  1. Interesting article from Cleveland.com on the sports budgets of the non-OSU public universities in Ohio. The UA takeaways- UA is 8th out of 10 in the percentage of expenses covered by ticket sales; 2nd of 10 in the amount of per student subsidy towards athletics; and 3rd of 10 in total athletics expenses. Not positive figures in support of a new arena. http://www.cleveland.com/expo/erry-2018/04/75b2bda3ed/money_in_ohio_college_sports.html#incart_m-rpt-1
  2. I think the views of some of the Zips fans have been a little skewed by Akron's great luck in having Zeke and Big Dog. Quick, name 3 other top notch 6-10 or larger MAC big men in the last 10 years. Tough job without cheating. MAC teams get by with serviceable, not outstanding big men. They may get a 6-7 to 6-9 quality forward type occasionally (Hall; Campbell; Moss, etc.), but the classic big man who is impactful in the MAC is a most rare commodity.
  3. I'm concerned that none of them have matching shoes.
  4. The kid was good enough in the A-10 that I think he could help, but I see absolutely nothing tying him to the Zips.
  5. I'd love for the Zips to have come up with another quality big in the recruiting process, but their failure to do so isn't fatal.

  9. They were transfers, not redshirts. They practiced with the team, attended every home game and seemed very engaged. Can't imagine they'd pi$$ away a year.
  10. Both great kids who played hard and helped in a down year. However, if they were ever going to be major contributors, especially SIna, that's not a positive comment on the future direction of the Zips.
  11. $83 million in 2017 dollars.
  12. The reality is that the construction of a new arena will have require the participation of the voting tax paying citizens of Summit County and they have resoundingly said no. Russ Pry and the leadership of Summit County came up with a plan to raise funds, through a levy, to build an arena and fund the modernization of the county wide 911 system. Research and polling showed that while the citizenry might get behind the 911 system, the arena funding was going to go down big. As a result, they dumped the arena idea. The University doesn't have the kind of money with state cuts to pull it off and LBJ has given plenty to UA. Plus he'd have to pony up serious additional monies to even make a dent. Just so we're on the same page, the following are some recently built (or in construction) college arenas and their costs: UMBC Event Center Team: UMBC Retrievers Capacity: 6,000 (Up to for concerts) Cost: 85 Million Schar Center Team: Elon Phoenix Capacity: 5,100 Cost: 20 million Wisconsin Entertainment and Sports Center Team: Marquette Golden Eagles Capacity: 17,500 Cost: 524 Million Fifth Third Arena (Renovation) Team: University Of Cincinnati Bearcats Capacity: TBD Cost: 85 Million Welsh-Ryan Arena (Renovation) Team: Northwestern Wildcats Capacity: TBD Cost: 110 Million Wellness and Events Center Team: NJIT High Landers Capacity: 3,500 Cost: 102 Million CBU Events Center Team: Cal Baptist University Capacity: 5,200 Cost: 73 Million
  13. Speaking of Zips women, last I looked the softball team was something like 1-23.
  14. I wasn't aware one had to declare after all of their college eligibility was up.
  15. Ummm, wasn't this Antino's last year of eligibility? As such, I don't get the "entering the NBA draft" thing. I like Antino, but I think he's going right after LiAngelo Ball in the NBA draft. I hope the Sports Law Group has connections with GMs in Turkey.
  16. Because I can't handle my alcohol. I'd love to see a revamp of the JAR, ditching that awful track and the glass divider and improving some of the sight lines. That being said, I'm lucky to see a court for $60 a season!
  17. Good to hear. Like I said earlier, he was one those I'd least expect to leave given how he bought in early.
  18. 3 season ticket holders over a span of 4 days. Hopefully, it is just rumor.
  19. I never said they were founded or unfounded. I said it was brought up by a number of people with whom I had discussed the Zips. I was quite surprised by it and brought it up to see what others had heard. My hope is that it all has no basis.
  20. Exactly, with a ball and a hearty handshake. Jimond seemed to be one of those who bought in early and fully. I'd be very surprised.
  21. Anyone want to explain to me the rumor about Ivey not returning? I don't want to open a can of worms, but every fan I spoken to over the last week has brought it up.
  22. Well, the only entertaining game break activity just went into the old crapper- https://www.ohio.com/akron/news/breaking-news-news/university-of-akrons-president-matthew-wilson-stepping-down-to-rejoin-law-school-faculty
  23. No such luck CDMac. Can't get away to get down there.
  24. Kato better keep his nose to the grindstone. That kid looks like he could be a real player.
