Nice steal from Thorton and finish by Scott. We need our guards to step up. The Bg guards have been killing us all game. Shooting the lights out. I agree that will probably not last the entire game.
-
That is the 2nd time I have seen Dawson throw a shoulder into a guy who is blocking him out. NO reason to do that. There is tough play and stupid play. Dawson has made several stupid plays this season.
-
Great block by Freeman. He is amazing. Can any of our guards score a basket?
-
This team is built on defense and not offense. Freeman has missed a couple of easy shots and Ali has missed a 3. Only one basket in the first few minutes.
-
I hate to be pessimistic but without a true point guard I still think we will struggle at times as we did on the last play with St. Bony. Scott & Thornton have been ok at best. If Groce had any faith in them they would have been handling the ball on the last play. Tribble is not a true point guard and does not have a great outside shot. Tavari went from being a starting point guard to playing just a couple of minutes a game. His confidence must be shot and of all the guards is probably the worst defender because of his size. Ali is a small forward playing guard. Groce is putting his 5 best players on the floor because they play good defense but at times there is no flow because we do not have a true point guard that can handle the ball, distribute, and shoot. We know what X did for this team the last few years and that piece is sorely missing from this team.

Akron Zips Basketball All-Time Leaders
1981 grad replied to Zippy87's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
A long long time ago in a time when we had half time shows I still remember a women who did an amazing balancing act with plates and she also performed at the Cavs game. -
Ali has really matured. Instead of staring down the opposing bench when he scores he is smiling and having fun. Glad to see him being successful and having fun.
-
We lose this game without Ali. Although we have seen him in limited action, he is shooting and making a lot of short jump shots and not backing in like he did before he left Akron. Had a great game today.
-
I bought the barstool sweat last year and wore it to the game on Tuesday. It has held up well. Must admit the barstool telecast was bizarre but I wanted to support Freeman.
-
When it came down to crunch time, Groce went to the 2 biggest guys on the court, Ali and Freeman. Great execution and great hands and finish by Freeman. We still need to work on our failure to take care of the ball. We had 2 crucial turnovers at the end of the game. When it was time to inbound the ball, it is not a good sign when the announcer indicates there is confusion on the Akron bench regarding who is to inbound the ball and then a lazy pass and turnover. We lack an experienced point guard who can handle the ball and be trusted at the end of the game. I love Tribble but he is out of position as a point guard.
-
Give credit to Ali for the drive to the basket to draw the defender and a great pass to Freeman.
-
Another bad play by Dawson towards the end of the game. Just a stupid foul!!
-
Tavari went from starting guard to zero minutes. I wish we had a point guard other than Tribble that could finish at the basket. They dribble into the lane and never get it to the basket.
-
If we could make some wide open 3 pointers we would be up by 15. Zips are playing great offense. I wish we could hit some perimeter shots. Freeman is just a beast tonight.
-
The NCAA looks like a bunch of morons. They deny Ali the right to play but as soon as the Ohio AG files a lawsuit they grant him the right to play.

The crowd was really small for a good team like Bradley. However, they probably brought over a 100 fans and they were very vocal. We finally got some decent guard pay and made some outside shots. I love Nate's jumper. It has been a long time since we have had somebody who can create their own shot. We won the toughness battle and the rebounding battle. Freeman played great but had 7-8 turnovers on double teams and travelling. Still need to do a better job on getting rid of the ball on the double teams. If our guys could hit the outside shot it would help. Great win for the zips.
-
If you have shown nothing on a 2 win team, what does that say about your talent level at division one. The students that are transferring have a tough sell unless they move down from a division one school.
-
I am a blue chair folk and we still have them. Tickets are digital and parking is paper. Why? Because it's the University of Akron. The same folks who bring you 4 sips of hootch for $70 and crappy tickets behind the basket.
-
Yup, the only tickets left are the $70 tickets behind the basket and include 4 sips of Booze

When none of your point guards can penetrate or finish it puts pressure on the rest of the team. When they doubled Freeman it led to his 5 turnovers. He needs to be able to pass to somebody off of the double team to an open man. When it happened last night there were numerous quick passes but no guard to make a shot. Groce has to figure out some scheme to get the guards open shots on the double team. Watch the last possession when Tribble got stuck in the lane with no outlet.
-
Johnson and Thorton were a combined 0 points and 5 turnovers. Groce is a master at finding great guards. This team is just not meshing right now. He went with Thornton instead of Johnson as a starter and they both played bad. Neither one can penetrate and finish at the rim and they have not been scoring from the outside. We can live with them being facilitators but not turning the ball over.
-
I have not been impressed with any of our guards this game but I think Thornton has been the worse. I counted at least 4 turnovers on just bad passes.
-
What is Dawson doing heaving up a three when there was still time on the clock?
-
I think we have had 5 turnovers in the last 3 minutes. Not the way to come back down by 9.
-
The last 4 minutes they are playing better and have not turned the ball over. Lyle played some really good minutes. They have cut the lead to 9. Very little room for error if they are going to make this a game.
