.....and put a plexiglass roof over it so it could be renamed the "Con-Dome"

Andy Robinson is a senior. He's the one who used facebook to try to pay someone $40 to write a book report for him...Yeah, you're right. The guy I was trying to describe is UB freshman Titus Robinson -- from Charlotte, NC. He's already an impact player, as is the guy from Phoenix, whose name I think is Mitchell Watt. They're both about 6-9 and can move.In any case, Buffalo managed to scratch out another last second victory, their second in as many nights 62-60 against Colorado tonight. The Bulls did play much better than on Sunday versus Pepperdine. They led by double-figures at halftime, and though the lead was slowly chipped away, I don't believe UC ever led, though it was tied more than once. Buffalo got the ball with 8 seconds remaining after Colorado tied it up. Calvin Betts drove through an open top of the key, and pulled up and swished about a ten-footer for the go-ahead basket with 0.5 left. UB tipped the last-ditch pass to pick up their ticket to the Rainbow Classic championship game on Tuesday night against Colorado State. They will be favored, but its a wide-open final. I am impressed with Buffalo's experienced-looking offense, which makes few turnovers, allowing their strong half-court D to give them a chance to defeat bigger and more athletic teams. Got to shake Reggie Witherspoon's hand after the win. I'll pull for the MAC team, until Jan 13, at which time they'd better have learned the Humpty Dance. Zip in Paradise,Honolulu, HI I know these sentiments have been expressed before, but it is AWESOME to get these kind of "in person" reports from Zips in Hawaii or whereever Thanks for the UB scouting report. From the sound of things, they'll provide plenty of challenge for the Zips, especially our interior D.Oh, and since you and I are both pulling for UB to win THIS tourney, make sure Witherspoon doesn't start wearing one of THESE for good luck Better yet, maybe you could give one to him as a "present" after the game against CSU!

That was one theory I had in mind

Just got back from the game and a few tasty pizza pies at Luigi's. The result (game) was not exactly what I expected, but these things can happen to a young team I suppose. Here are a few thoughts.1) If I'm a MAC coach, I play zone against the Zips until they show me they they can beat it. Our zone offense right now is really, really bad.2) For a Senior that his team depends on quite a bit during crunch time, Nate still makes some silly mistakes that make you shake your head.3) Jimmy Conyers might be the most important player on the team at present.4) Chris McKnight seems to be getting lost in the shuffle a bit. I wonder of he is playing at 100% yet?5) There are still enough parts and pieces on this squad for KD to have them make a run in the MAC tourney when it counts. But, I think he's going to have to settle on his rotations pretty soon for this to be possible.Go Zips!!!

I'm not sure, but I think this may only be the case for "priority reserve" seating. That sure does suck that it's such a runaround to purchase something for which UA should be rolling out the red carpet.

Oh, that's right, we'll be leaving this sorry conference soon, therefore its relative standing in the FBS is of no consequence to us

It's over, FAU 24 - CMU 21. Not a good effort from the Chips. Hopefully Northern, Western, Ball St. and Buffalo will play much better.
-
CMU trying to make it interesting. They are down 24-21 with 3:09 left in the game and are now kicking off. There have definitely been some odd coaching decisions by Butch Jones tonight.

I've stayed away from this discussion, because I do see it as being a largely futile exercize. BUT, it has made me consider something that comes to mind now and then. From a purely HOOPS perspective, is it BENEFICIAL or DETRIMENTAL for a school to also have a FBS football program?Advantages:1) Higher sports profile (more TV exposure in all sports) may be helpful in recruiting2) Higher profile football programs (Big12/SEC/Pac-10) often run surpluses that can buoy an entire athletic budgetDisadvantages:1) Schools w/o football can focus their efforts on hoops as a "flagship" program2) Lower profile football programs (MAC/WAC/Sunbelt) often run deficits that can bring down the entire athletic budgetWhat does anyone else think? I think it might be just a little easier to build a hoops program in a mid-major, hoops only conference.

24-13 with 9 minutes left. FAU's QB Rusty Smith, despite having IMmobility that rivals Jacq, is looking like an NFL prospect. Does anyone know of any exercizes we can get Jacq to do to improve arm strength? This Smith has a gun, and it really makes up for the lack of mobility. And BTW, there is NFW Lefevour plays in the NFL IMHO. He is clearly a product of the spread and that's it.
-
Central better come on strong in the remaining 11 minutes, or it's going to be a bad start to bowl season for the MAC. Chips are down 17-13 to 6-6 FAU from the Sunbelt. I'm not sure if they've recovered from the Ball St. game yet.

I just saw him apply some pressure on CMU's Lefevour (who is looking pretty mortal tonight). Do you suppose Rivals (or Scout, I forget which one at the moment) might take him off of the Akron commit list now?

'Twas the Night Before Christmas - Zip Style
johnnyzip84 replied to johnnyzip84's topic in Akron Zips Football
Thanks, Zipsrifle Let's hope JD fills his stocking with a couple more highly rated recruits over the next few weeks -
And a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you, Cap'n, the rest of the team of moderators and all members of ZN!

I didn't mean to appear to be the alarmist. I just don't like seeing Can't assemble more talent the likes of these guys. 6'5" WRs don't grow on trees. Let's hope Doogie keeps screwing it up on the field, but there's no denying that the TALENT level over there has been pretty good and steadily rising lately.Perhaps I'm wrong, but I think MDZip's comment was in reference to him "sleeping at the wheel"
-
This means HALF of ALL black FBS head coaches are working in the MAC. It also means that 23% of all MAC HC's are black. I'll be very curious to see how this affects recruiting over the next few years. I think the MAC has a special opportunity right now to forge a unique and diverse identity, particularly when it comes to football. I don't expect success all around, but I predict it WILL be a net gain for the conference.ESPN Link

I sure hope nobody slept in this graduation day
-
Since MDZip was asleep at the wheel I looked for a few articles that covered the recent Crab Bowl. I found one in the Baltimore Sun that indicates Farr may have picked up a recent offer from ECU. I hope this doesn't change things.LinkSpeaking of big receivers, did we even recruit Coventry's Jeff Walker who is a Rivals 3-star verbal to Can't? The flushes also picked up another Walker, this one a 4-star LB from Chatham, VA. I know it's early, but Rivals now has Can't with the top rated MAC class

I think English is an excellent hire for EMU and I wish him well there, save for intra-divisional tilts with Akron.I also happen to agree with Sir Charles and GP1 on the way Gill was treated in the Auburn hiring process. And if time proves the three of us to have been correct I believe the fall-out could be huge, particularly in terms of recruiting in the south. The one additional, necessary catalyst for this change to occur is the hiring of more black head coaches period. IF THAT OCCURS I believe the head coaching landscape might begin to take on an obviously "regional" bias (i.e. the new black head coaches concentrated in the mid-west, east, and west coast). Think of the impact THAT could have on southern recruiting. If I'm a talented African-American from Georgia or Florida, but I'm concerned about how HC's are hired in the SEC, don't you think I might consider playing up north (or west or east)? The MAC, with 2 black HC's out of 13 (15%), could certainly benefit from this perception. This is just another reason why I hope for continued success for Gill at UB (except against the Zips) and for English to have success in turning EMU around. It's my opinion (and I'm honestly not trying to jam it down anyone's throat) that schools like Auburn are truly limiting themselves, if they are indeed altering their hiring criteria to exclude or raise the bar for anyone based on anything other than what they can bring to the football field.

Great to see Reggie Corner, just now on ESPN's highlights, making by far his biggest play in his NFL career thus far by knocking the ball out of Brandon Stokley's hands in the end zone to preserve the Bills' 30-23 victory over the Broncos in Denver. This play kept Denver from clinching the AFC West and a playoff spot. Way to go Reggie!ESPN Link

New Commit is a Gem

You think this guy could end up being a marquis player? -
Speaking of Old Bay, has anyone ever tried Herr' s Old Bay potato chips (link)?LinkWell they're not exactly crab cakes from Phillips, but to those of us who don't have access to Chesapeake cuisine locally it's a nice, inexpensive reminder of that region. Ocean City remains one of my favorite places.

I preface my opinion on this "so you're a buckeye" debate with saying that OSU is my 120th favorite FBS team, and will always remain at the bottom. They're basically my least favorite team in all college sports. You don't have to agree with me, but that's my right and I will defend it vigorously to no end.Now getting to the matter at hand. I think it's pretty obvious that "buckeye" in this context means resident of Ohio or resident of the "buckeye state". Therefore, while I don't LOVE being referred to as a "buckeye" I am not offended like when someone just ASSUMES I'm an OSU fan when they find out I live in Ohio. So to me it's not a big deal and we shouldn't get upset about it. Here is an appropriate parallel, and it just happens to come from the title of one of my favorite sports movies of all-time. Of course I'm talking about Hoosiers, which is clearly all about high school basketball in the hoops crazy state of Indiana, but has next to nothing to do with IU in Bloomington.BTW, while I enjoy Reese's Cups I actually DO refuse to eat those chocolate/peanut butter spheres on principle
