Jim Tressel on staff??

Here is my old post from 29 November 2011 about a Jim Tressel hiring at UA and I believe this is still relevant (at least for myself).

If Jim Tressel is hired in at Akron what will be YOUR first reaction??

Mine would be.... 3 double shots of Jim Beam, then RUN (2-4 miles) to the nearest ACME, buy a 6 pack of Christmas Ale, run back home (with Christmas Ale in hand) and fill up "Das Boot" to the brim, drink that while I hug/cry with my 3 Zippy stuffed animals!

Since Christmas Ale is no more PBR would do just fine ;)

Also, I broke my Das Boot about a month ago so I would just shotgun the PBR.

Go Zips!!

Zach, you hit the nail on the head! He's being hired to whore for $$$, which is all he's either eligible, or capable, of doing at this time. Personally, I'll send my money to the school in Portage Cty. before I'll send a dollar to a school that hires this disgraced ex-Suckeye.

Don't let the door hit you in the #@$ on the way out. ;)

WKRK reported tonight that Tress helped Akron with it's head coach search. So I gotta think yeah, Coach Bowden is on board with this.

If by "search" WKRK means falling flat on their faces trying to hire one guy and then having another guy come knocking, I guess it was a "search".

But he needs them for employment?

I'm with you Dr Z. All things Tressel usually smell funny to me.

As long as this thread is now, I have yet to see anyone make a compelling argument as to why hiring Tressel in this capacity is a good idea.

Generally speaking my guess would be he would be coming here in some sort of alumni/development capacity and in that regard you kill what you eat. If he can bring in more money to the University than he is being paid out then it is a good bet.

If he is being brought to this University to serve in some capacity with an ultimate goal of getting us out of the MAC once again his ability to succeed will depend on how much longer we are in the MAC. Administrative jobs (although nothing to sneeze at) are significantly less compensation wise than head coaching jobs.

It all comes down to his impact versus his salary and whether it is a good trade. If this man get can get us out of this awful conference and help get a basketball arena built then hire him now. No AD has seemed to be able to make that magic happen.

I know where you're comming from Dr.Z. I grew up in Akron w/ Denison, and survived the oust Faust era. Not sure I like the Tressel marriage. That said, in my travels back to Akron, when I talk to OSu fans this man is still somehow GOD. If I hear oe more "the ncaa is unfair and biased towards OSU i'm going to yawn in technicolor. On a national stage, it looks suspect. Within the state, incredible.

------

Spaeking of profiles, are we truly in Akron's golden age? Internationally recognized soccer program that wins championships w/ the best fans hands down. A basketball team that regularly competes in the NCAA's, and a newly formed who's-who football staff that speaks of things to come and is already making waves in the national press.. B) The iCoach era somehow seems so far and away doesn't it? :D

Lemme just be the first to throw this one out (even if it's a pipe dream): Complete the stadium, wrap the north endzone!!!! :D

Here's my theory:

The university expects Bowden to come in and fully turn our program around. Everyone is on board with this and can't wait to see it happen. The question then comes in, is this where Bowden wants to live out his coaching career though? I seriously hope he would consider this, and again, so does everyone else. But if he does leave after successfully turning us around (like many other MAC coaches have done), we will need a coach that can come in and maintain our progress and keep us on the way up.

Who could this be in 5 years?

Maybe a certain individual who is already on the University's staff who recently (at that time) has had his "show-cause" penalty expired. Someone who had been in the background helping promote the football program, helping with recruiting when needed, etc. Someone how is already familiar with the program who can come in immediately and make another big impact.

Is this anywhere near the truth? Probably not...just an idea I had!

Let's say this does happen, just for the sake of me asking this question: has there ever been a time where an individual went from being a university's vice president to becoming their head football coach? Maybe this is common practice and I'm not aware, but sounds crazy to me.

the thought crossed my mind as well.... in a way, it certainly provides a huge insurance policy.

I love what Terry Bowden has done. While Tressel would have been a little bigger splash initially, I'm not sure he would have been able to generate the kind of enthusiasm that Terry has. I'm thrilled we have Terry Bowden on board, the promotion and visisbility he has brought has been just what this program needed. Considering the football program as a whole, I think Bowden would have been a better hire even if both would have been interested in the job. I'm fine with Tressel being at UA if he can help in some capacity but I'm also happy to hear that it sounds like the football program will be left entirely in Coach Bowden's capable hands. No need to even consider Tressel for anything football related at this point unless Coach Bowden wanted him to do something.

The key to this is that the Tressel hire has little to do with athletics. It has everything to do with the Vision 2020 plan. Who better to have engaging Ohio then probably the most recognizable face the state has to offer?

Other then the haters on here, most people see Tressel as a legend. He is an alumnus, an iconic figure for the state, and has multiple connections with people of influence. I am glad this is happening, and it will be interesting to see the direction the University takes. Proenza has always wanted bigger and better for this University and this community.

Exactly, gmann! Who is the Ohio Governor, again?

Precisely.

Nope, that's exactly what I'd expect from someone named Spin. Well done.

Everyone I like gets their chops busted eventually, some daily. :chair:

I have always had a ton of respect for the man, and having him part of my school is unreal. I truly believe he was the skapegoat in the whole tOSU and that several other individuals should have been escorted off the campus, starting at the top.

I see the changes being made to the U, and the direction they want to go, and that has just gotten a lot easier with The Vest on board.
