  1. Of course we are not playing the Quakers. We are playing the Mighty & Fearless Penn State Nittany Lions. Everyone is afraid of you . You are invincible. We know what we’re up against. We know of your historical accomplishments. We know you think of us as a “cupcake” opponent. We know of your highly touted QB. But we do not fear you. As a matter of fact You Had Better FEAR THE ROO.This game will be analogous to the Real biblical story of David and Goliath (you being Goliath, and us ZIPS being David). The common misconception of the face-off between the giant Goliath and the young boy David, was that, David (armed only with a slingshot a pouch full of stones) reached into his bag and slung one of his stones at Goliath's head. Finding a hole in Goliath’s armor, the stone sank into the giant’s forehead and he fell face down on the ground. David then took Goliath's sword, killed him and then cut off his head. But that’s the fairy tale biblical story for children. But back to the Real biblical story of David and Goliath. (you being Goliath, and us ZIPS being David). What really happened… David fearlessly stood his ground, his strong legs and sandaled feet planted firmly in the dirt. When the giant criticized, insulted and threatened, David didn't stop or even waver. He stared straight into the Giant Goliath’s eyes. And then…., David reached down and removed one of his sandals, and then…, David leapt mightily into the air, hovering momentarily right smack in front of Goliath’s face, and then, and then…, he took his sandal and BITCH-SLAPPED that Giant because we all know that PSU is still our Bit..h, and always will be. We know who we’re playing. Do you?, You little bi…. Slapped losers. ZIPS RULE. AKRON 28PSU 6May I be the first to nominate this for the Zipsnation HOF? As Steve French might say......."outstanding"!!
  2. You beat me by 11 minutes on this one!! Nice job I was just about to post the same story as you too I would have enjoyed seeing the expressions on the coaching staff after the 2nd sub 4.3 forty!
  3. That's a good list, but don't ask me how one leaves off Miami's 21-12 defeat of LSU in Baton Rouge during the 1986 season. The Bengal Tigers would go on to finish 9-3 as SEC champs that same year.LinkI believe his list consisted of season openers. It would be nice to be on the list. Ahhh my mistake. Thanks UADavid! I'm sure a simple list of MAC "giant killings" would be considerably longer.
  4. That's a good list, but don't ask me how one leaves off Miami's 21-12 defeat of LSU in Baton Rouge during the 1986 season. The Bengal Tigers would go on to finish 9-3 as SEC champs that same year.Link
  5. +1 MY seat during game day!!! Go Zips!!!!
  6. That's one of my favorite sites, since it captures each of the major publication's predictions is a succinct manner. It is intersting that not ONE picked UA to win the East however. With as wide-open as it seems to be this year, you'd think one would have gone with the Zips.
  7. Zips will crash the "party" But I have to admit......you Nittany Lions ARE #1! Top Party School LinkPSU 523,813 beers, 27 pointsUA 1,133 beers, 31 points
  8. I think you are mixing up your Lemons...I don't think so. Shawn was moved from the line to a LB (or LB/safety hybrid apparently) after last season. Here's a question. How did we end up with not one, but TWO transfers from St. Francis (Pa) in DT Antoine Jones and WR Troy Eison (Captain's secret weapon)??
  9. Hmmm looks like I'm DEFINITELY going to have to make the trip down to Orrville to watch the Northwest Indians take on the Red Riders and these two in the opener
  10. I would add that we might see a good battle for Zip placekicker (incumbent Igor Iveljic vs challenger Bronco Rogovic). I was even thinking about starting a separate thread for it. Even though Rodgers apparently has the intrigue of Walt Harris, the QB spot will be hard to take from Jacq.
  11. Wow!! He has a pretty impressive list of offers. Here is the scoutingohio.com linkLinkI think it's safe to say that the Info really helped with this kid if he indeed has verballed?
  12. A little wallaby told me Zippy is up to 183 lbs/87% body fat.
  13. My follow up comment is part tongue-in-cheek and part serious. My son and I were shooting baskets the other day, and we were talking about some of the old NBA greats. Before long a few "sky hooks" are being attempted and we both started to wonder why no "big" ever really picked up the shot after Kareem. Now I realise Jabbar was a very unique athlete in his day and I suspect that a large percentage of players wouldn't be able to shoot a high percentage no matter how much they practiced it. But does it make any sense that the main weapon of the SECOND LEADING SCORER IN NBA HISTORY has never really been incorporated as a major portion of any other player's game? In my mind this is tantamount to the Fosbury Flop being largely ignored in high jumping or the V-style being disdained in ski jumping, despite the success found in each of these sports with these unorthodox (until then), yet innovative methods. Perhaps the answer lies with the dominance of the three-point shot. But is there really NO PLACE for this shot in the game today? I'm just wondering.
  14. Oh yeah!!!!!!
  15. Awe heck, I'll even throw in no untimely biological events
  16. I see you're GameChngr44 now You're ready for the season!
  17. That's funny, UA Fan! Right now, without the forfeits, JoePa is up on Bobby by one game. Even if you guys beat us, I think Penn State will recover enough to win more games than FSU for the rest of 2009. FSU owes Jimbo $5M if he is not coach "by" 2010 (not sure if "by" 2010 means 1 Jan or beginning of spring training or . . . . ). I don't know if FSU will part with that kind of cash just so BB can linger. Joe sure doesn't talk about retiring, and Penn State has not anointed a head coach in waiting. (My pick would be Larry Johnson.)Don't all you Zip fans run up all the prices on the scalped tix. This is my 25th anniversary of my grad year -- I am getting the urge to walk the auld sod again, but don't want to spend my sons' tuition to do so.Am enjoying the conversation with you guys -- looking forward to it heating up as we get closer to 5 Sep.Lions_84 (using the "Lions" part to avoid confusion with JohnnyZip84 -- great minds think alike!)Thanks Lions-84 I'm not sure there will be enough Akron ticket demand to affect the going rate, but you never know I suppose. That's some interesting speculation on the Bowden/Paterno battle. From what I've read it sounds like Bobby will be leaving after this season regardless. So my money's on Joe. Thinking about Joe's eventual successor lead me to another thought. Will Penn State ever deviate from those awful "practice" uniforms down the road? Hey, I understand that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder and I also appreciate the power of "tradition" but I've never been a big fan of the plain blue and white. My HS in Pittsburgh used to use the same unis back in the day, but they've moved onto a much more elaborate design since I graduated. I have to figure that the vast majority of PSU fans would prefer to keep the unis as is, but I wonder what you guys here think.
  18. Great idea! Here is my quick modification of the old Devo hit "Whip It". I figure the Devo/Akron connection couldn't hurt either. We'll ignore the whole Can't St art student thing Let’s go Zips!give the past the slip no time to crack gotta win the MACwhen a rival comes along you must Zip it before their QB hoists one long you must Zip it when JD says it’s wrong you must Zip it now Zip it get in shape beat ‘em up throw straight run forward use your head try to deflect it it's not too late to Zip it Zip it good when the Hoosiers come around you must Zip it oh yes the Big 10 is in town so let’s Zip it no team gets away until we Zip it i say Zip it Zip it good i say Zip it Zip it good
  19. Perhaps that should be "The Venue Formerly Know as the Rubber Bowl"Love the pics. Thanks Rowdy!
  20. Zeke is learning how to "transition" from high school student/athlete to college student/athlete. I know that he is working REALLY, REALLY hard and is very busy between conditioning, classes and open gyms. Thanks for looking out. I cant wait for the season to start...Gettin my jersey made now...#44 MARSHALL...Wooo Hoooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!You know, I'm not sure if you've considered it or not, but if you ask one of the moderators I'm pretty sure they could change your ZN screename to GameChngr44. It's just a thought
  21. That's another excellent article Momma Zeke, I hope he's enjoying summer classes and his initial time on campus!
  22. The Beacon's Tom Gaffney wrote an article discussing Zip football activities as they prepare for the season. Among the items of interest that caught my eye:1) JD plans to practice at the Info beginning on August 6.2) Bain still has lingering back issues, but is expected to play. Brookhart says they need to be "smart" with him. I wonder if that may mean he sees limited action against PSU?BJ Link
  23. Thanks for the input, PSU1. I was going to post on the CBSSports site -- somebody probably knows the exact number . . . .That sounds low to me. I realize that each contract situation is different, but I think we got $650,000 from Wisconsin last year.
  24. I was wondering if any of our Penn St visitors could help us with one of the original questions brought up in this thread. That is, how much is Akron getting for this game? The only figure ($800,000) I can find is based purely on conjecture (link). I know Florida Atlantic got that figure recently. If anyone can confirm or deny, please do.Link (scroll a little past half way)
  25. Welcome 84 If that number signifies a graduation class, then I am from the same vintage (the difference being UA variety, of course). I'm also a native Pennsylvanian, who became a college football fanatic even prior to being a Zip follower when I first came to school here. If you can fondly recall the days of ABC college football on a leaf-blown, fall Saturday afternoon, culminated by the incomparable Prudential College Football Scoreboard (Ohio U grad Dave Dials running the show), then we have common ground indeed. In the interest of full disclosure, however, I must mention that there was another team in Pennsylvania that caught my fancy at an early age and I was fortunate to have experienced several of their home games in the National Championshop year of 1976. I wound up taking a slightly unusual path towards a pursuit in engineering, deciding that I'd be better off a few hours from home in Akron as opposed to being a "commuter". I haven't regretted my decision in the least. But we were supposed to be talking about the UA-PSU game. I am glad to see that you will at least offer that there is a "chance" Akron could pull off the upset. It seems as though quite a few of your fellow PSU fans do not share this opinion. Note, when I say "chance" I am not assigning any particular probability. I think it's been a little misunderstood, that when some of us Zip fans think we have a "chance" in this game that it somehow follows that we "expect" to win. I doubt there are many Zip fans who would say the probability of a Zip victory is 0.5 or above (of course, it's the coaches job to make sure that the PLAYERS believe this however). On the other hand, I don't think you'd find many Zip fans who would put the probability at 0.0, where it seems some of the PSU fans think it should be. Most of us are fully aware of the task at hand. Penn State is a powerful program (you had the decency to leave out the 70-24 debacle in 1999.......you could have said THREE of Akron's Big-10 losses were to PSU by a combined 152-40) and it will take exceptional effort and execution on the part of the Zips to make this a game, and it will most likely take a sub-par performance by the Lions to put the upset within reach. For everyone's sake, I hope the Zips play well and if the Nittany Lions still manage to win the game handily, then you'll get nothing but congratulations from me.BTW, while the Big-10 is obviously significantly stronger than the MAC, I'd still take the Big-12 or PAC-10 over the Big-10 a this point. It's just an opinion.Edit: After thinking about it, I've decided the PAC-10 and Big-10 are about equal. But neither is up to the SEC or Bg 12.
