mes102
Can't wait to see what GoZips says about this...I've been high on this team since the practices before the Canada trip...wasn't sure how quick we would see the difference...looks like it could be here already!!!! Valpo Zip
Wow! what a win! This is the first time since very long time when the zips actually start the season on the right foot. No Austin Peay chokes or whatnot!Quincy was obviously HUGE in all aspects.Rico stole how many balls?Zeke was really a game changer. now only if we can find a solid rebounder to backup him up (Tree or Egner?)Are you sure Harney never played college bball before??Walsh is not a PG but he is a player. Whatever you want to call his position, we needed the offense he created.Serb is what we expected him to be, except the ugly 3 pointer attempt.Nitro...I'll give him a couple of games to warm up.All in all, I can't wait till Saturday... and the rest of the season for that matter. Oh! and does anyone remember what football is?
FromdaBurgh
WELP...I hate the fact that Zeke fouled out...but I'm soooo excited about the WIN!!! Way to come together Zips and play without the big guy! JOB WELL DONE!!!We would not have even been in this game if not for Zeke. Aside from the fact that his 10 points were the margin of victory, he had them totally confused. They could not get a shot in the air. He just kept slapping them down. One of the best nights of his career, and the next one will be even better.OK...I feel better!!!
akronzips71
We always had those high three point attempts, because we didn't have an inside game. NOW......HarneyAAQQQQQQQZEKEGilliamWE HAVE AN INSIDE GAME.Did you see how many wide open three point looks we had? That's because we have an inside game. When our three pointers start dropping... tpsjugglerdude
Best play call of the game was in the second half when State pulled within 4 and the crowd started getting noisy. The very next play Rico threw the alley-op to Zeke and took the crowd out of it for the remainder of the game. Previous Zips teams would (and did) started to fold at that critical moment. Hilltopper
All I can say is WOW! When the homer announcers said the Zips were the more athletic team, I had to rewind the DVR just to hear it again. Great way to start the season. I thought we'd get off to a slow start this year and I didn't pick us to win tonight. Boy was I wrong!!! The ESPNU announcers heaped high praise on the Zips tonight, calling them mature, composed, quick, long, athletic, aggressive, well-coached, confident, saying simply, "The best team won tonight." Wow.

And these are not MAC highly rated players, these guys compete for first team All American. To put it right back in their faces was awesome. Blue & Gold
One thing I liked was that the announcers were trying to figure out why Bost had such a sub-par game. They said Akron just sped him up too much. If we sped up Bost -one of the best PG's we'll see this year- to the point of taking him out of his game, our D may be awfully good this year. Sweatshirt goes to winner after lunch.Let's go Zips!!!!!!I guess we know who the loser is and who the guy with a free sweatshirt is going to be. Quickzips
Ok, time for some knee jerk analysis:First off, if the Zeke Marshall we saw tonight comes to play every night there isn't a team on our schedule that we can't beat. I'll take the foul out with under 3 to go as long as he is staying aggressive and poised and isn't getting passive and sloppy like he has in the past. He looked significantly better on offense as well. Not as much hesitation or fumbling with the ball. Zeke was decisive and confident all night, and it was a sight for sore eyes. Of course his biggest contriution is still on the defensive end where I don't think he gave the Bulldogs more than two or three decent looks in the paint all night.Right there with Zeke for player of the game is Quincy Diggs. Q had his full game working tonight. He was active in the passing lanes. He was finishing at the rim on the break. He hit some mid-range shots. He knocked down a 3. And he even stepped to the line to close out the game with 2 key free throws. Not far behind Q and Zeke was Alex Abreu. He had a little bit of trouble to start the game, but once he settled down he was a nightmare for the Bulldog guards. Dee Bost is going to wake up in a cold sweat tonight dreaming about Alex picking his pocket over and over and over. Nick Harney is going to be a big time player for this team. As long as he keeps his academics in order he will be a difference maker. Bold and entirely too early prediction. This kid is going to win multiple conference POTY awards. Serb had a relatively pedestrian game on paper, but he had some big moments when they counted. A few big offensive boards, and some nice buckets in the post late in the game that helped seal this one up. I think we can put that 3 point shooting back in the closet for a while though.Surprised we didn't see more of Gilliam tonight, but as Coach said in the postgame Q was on such a roll it was hard to pull him from the game. What I did see was pretty nice though. We will see a lot more from Chauncey as the year goes on.Brian Walsh may not be a PG, and he may not be a SG, but I've got no problem having him on the floor for 20+ minutes a night. Having a 6'5" guard who can hit from mid-range, knock down the 3 or finish around the rim. Been a while since the Zips could say that.Brett McClanahan.....well let's just say it's a good thing he is an established veteran on this team. There will be better days ahead for Nitro. We will need his 3 point shooting as the year progresses.Egner and Tree didn't get enough minutes to make a real impression on me. In general it was a great game for the Zips. Any time you can get two otherwise disinterested announcers to stand up and take notice with some of the compliments the ESNPU guys gave us you know you've done something right. We will have to clean up a little bit of our own sloppiness at times (a few too many turnovers still, a couple silly fouls here and there), but all in all it is a good night to be a Zip! ZippyforPresident
Great to start the season out with a nice road win. They looked good tonight. Hopefully this gives the team a lot of early season momentum that carries through to some of the bigger out of conference games. All I know is I can go to sleep happy. Goodnight Everybody! Dave in Green
Walsh may not be a "true" PG, but he's enough of a PG to keep the Zips going when Rico is resting. Actually, it was a little PG by committee when Rico wasn't in. Zips have a lot of good ball handlers, which makes it a little less critical when the starting PG rests. As GoZips mentioned a few days back, even the Serb can bring the ball up court, which he did when MSU was pressing near the end of the game. And they can all dribble, pass and catch. But the most important thing beyond the individual talent is that these guys play well together. That was some amazing team chemistry for the first real (non-exhibition) game of the season. It was a combination of individual talent and team play that kept the Zips playing tough, aggressive basketball when Rico and Zeke were on the bench.Zeke was a man tonight. He played tough, smart basketball against a bigger MSU front line, and almost made it the whole game without fouling out. He's edging closer and closer to greatness. This is a special Zips team. There's just a great mix of varied talent. They all seem to respect each other's play and enjoy playing together. There were none of those scenes of Zips chewing out other Zips that we've seen in previous seasons.Having said that, they're far from perfect. Some of their weaknesses will cost them wins during the season. On the other hand, Walsh, Gilliam, Harney and Tree are only going to get better. My earlier fearless prediction for this season was, win or lose, this is going to be one entertaining team to watch. Was that ever true tonight!
GP1
First off, if the Zeke Marshall we saw tonight comes to play every night there isn't a team on our schedule that we can't beat.Do you mean Zeke or Q?
Blue & Gold
And let's not forget Deji Ibitayo didn't even play tonight.(We should redshirt Deji; we already have too many athletes to get minutes, i.e. Gilliam)
Roo
Brett McClanahan.....well let's just say it's a good thing he is an established veteran on this team. There will be better days ahead for Nitro. We will need his 3 point shooting as the year progresses.I have never been impressed with his play, and last night he looked anything but a vet on the floor. He almost caused a huge collapse at the end while inbounding the ball. (I am pretty sure he was the inbounder on both late plays). The first one, he misses the PG streaking to the ball wide open and gives it to Diggs who fails to realize he is covered by two guys, travels, turns it over and the next play Zeke fouls out. Get the ball to the wide open PG, none of that happens. Two free throws later, he goes to throw the ball in and AGAIN he misses the wide open PG. He had countless no effort errors, looked scared, rushed his jumper. Played poor D. He looked just awful out there. He is a vet, this is not something you should see out of him. That is scary that he is starting with a performance like that. I really hope he is able to turn it around because he is by far the weakest link on this team. Let'sGoZips94
Who wants to open up a Zips Kool-Aid stand with me? Might be the best business on the market with how many people will want to drink it after that quality win. I tweeted at Joe Lunardi last night after the game and said that he might want to change his prediction about Can't State being the 14 seed out of the MAC come tourney time. Dambrot finally got that big, season-changing win. He needed to break through one of these games. This team was the most athletic team out there last night, proving that mostly on the defensive end as we stole pass after pass and pressured/blocked shots all game long. Our offense looked very impressive. Long shots weren't falling all of the time, but we didn't take many of those 3 pointers that we would have in past years against a BCS team. Zeke controlled the paint, Diggs and Abreu controlled the passing lanes, and everyone else doubled the crap out of MSU. As Dicky V would say, "THIS AKRON TEAM IS FOR REAL, BABY! I'M STIRRING UP MY PITCHER OF ZIPPY KOOL-AID, BABY! DIAPER DANDIES AND GOOD COACHING SHOULD TAKE THIS TEAM DEEP IN THE NCAA TOURNEY, BABY!"
