This is one of those games that we all worried about when the Zips go cold from distance. In this game we only shot 28% from 3 but we shot 50% from the field. In other words, we won this game by finding another way to score which is what good teams do when their shots are not falling from distance. I think we have the 2 best point guards in the league but they had off nights going 2 of 11 from the field with 4 turnovers. Young had 2 in 12 minutes. These stats surprised me: We complained about the refs but both teams shot the same number of foul shots. We are usually on the losing end of that battle. I thought we got outrebounded but we were basically dead even on rebounds. I thought this game was over late but Central Michigan made 2 late three pointers and we had 2 turnovers in the last 90 seconds. We also had a dumb foul in the last 16 seconds in the back court which allowed them to score with the clock stopped. So basically 3 bad plays in the last 90 seconds. Looking forward to Freeman night and a home win on Tuesday.

That last basket is a reason I will never bet on sports. (LOL)
-
Lyles has been so good around the hoop and then cannot catch the ball. Tevari cannot make a 3 tonight. We need to come up big in the last 2 minutes.
-
The announcers keep saying they only have 7 players. Makes me wonder is that 7 scholarship players or just 7 players. They are starting to accumulate a lot of fouls. I never thought I would say this but Hardman had back to back outstanding defensive plays. Scott with the slam!!!!

We played a bad half of basketball and we are only down 3 points. Hopefully, Groce can explain that victories are earned and not given. There were several times that the zips were on the wrong end of the hustle plays. Need to do better.
-
mediocre officiating? We have been at the bad end of several calls but that is no excuse. The Zips need to step it up!!!
-
Marvin and Okonkwo on at the same time. Must be our big team!!
-
The Zips start out cold and the refs are not doing them any favors. That was an obvious charge and TJ looked like he got fouled taking the ball to the hoop and no call.
-
The home teams won 4 out of 5 this weekend with Buffalo being the only home team to lose. Winning on the road in the MAC is always difficult. Love that the Zips will be challenged to buck the trend and get a win tonight. Looking forward to the game.

Thanks!!! I do remember the court storming because it obviously made an impression on me. Is it harder to imagine Norther Illinois beating a ranked team or that there were more than 5 people in the stands or that there was real excitement in the stands at an N. Illinois game. (See video, all 3 are true) It just reminds me that MAC basketball has lost a lot of its fan base. We are undefeated in MAC play, and we struggle to fill half the Jar. Back in 2018-2019 having an undefeated MAC team or ranked team would draw butts in the seats. I will be curious to see the attendance at Central Michigan.

I remember Akron have a very long winning streak and my memory was that we lost at Buffalo. It was the 2012-2013 season and the streak went to 19 games and then we lost 2 of out last 2 of 3 to Buffalo and Kent in the regular season. We made the NCAA and only had to play 2 games because of the byes and then we got killed by VCU in Detroit when illness hit the team. I also remember another MAC team having a long winning streak, Kent or Buffalo? and that the streak ended I believe at Norther Illinois and the students stormed the court. It bugs me so if anyone can help I would like to know the team with the streak and where it stopped.

I do not know that but I was hoping that the people on this board had more sense than to hire Rob Ianello or Tom Arth. I did know a faculty member and was surprised to learn that was he was on a search committee for a coach. During the process he told me that Akron had found an amazing coach and used every superlative in the book about how this person was going to lead Akron to success. The coach was Caleb Porter. Not only was Caleb a great coach, but my kids played soccer and he was amazing with the kids and took time to speak to the parents at his summer soccer camp. Not surprising that the great coaches are people who relate well to others no matter the context of the relationship.

I remember that thread where people on this board indicated that he had a bad record at Tennessee Chattanooga and that people at that school were happy to be rid of him and that it was a bad hire especially since we had to pay them to get him. It is a shame that somebody from this board cannot be on the search committee next time we need to hire a football coach.

Increasing JAR Attendance/Engaging the Fans

The T was on the coach. After they got it down to 3 he huddled his team and literally exploded at the ref and was held back by his players. He slammed the clipboard on the ground and the ref heard it and then gave the coach a T. I have no idea what got the coach so mad but somebody indicated one of his players was bleeding and he was upset that there was no foul called.

Increasing JAR Attendance/Engaging the Fans

Does that make it right? I have gone to many functions, business and non business activities because it was the right thing to do and I did not leave early because it would have been disrespectful to the host. If the University is training these student athletes for life and a business career, should they not learn respect for others? If I was the U I would make it mandatory that the coaches escort the teams on the floor and that the coaches and teams stay till the end of the game and cheer on the Zips any time a student athlete is honored during a sporting event. -
Increasing JAR Attendance/Engaging the Fans

Last night they honored the student athletes who made the honor role at halftime with about 150 students being honored. After they were honored, about 95% left. I was disgusted by their choice to leave. It showed zero school spirit and I thought was disrespectful to the basketball team who has the nation's longest winning streak. They use the basketball crowd to honor the students and the students dishonor their fellow athletes by leaving ASAP. The school does this every year during a basketball game as long as I can remember. Am I the only one that feels that way? -
It is one thing to box out. However, you still have to go to the ball strong. We needed everyone to rebound tonight and on many WMU got numerous offensive rebounds because we were flat footed. I watched Hardman and he was just really slow to the ball and kept getting beat on the rebound. I thought WMU played really well offensively driving to the basket and they shot the ball well. Nate is the man in the clutch. When they got the lead down to 4 he made some clutch baskets. The team played really well offensively but WMU seemed to be playing downhill to the basket in the 2nd half. The refs called nothing in the first half and everything in the 2nd half. The Zips had 2 foul shots in the first half and probably 15 in the 2nd half. I thought WMU got tired in the 2nd half and started to miss foul shots. It may not be pretty but the streak continues.

Two hours of extra drinking for those members of this board who hit the campus bars before the games.

It is game day and I am expecting a half empty jar even though Akron has the longest winning streak in the country. I could sense Groce's frustration on the post game last Tuesday where he encouraged Zip fans to show up and support our team. Unfortunately, if you are listening to the post game you are already a Zip fan and Groce is preaching to the choir. For those that are going tonight, we may be few but lets be loud!!!!!! (and not just when Evan Wilson gets into the game)

I would not be shocked if we go undefeated in MAC play if we stay healthy and play good basketball in the remaining games. I think this is a unique season in that can anyone remember blowing out the 2nd place team by 30 points or blowing out Kent at Kent or an Akron team shooting 50% in MAC play and 37% from distance? Plus we are outrebounding our opponents and racking up assists. Also we play 10 guys and it seems as though each night anybody can step up and score. All the people on the team are quality guys who seem to have a winning attitude and we have a great coach. I do not see us losing to Western Michigan, Buffalo, or Northern Illinois at home. We just beat Kent at their place so we should do well against them at home. I think if we play as well as we did at Kent we could beat Toledo, Ball State and Central Michigan on the road. I know that if we go undefeated in MAC play that puts more pressure on the team in Cleveland but that is the nature of sports. We need to take one game at a time and continue to play at a high level and I think anything is possible.

Looking at the box score, what really surprised me is that Scott went 0 for 6 and had 4 turnovers. (He did have 4 assists) I have really been a Scott fan this season as I believe he as really stepped up his game especially shooting the ball and driving to the basket. Because of our dominance and balanced scoring, one guy can have an off night and it really does not get noticed. Because Young was injured in the 2nd half, he did play point guard for the first time this season and that may have hurt his game. Also, Nate had a career high 10 assists. I knew he did not score much that game but was surprised he has a career assist day. I like Groce's attitude in the post game conference, we are not worried about the winning streak, only our next opponent. It is a cliche but, take one game at a time.

If Akron wins out the MAC, I will start a thread, Should Akron get an at large bid?
-
You and I do have different takes. I meant discussing it with an chance that it would happen. I cannot remember a serious discussion about Akron getting an at large in a long long time.
-
This board used to discuss at large bids but I cannot remember the last time we discussed it. Might be 10 years ago.
