Tree Treadwell Thread

For those that know the NCAA rules I have a question. Since Tree was a senior and played a few games this season, has he used up his eligibility or can he come back and play Division one or two basketball. Based on the article, it seems like KD does not want him back but I am curious if he could still play somewhere.

I'd say his most probable next step is playing professionally overseas.

Really disappointing to hear, but I give Dambrot/whoever else was involved in making the decision credit. I figure Tree had to be really close to graduation... I feel for him as I feel he is genuinely good person, but he has messed up a few times now, and ultimately we must all face the consequences of our actions.

Tree, I know you do/have read Zipsnation. If you're reading this, thank you for all of your hard work on the court and I wish you the best in the future. As tough as it may be, take what you can from this incident and use it to make you a better person. Good luck.

I agree with one exception. As part of their athletic scholarship, student athletes may sign agreements requiring that they adhere to a higher standard of personal conduct than other students at the same school. If this is the case at UA, then scholarship athletes may face different treatment than non-athlete students by virtue of what they signed up for. Maybe an ex-UA scholarship athlete reading this would like to comment on what differences there might be.

Agreed. They do represent the university unlike other students and are receiving compensation from it.

Well written Marla. Good luck Tree.

“I want to win big, but I want some peace of mind,” Dambrot, 56, said Thursday after a victory over Western Illinois. “I’m older and I deserve that. Ultimately, I get judged on that. I don’t want that reputation. That’s not the way I run my business.”

“I’m almost refreshed. It’s almost like I’m completely cleansed,” Dambrot said. “I like our group. At the end of the year, we may not win as many games, maybe we will. But it’s almost like I feel I can do my thing now. Before, I felt a little handcuffed at times. [With] this group, I can be myself.”

The NCAA rule is 5 consecutive years to complete 4 seasons of interscholastic competition. Tree was a non-qualifier who spent his 1st year at UA proving his scholastic ability. Non-qualifiers who maintain qualifying grades as freshmen are granted 3 years of scholarship athlete eligibility, identified as their sophomore, junior and senior seasons. They must keep their grades up to remain eligible. If they are still making academic progress toward graduation after their 3rd athletic scholarship (or senior) season, they can petition the NCAA for a 4th season of competition which would be their 5th and final year of eligibility. If they are granted a 5th season, they are identified as 5th year seniors as Tree was this season.

In other words, this is the final season of Tree's NCAA eligibility. Unless he has graduated, he can't transfer to another D-I school. It may be technically possible for him to transfer to a lower division school. But it could only be for this season as his NCAA eligibility runs out at the end of this season. Since we're already well into the college basketball season, a lower division school looking to add a player with less than a full season of eligibility remaining doesn't seem likely.

Best wishes to you Demetrius. I'm glad that Keith and Akron took a chance on you. You were a great contributer. It's sad that you didn't take full advantage of what you had, but I hope you learn from the experience, and I wish you every success.

Personally, I'm torn in these situations. This reflects on the university and all of us as alumni, fans, current students, etc. It really bothers me when people don't realize how precious what they have is. Everyone makes mistakes and, in most cases, should be given second chances. However, that can only go so far like in Tree's situation. (I'm referring to the multiple incidents as I don't know the details of any of them.) I understand, also, how Keith could feel "refreshed" with this behind him because he can now concentrate on the guys who are working hard at accomplishing their goals. I just hope that Keith and other coaches at UA never stop giving future players the opportunity. I know it's difficult, but if no one gives them an opportunity to make good, then how are they ever supposed to make anything of themselves. I don't know what UA does for orientation for freshman athletic scholars, but perhaps some words from athletic alumni demonstrating how the opportunity bettered their lives and how grateful they are for it would be worthwhile, if not already being done. Some real world reminder of how precious the opportunity is that they've been given and how they should cherish it.

I guess I'll shut up, per your request, because I'm not here to engage in a source war. The end result of all of this will clear that up.

Looks like you won't have to shut up, after all.

Good luck to Tree. He certainly got his share of breaks while he was here. I hope one day he realizes that.

And, I hope, for his sake, that he gets a degree and moves forward in life.

I have a few thought here regarding Tree....

1) What does "not enrolled" mean? We're between semesters. Spring semester won't begin for several weeks, so any student still has a lot of time to schedule classes.

2) Was there some sort of course for him to be reinstated, and he decided not to pursue it? Or, was it our decision?

3) Was he indeed booted under the student discipline code? In Quincy's situation, that was public knowledge. Why would this situation be any different?

Many of these questions never get answered. This goes all the way back to the McKnight suspension.

Some people really shouldn't comment on things when they know absolutely nothing about what happened and can only speak out of emotion and hate. Especially when they ignore facts that completely counter their point.

This is especially true when comparing apples and oranges and discussing what is happening at UA compared to what is happening at another school in situations that aren't even remotely similar.

The worst part of all of this was the false claim that Tree could somehow make it back if he did all of the right things. For anyone who believes that, it makes it seem like Tree screwed up several times as opposed to the one awful night and that's just not the case.

Tree was never coming back. It sucks and it wasn't something anyone wanted to hear, but it was the difficult truth. It's time to move on from Tree as a Zip, and it has been for awhile. We have an exciting young team that has several players stepping into bigger roles. It's time to focus our attention on them.

As for Tree, I think he's learned that one really bad night can change your life forever. Hopefully he remembers that when he gets his next opportunity. And he will - he's a good kid who made a really dumb decision that he has to live with, but it isn't the end for him. With his talent, he'll get a shot overseas. Making really good money playing professionally isn't too shabby for a kid who was close to being a high school dropout before turning his life around.

I'll still remember him as one of my favorite Zips. He had a great three years here and has many more ahead of him. Best of luck to him moving forward.

What a shame. The way this team is playing, this would have been an awesome season with Tree in there.

I only wish for the best for Tree, he was one of our legendary players, and they can never take that away from him.

I liked Tree and he was a fan favorite for sure, but "Legendary"? I don't think he is in the top 10 in any statistical category is he?
