I attended the evening practice tonight. Hard to tell a whole lot from this practice but a few things stood out.

Pohl & Hirschman both looked good throwing the ball. Hirschman was a little inconsistent, though.

I witnessed MTB1 make a pretty nice grab on the far sideline as he was being interfered with. The other freshman WR, Wolf was not on the field.

The BYU transfer, Phillips was there and practiced but was not in pads so no contact.

I don't know when or if CJ Mizell is coming but I will tell you we have 2 good LBs in camp right now. Jatavis Brown & Justin March are looking good and will lay a lick on you.

DeonTae Moore & Jerome Lane both looked very agile in drills. Hopefully, they will get their grades where they need to be.

Looks like we have some depth at DL. Presley, Caponi, Grice, Horner, Capi, Hollis, McCrea & James mixed it up in the 2 deep.

Isaiah Williams is still on the offensive side of the ball and actually looked pretty darn good at left tackle with the 1s.

The new punter can boom 'em, but looks inconsistent.

Glad I went, but now I have full blown football fever.

I wonder if other MAC coaches are done after 32 seconds of video?

I used to get several minutes of Ianello's BS thoughts...now I actually want to hear what my coach has to say, and I get 32 seconds.

I agree this is leaving me wanting for details (thanks K92!).

I wonder if the reason these videos are just snippets at this point is because TB has a LOT of quick talent evaluation going on (with all the transfers) and he doesn't want to mention names much until he's got a better feel of who will be playing a lot (and who will not) come fall. He may want to keep the competitors in the dark for a while. I bet once he and the staff start to draw some conclusions, we'll hear more about individuals.

Chisholm ready to go to another level By George Thomas

“I just didn’t want to be the average guy. To be great, you have to be more than average,” Chisholm said. “You can’t do the same things everybody on the team is doing.” The results show on Chisholm’s physique. Zips coach Terry Bowden sees it.

“He’s about 195 [pounds]. He started the season at 205 last year, so he’s a little lighter, but he’s older,” Bowden said. “He’s lifted weights. He’s trained. You can get faster. I think he’s picked it up. He’s picked up the speed.”

PS Thanks for the notes K'92

Went to the end of practice today and was almost not able to get in. I was stopped at the South gate and told it was a closed practice by what looked like a grad student that worked there. So, I went to the North gate and walked right in. Tempo Tempo Tempo - emphasis on reps (not in full gear). Linemen were back ready for the snap very quickly. Units were moved in and out (looked like ones and twos were mixed) just as quick. Players were exhausted and it showed. QB's hung out receivers and there were missed blocking assignments. Did not see Rachal or McCray in the late action, but they were dressed and looked used up. Rossi was hustling and making plays. The defensive backfield looked good. Ball handling drills at the end were not sharp enough. In the end, lots of work, but sloppy execution, which is what you would expect at this time.

We must have been close to each other. I sat with the basketball coaches at the north end. It was as you wrote quite a

quick tempo. KD left early, but Glen Box and Dan Peters stayed a while as did I. Those QBs have cannons for arms.

Tip: I was told that they can run two-a-days only so often. There is no evening practice on Friday.

GT's Scrimmage Report

Funny he doesn't mention Tom Wistrcill's fine catch on the sideline. :)

Seriously though...I left feeling pretty good about the defense and worrying a little about the offense.

Best part of the scrimmage was a couple more slobberknocker hits from Jatavis Brown. Kid's got a nose for the ball. I cannot wait to see him punish someone in a game situation.

I got to see the scrimmage on Saturday. I saw some positives and some negatives. Some of this stuff we’ve already heard. I was impressed with the defensive line. What an improvement from a year ago. The staff has done a great job of adding much needed depth. It will be fun to watch that group develop into a unit. There’s a lot of competition up front.

Offensively Hirschman did most of the work. He didn’t look bad. A few of the receivers had nice long grabs but for the most part there was nothing earth shattering there. I don’t believe MTB was targeted at all and I must say, so far, I’m not impressed (more on this later. The running game was pretty much held in check.

This one goes to the defense in my mind

This. Now I might see a little bit of what jupiterroo was getting at.

Just a little FYI: I didn't even mention where Cody played high school football in my original story. Here's the dilemma: while some mistakes do get in the paper, there are at least two editors looking at copy. When writing on deadline, that's a necessity. No one is perfect and I certainly strive for perfection, but if certain members of this community feel as if they can do a better job, you're welcome to apply for it.

As for making mistakes here? Seriously? When I bother to reply, I'm typing off the top of my head. For those who can't handle that, there's a simple solution.

I appreciate your work on all Zips related information. I'm sure there are MANY fans that don't post that feel the same. The few that can't look passed minor mistakes, unfortunately are the ones that post. Keep up the good work! :thumb:

Every George Thomas blog post has at least one typo/grammatical error. He seems to feel mistakes are OK as long as he is typing fast. John S. Knight would not agree.

He clearly doesn't like being called out on his accuracy issues. Not a good business to be in if you have such thin skin. Anyone who calls him out via Twitter immediate gets blocked. He's pissy.

George, how about proofing your own copy once or twice before submitting it?

If you want to complain about the guy's work, do it off the board. PM him. I'm sure he'll respond.

If you do it here, it just looks like you're grandstanding. Which you are.

Let me explain. I'm not grandstanding. I used to have a great deal of respect for print journalism, and in the ABJ we had one of the best, if not the very best, mid-size daily paper in the country. (Full disclosure: My father was an editor there for 40 years.) The people at the ABJ took tremendous pride in their work, and it showed. I have had 3-4 interactions with Mr. Thomas wherein I have pointed out interesting stories that haven't been reported, and his reply has always been, essentially, "Hey, I do what I do and go home. I don't do any more than they ask of me or pay me for." I also have heard him openly criticize MAC sports and UA and imply that he feels this beat is beneath him as a "professional journalist." Well, the effort he puts into this beat is pretty obvious to me - perhaps because I'm a sports journalism junkie - but many of you are willing to settle for anything he dishes up simply because UA hasn't garnered much attention in the past. The fact the he's not even proofing his own copy before posting blogs or articles on Ohio.com tells me he really doesn't care about the quality of his work. So it's not intended as grandstanding - I'm simply decrying the continued lowering of standards caused by lazy writers.
