PerPD: Harney suspended

Not much. KD is a no nonsense guy when it comes to following the rules. What Harney got suspended for, might not get him suspended from quite a few other MAC programs.

Thanks for reminding me not to assume that everyone understands that. The standing joke around here used to be that Can't players who committed major mayhem might be required to sit out the first 5 minutes of 1 game while a Zips player suspected of a minor infraction would have to sit out several games. Newer Zips fans wouldn't be aware of that. Then there's the familiarity factor with Coach Dambrot. Those who've had many hours of conversations with him over the years are likely to have a better feel for just how strict he is than those who only know him from reading news stories.

On a related matter, Toledo's leading scorer, Justin Drummond, was booked for DUI last Saturday. When you consider the number of innocent people killed or maimed every year by impaired drivers, that's a pretty serious offense. His basketball punishment?

Read this is the 3rd time Harney has been suspended during his career here. Now that I think of it, every season since my first year at Akron there has been some distraction with a player that has affected the team negatively. I'm seeing a pattern here folks. Take your blue and gold glasses off and stop being an apologist. We love to talk smack about the reputation of that program a few miles east of us, well I say we are no better.

Do you realize how strict our program's expectations are compared to other MAC schools and, even more so, to all other schools in the NCAA?

Do you even know what Harney's situation is?

With all due respect, I'd guess the answer to both questions is "no"

Well...it is times like these that the character of individuals shows. We have the talent to win, we really do...it's weather or not they decide to step up to the plate or not.

So I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that Kwan and Big Dog are for sure getting more play time...

One of Nick's 3 suspensions was the dreaded NCAA paperwork suspension that also took Tree out for the first 2 games last season. I wouldn't count this the same as the others. But anyone who can't stomach any suspensions for any reason probably shouldn't be following college sports. I understand that college chess teams have almost no team suspensions, so that might be better to follow for those with zero tolerance.

I believe the rifle team is also suspension-free.

And concerning following a sport other than basketball, let me say that compared to basketball rifle presents more opportunities to heckle members of the other team. In basketball heckling is generally limited to guys shooting free throws or those who recently launched an air ball. In rifle you can shout out something nasty about the shooters mom every time he/she lines up a shot. Although I have learned from experience that it is usually a good idea to limit heckling to the air rifle portion of the competition and avoid doing so during the small bore contest.

My immediate thought is....what the heck has happened to Deji? He displayed some great improvement early, moved into the starting lineup, but has now disappeared completely from the lineup?

If Deji moves his feet on defense tonight when he gets into the game, he will get some significant PT. If not, he will be back to riding the bench.

I don't care about other programs. I care about my program. You know the guy who was kicked off of the team for trafficking marijuana last season? You know..the same guy who some on this board say is on track to be back on the team next season? I saw him out last night and let's just say it doesn't look like he has learned much. *This statement is not meant to imply Abreu is still trafficking marijuana, just that I don't think he is handling himself the way he should if he really wanted to change the public's perception of him and get back on the team*

I have a highly educated guess what Harney's suspension for, a new member even hinted at it. He needs to grow up and get his priorities in order.

Aren't we talking about Nick Harney? If you truly care about the program, I'd hope you look at these guys more as human beings than just basketball players. That's your call though.

I guess it's easy for someone to dismiss Nick Harney as someone who needs to "grow up" if they know very little about Nick Harney, his background, and the personal issues he has.

The other guy was brought up because of the comment of how much "tougher" KD supposedly is compared to the rest of the country. Of course I care about the players as human beings, but at some point you have to draw the line somewhere.I feel KD's line is drawn when he is left with no other choice.

I also care about the reputation of the Men's basketball program as well as the University. How many chances does he need? I'm probably a little more connected than you may think. I am a recent graduate and Akron really isn't very big. If you don't commute, everybody pretty much knows everybody and everybody goes out to the same places.I do not understand the logic that Harney's personal issues give him a pass to mess up over and over again. There is a reason everybody is hush-hush about this, and it's because they don't want the public to know. Why? I'll let you think about that.

Why do we need to know what Harney was suspended for? We are all die hard Zip fans, but it is not our business to know what misdeeds he committed. That information is available to the people that need to know (coaches, administrators, etc.). What we as fans need to do is support the team and those that are playing and support Nick when he gets back in action.

The guy was our 2nd best player over the past 5-or-so games. He disappears from the line up and you chide a Zips fan for wondering "What happened?"? Are Zips followers supposed to be stupid sheep that blindly follow and support whatever happens at UA without so much as ever questioning "What happened?" when a star player is suspended?

Gheez...Wyatt Webb isn't coaching any longer.

I'm sorry, but I'm sort of getting tired of the "people make mistakes when their young" and "treat everyone like human being" lines. Though we all agree there is some growing you do when your young, and we all do make mistakes; but if you're still having the same mishaps AFTER having supposedly shown growth...it's not growth. I expect the freshman and sophomores to be suspended because of personal issues, not a well seasoned senior.

We shouldn't expect everyone to be saints, but we should expect people to learn from their mistakes; to build upon their character. And there is nothing wrong with that, and that's the best support we can give to people.

The reason no one is saying what caused the suspension is because it's nobody's business to tell. It's a private matter within the team. Just because a few Internet warriors think they have a right to know doesn't mean squat to the coaches and players. If the Internet warriors want to keep bloviating, have at it, but it's not going to change a thing.
