/brewpub portion to a much smaller place down Main (across from Canal Park) and the production equipment into yet another building farther down the street. This will allow them to bette meet the demands for their beer as they've recently secured a distribution contract with Tramonte's. Best of luck to you in your service duties!

Correct. I SHOULD have said, can you imagine a front FOUR of Sewell, Bain, Henderson and Tonga! The Purple People Eaters, Steel Curtain, and Fearsome Foursome might have a little company -
Akron #93 on the NY Times football countdown

They may be slow and lumbering, but the Tufts Jumbos sure can stuff the line of scrimmage. And they'll do just about anything for -
That's awesome, ZM!

Wow, I sure hope so! If he does, I also hope Fleming and company aren't shy about putting he and Bain on the field at the same time, at least on some occasions (I know you have to keep guys fresh and take advantage of our considerable depth as well). Can you imagine a front three of Sewell, Bain, and Henderson?Furthermore, how effective could Shawn Lemon be blitzing from a LB spot with those three guys in front of him? Could our dreams of an effective pass rush be coming into fruition??? -
