Assessing Coach Arth (and his staff)

The Jaguars of Southern University come into the JAR Sunday afternoon to give us all a respite from the misery of the Cleveland Browns. The Jags own a 4-5 record as well as one of the slowest and clunky websites in NCAA basketball. They don't have stats for this season posted on their clunky site and have only beaten awful teams that most people couldn't locate if challenged to do so. They just lost by 17 to Tulane. They were 7-24 last year and made it to the quarterfinals of the SWAC tournament (translation- they were a top 8 team in a ten team league). They were selected to finish sixth in the SWAC conference for the 2019-2020 season.

Yep, nice OOC on the road win. Keep 'em rolling.

They're still tied. ?

I so miss the mid-range jumper.

Yes, but every player must make eye contact and react like they are hanging on every word. -
Agreed, he's a good player and you can't have too many of those.
-
If he's as good as we'd hoped, maybe he steps into Roscoe's borderline rotation spot.
-
Shhhhhhhhhh, this is a no football zone!
-
So where does he fit?
-
From a different perspective, I think Reece and Currie become the primary interchangeable 4 and 5. From what little I have seen of Currie I think he's a little more of a post player than X. He can shoot the 3 but doesn't seem to rely on it as much as X. As such, I think they just need one backup serviceable big. I'm really looking forward to Dailey and hope he's using his year off to hone his offensive skills.

Glad to hear about how they handled the zone. In the limited times they saw it earlier this season, they looked a little lost. I was also happy to hear they mixed up the defenses a little.
-
I wish Daniel well, but I'd take X over Daniel every day of the week, especially when you consider the nature of this team's offense.

I enjoy it when the Zips play Marshall as I enjoy their pace and motion.

You'd sure hope it was a motivator for someone at UA. -
The Zips travel to Huntington on Wednesday the 4th to face the Thundering Herd. The Herd is just 2-3 (but play tonight) and are coached by Dan D'Antoni who loves to have his teams get up and down the floor and score. This year they are only averaging 71.6 ppg, so they must be down a little. They lost their two top scorers to graduation from a team that won the CBI tournament. 5-11 junior guard Jarrod West leads Herd scorers at 15.9 ppg, while 6-5 sophomore guard Taeveon Kinsey leads rebounding at 6.6 rpg. In the pre-season poll, they were picked to finish 11th in Conference USA.

It was said because it's a fact. The point is that it needs to be settled on a much higher level. That's not to be dismissive or squelch the discussion. I just hope that all those that want action to be taken are voicing their opinion at that higher level rather than just on here. Danny Hoke has given you the info to do it. Also, as I've said a number of times on here, one can be critical of both Bowden and Arth. As an aside, I also think that many of those now concerned with the budget would be much less concerned if the Zips had a reasonable season rather than the abomination we saw. THANK GOD THE BASKETBALL SEASON IS HERE. -
Let's hope the math department wasn't responsible for that one! Four fewer games for $15 more......but you do get that fancy duffle bag (the same one you would get for the $60).

Let's not act like UA suddenly gave up on winning football or forgot how to field a successful DI program. From the record since 1987, it is clear they never learned. Since then, no Akron head coach has been successful. Faust had two winning seasons out of nine. Owens had three out of nine. Brookhart had two out of six. Ianello had none in two years. Knute Bowden only had two in seven years. I don't know what the answer is. I suspect it won't be settled on an internet forum. That type of historical record certainly suggests it's more than just one bad head coach or misguided AD. -
Seems like just yesterday Ramart was considered a contender for the starting job.

I've been one that's preached patience through the transition. That period of patience officially ended with the final whistle tonight. From here it damn well better be onward and upward with no delay. -

Bob Dyer is as much of a journalist as Jerry Lewis was a serious actor.
