Talking Tressel

Can someone explain to me how this one rumor constitutes the public lashing of one of our most dedicated supporters?

Okay, maybe an overreaction. The twitter fiasco obviously had no bearing on JT or the job, but it was an immature use of the technology and wasted a lot of people's time. That's the kind of stuff you expect out of "one of our most dedicated supporters?" Sorry, not me. Not to mention, how stupid does it make ALL Zips fans look to the nation when we're falling hook, line and sinker for a false trail started by one of "our own?"

I don't know if we were even talking about the same person, as there was much twitter and rumor abuse today by many. I just happened to see one especially braggart post. Bottom line, there were folks here who knew the widespread impact Tressel coming here would make, and we didn't take this hiring lightly. The out-of-control twitter stuff made a mockery out of it. And a lot of people passed on false information and now have backtracking to do. To know it was done intentionally for no good reason is....wow. I do apologize if I offended anyone with my initial reaction. It's been a stressful day.

Here's hoping a lot of things today have been smokescreens for the "rumored" interview tomorrow. I'm doubting it now, as I'm left not knowing what to believe. It's like watching a Kardashian TV show.

:horse: Made a mistake, apologized, enough said.

Just had this pop up in my inbox from UA Zipmail

Editor's note: We wanted our UA community to be aware of an important message that our director of athletics sent to fans and supporters of Zips athletics.

As you know, we announced Saturday evening that Rob Ianello will not return as our head football coach. Coach Ianello and his staff worked hard for our football program, and I am appreciative of their efforts.

These decisions are never simple. The evaluation process that we conduct for all 19 of our varsity teams is ongoing and comprehensive. Coach Ianello and I communicated constantly during his tenure, and we had many conversations over the final weeks of the season regarding the future of our football program, including in the days leading up to our last game. I was aware that Coach's mother had passed away earlier that week and of his travel arrangements, but we talked after Friday's game and agreed that it would be best that I share with him my decision once it was final. I called him as soon as possible on Saturday to inform him that we would move in a new direction.

In the end, I determined that this decision is in the best interest of our student-athletes and our football program. While we have improved in academics, compliance and our community involvement – and we will continue to emphasize those areas – we also believe and aspire to be more competitive on the field. I know all Zips fans are eager to see our team succeed as well.

As we look ahead to the next chapter of Zips Football, it will be important that everyone associated with The University of Akron welcome the new coach and his staff to our University and the Akron community. I know our fans are looking forward to learning who will lead our program, and I ask for your support – especially by purchasing season tickets and attending games – so that we can build a championship program together.

We already have begun our search process, which will move as quickly as possible while we do our due diligence to ensure we identify the best candidate. Even though the 2011 season is over, we are mindful that, because of recruiting, this is still an important time in our college football calendar.

I welcome your feedback as part of the process. As always, you can contact me with any suggestions you have, whether it is specific candidates or just characteristics that you feel are important for our next coach to possess. While I may not respond to every submission, please know that I will read all of them. I also will not comment publicly on the search until we announce our new head coach.

As I told our nearly 100 football student-athletes, the future is bright for Zips Football and I am excited for them and for this new opportunity. There is a great amount of interest in this position, and we will identify a terrific leader to guide our program.

Thank you for your support of Zips Athletics. I look forward to introducing you to the next leader of Akron Football.

Go Zips!

Tom Wistrcill

Director of Athletics

This could be simplified a bit:

"Rob Ianello was the worst coach ever, did nothing right and got fired.

he was a no-name guy who had no experience and it completely backfired.

We won 2 games, and became the biggest joke in FBS.

I'm going to hire another no-name guy that will drive us even further into the ground.

email me, and I will ignore them.

Get ready for more awful 1-win or 0-win seasons.

We will become the Blue Jackets of the NCAA.

Thank you for your lack of support of Zips Athletics. I look forward to introducing you to the next joke of a football coach.

Go Zips!"

you have to admit though, the Tressel on campus rumor did draw a lot of attention. Enough attention to make an offer denial public? One way or another, you would think Akron or Tressel would come out and set the record straight. The attention this has drawn should be enough to get that.

I agree. If anything, this just opened up a lot of naysayers eyes and brought some people out of the woodwork. Let's not forget that this thing is real, Tressel and Akron are talking...no doubt about it. So maybe this will be a good example of support that this would have. There have literally been thousands upon thousands of twitter posts mentioning "Akron" and "Tressel". This is a good thing.

That being said...give Ian a break. The dude cares as much about akron as anyone on this board...period. He made a mistake, get over it. It may have helped us in the long run anyways.

GO ZIPS

If you can get in front of a tv Fox news 8 is carry a story soon!

yeah: "buzz around Akron today about Jim Tressel (video of campus | video of Tressel from not on campus) and we have absolutely nothing significant to report except that there has been no official announcement.... blah blah blah"

I've never met Ian, but I've seen him at pretty much every UA sporting event I've attended for the past 6(?) years. He's a moster fan. He owed the mistake. If Ian cares, I forgive him. One f-up doesn't define the guy.

I will ask everyone to be mindful - We clown, commiserate, learn, meet new friends, get pissed off...there's a lot of things that embody ZipsNation beyond being a fan message board. But one thing I insist upon is - No fake news here. "Facebook-fib" all you want, but don't do it here.

There have been in excess of 160 fans on this site within a 15 minute span scores of times in the past several days. In excess of 300 different viewers within 60 minute spans. This site is "The Face of the Zips Fan."

I, and the other mods, and most members take the reputation this board has earned very seriously.

No intentional lies or phoney news here. Period. It undermines our integrity.

Thanks.

CK

Internet rumors have been wild the last couple of days about Akron hiring Jim Tressel.

I know, it sounds good if you're Akron. Instant credibility in a football program that has almost none. He would recruit well, and probably steal a few of the big ones away from the big fish.

It isn't going to happen. There have been some people saying Tressel was spotted at InfoCision Stadium today. Laughable. Tressel was in his suburban Columbus home until after lunch today(no mention of a source). And would Akron officials really have a meeting with a high-profile candidate at its stadium? (They've done this in the past and had the parking lot closed today)

A source close to Tressel and who spoke with the former Buckeye head coach said Tressel probably will not coach again and is not going to take the Akron job. (Urban Meyer said there was no offer to coach OSU, of course they're not going to confirm it). Two, when NCAA Committee on Infractions comes out with its report in December, Tressel will probably have a "show cause" charge for a couple of years. That means any school that wants to hire him must appeal to the Committee on Infractions and justify the hiring.

Then there was this little diddy floated over the weekend about the next Penn State coach. Former Nittany Lion Jim Caldwell would leave the Colts to take over the Penn State program and Indianapolis would hire Tressel was its head coach. That seems to be as long a stretch as Akron. It requires two moves to happen.

I'm told Tressel will not coach in the NFL. It is a cut-throat business. However, Tressel would consider some type of front-office job.

Don't expect Tressel to land in Akron. Look for former Zip Paul Winters to get the first crack at that job, and keep an eye on Matt Campbell, University of Toledo assistant, as well.

Why not, so far the offer doesn't seem to be a rumor at all. I honestly have not been this excited about Akron football. The possibility. How is there a 0% chance if Akron presented Tressel with an offer to think about?

If we don't find out anything tomorrow, I'll move on and hope we don't get another assistant like the guy from Toledo. Paul Winters would be a good 2nd choice here.

Seems as if we've all ignored an important post earlier in this thread:

Why today didn't matter...

Sources said Wednesday for the meeting with Tressel the whole time, not Tuesday.

Next Trustee Meeting.

November 30, 2011, 10 a.m.*, Student Union, Room 339 (Executive session, 8 a.m.)

Now I'm no expert on all the things UA's Board of Trustees does, but there's a simple description on UA's website:

The University of Akron's Board of Trustees is the governing body for The University of Akron, pursuant to Ohio Revised Code 3359.01. The Board is composed of 11 members—9 voting members and 2 nonvoting student members—who are appointed by the Governor of Ohio with the advice and consent of the State Senate. Trustees are appointed to a nine-year term of office, with the exception of student Trustees who are appointed to a two-year term.

The Board of Trustees has been charged by the Ohio Legislature (Ohio Revised Code 3359.03 and 3359.04) with: selecting and appointing the president; setting the operating budget; approving personnel appointments; granting all degrees awarded by the University, including honorary degrees; establishing tuition and fee rates; approving contracts; and approving all rules, regulations, curriculum changes, new programs and degrees at The University of Akron.

The bolded parts would seem to relate to things involved with a major hiring. So it's not unreasonable to think that the UA Board of Trustees would be presented in this meeting with a report on any previous UA meetings with someone like Jim Tressel, and whether anything further was required moving forward.

After reporting out to the Board of Trustees and fully informing them of all details, it's not unreasonable to expect that any significant news might also be shared with the public.

So I think it's fair for all the zero percenters and all the hundred percenters to reign in their ponies and wait just a few more hours to see what official word comes out after the Board of Trustees executive session, which, by the way is private and not streamed on the web as regular public sessions are.

Does anyone know what's going on at Infocision tonight? All the parking lots adjacent to the stadium are full and there's a cop across from Speedway at Brown-Exchange intersection keeping people from going through there like there's a game tonight at Infocision tonight...very weird...

For what it's worth, Ian and I have talked and I can tell you all that he owns up to his mistake and truly feels sorry for creating the madness this afternoon. I don't know him personally, but by all accounts he's a huge Zips fan and supporter and just didn't think this through. I think we all had one (or one hundred lol) of these moments as college students...let's give him a break and move forward ZN.
