Staton14
Sooooooooooooo glad I went to the game tonight. Anyone want to talk dying attendance again? Seems like a bad time to talk attendance after the second largest crowd of the season.
skip-zip
We just do not have a go to guy at the end of the game. Antino was 2 of 10, Reggie and Kretzer were a combined 1 of 8 for a total of two points. These guys are juniors and suppose to be leaders of this team. This is the most noticeable thing to me. What are we doing down the stretch in some of these games when we need experienced guys to lead the way? Reggie and Jake have seemed to become role players, when I thought they'd be very vital pieces in Tree's absence, especially down the stretch. That looks like it's left Keith to try to rely on freshmen to close games, and that's turned out to be a disaster. Other Observations:1) Miami successfully pressing us into mistakes? I'm sure other MAC teams will zero in on that now. 2) I'm sure the "twin towers" lineup was intended to exploit our advantage in the paint. That came up big in the rebounding dept., but the points weren't there. 3) I said recently that we need everyone healthy to make a run. I hope Noah is 100% soon.4) Keith skipped a post-game radio interview after a home game? I'm sure he was beyond upset. 5) Attendance of 4,700? You would have never known it. Although the bleacher sections were fuller than normal, those folks were pretty quiet. Looked like there were a lot of youth groups who probably had no real interest in Akron Basketball. And the number of empty blue seats (already counted in the attendance) also really impacted what could have been a difference-making crowd. I guess this is proof that a larger crowd doesn't always equal a better crowd.
skip-zip
Boy... an 'L' tonight really puts the pressure on the team if they want to avoid playing a MAC tournament game at the JAR...It's worse than that. The current format makes you have to play 5 games to win the title if you are not in the Top 4 spots. So, that's both one extra game at home, and an additional Wednesday game in Cleveland. If we can't pull out a huge win in Buffalo on Tuesday, we'd have 5 teams in front of us, with 3 games to play, and 2 of those are on the road. We need a big turnaround.....soon.Last year, we were able to secure the #4 spot with a 12-6 record, and we've 8-6 right now. It may not require 12 wins to get that spot this year, but I'd think we need to win at least 3 out of the last 4 to get it.

Dr Z
While I'm out of town, and missed this game I did read in the Miami (Florida) paper the Zips were an eleven point favorite. Odd I can read that in a newspaper in Miami, but not in the Akron paper. Knowing nothing but a box score, Zipsnation always gives a pretty good feeling on how the team performed. Reads disappointing. Balsy
It is obvious that this years team was built around Tree and we don't have anyone to replace him. What I am really concerned about is next year. We lose two of our best producers this year, where is that going to leave us?Basically where we are this year? We lost one of our biggest producers last year as well...Diggs...So I'm not really concerned about next year. This team has got some fantastic players who need to work on the inside game. One thing I've been impressed with all season, is that this team is more athletic than I can remember seeing. But they've got to play smarter. And why on earth can we still not play against the press? This is now the third consecutive season where if a team turns on the press, we INSTANTLY wilt. Can someone who understands basketball better than I do give an analysis on this? LZIp
All that depth paid off in OT. Too bad a go to scorer can't be developed out of it.
Captain Kangaroo
Mitch Hedberg once observed:"Wearing a turtleneck is like being strangled by a really weak guy, all day. Wearing a backpack and a turtleneck is like a weak midget trying to bring you down."Last night I saw a really weak midget bring the Zips down. Miami was the weakest team to beat the Zips at home since Bryan Hipsher missed those 2 FT's against EMU about 12 years ago. Shot selection was horrific. Poise down the stretch was horrific. 20 turnovers? Against a really soft press. We had 8.5 seconds left to get a shot off, and couldn't even make an inbound pass? What's with Robotham scrapping with the trainer? We take the ball inside and we score all day. Instead, we hoist 3 after 3 after 3.What was Ibitayo thinking when he turned down the drive to the hoop and kicked it out to Kwan for the 3 at the end of regulation? We needed 1 point to win, and he's kicking it out to a 30% 3-point shooter? Miami wanted the win more than the Zips. They were more poised. And they made their free throws. So despite having comparatively worse talent and depth, and playing on the road, they won.Maybe the Zips learn more from this loss than they would have if Kwan's 3 would have fallen? That's the only possible silver lining in this one.
skip-zip
Miami was the weakest team to beat the Zips at home since Bryan Hipsher missed those 2 FT's against EMU about 12 years ago.Actually, last night brought back instant memories of this one....The home loss in 2008 to Northern Illinois, a 10-point loss to a 5-17 team that had just lost their previous 5 games. Worse yet, it was the game that snapped a 22-game home winning streak. Time for us to snap a losing streak in Buffalo on Tuesday.

Balsy
Can anyone enlighten us on:1) Noah's spat with the trainer; and2) Evans second half disappearance? And we got that bit of information about 12 hrs. ago? Nothing from any news outlet since?

clarkwgriswold
I chased down some info on the Evans and Robotham situations.Robotham's bickering with the trainer had to do with the trainer telling him he shouldn't go back into the game after he was hurt. Noah may have taken it a little too far, but that's a result of his competitiveness. Looks like the trainer was correct at this point.Evans spent the entire second half watching from the hall in street clothes. Apparently, something happened in the locker room at halftime. As the team went into the locker room after the Toledo game, his mother was screaming at KD from the stands about how her son was used. Maybe the situation boiled over.
The Hip Zip
This is why I have introduced legislation that all mothers should be banned from attending their children's sporting events. They just muck it all up for everybody. Good stuff Clark, you have been a fine addition to this board. Before I set somebody off, yes, that was tongue in cheek.......... Captain Kangaroo
Thanks for the insight. Makes sense.Too bad Evans took himself out of the game Saturday night. He would have been in line to get Noah's minutes. Wonder if it is a 1-game thing, or if he's done? We'll get the story. I'm sure George Thomas is on it like a hash tag on Team Ohio. ewbrooman1
I just noticed that the article in the ABJoke was a staff report. What a joke. Both the men's and women's Akron and Can't games have been covered the last two weekends by ABJ "staff reports." And why did GT write a feature article on the Browns logo yesterday? Not sure what the deal is over there anymore. Do the beat reporters get weekends off?
1981 grad
Thanks for the information on Evans and Robotham. I thought the parents yelling at the coaches stopped at high school. I noticed that KD has continued to start Evans but he has been getting less and less minutes. His production has tailed off offensively but you could say that for a lot of players on the team. I hope it was a one game thing because Friday is senior night and he should be recognized.
clarkwgriswold
I hope Nyles works it out. He always plays hard. I'd hate to see him end his time at Akron on a down note.
Dave in Green
Reporters do what their editors assign them to do or they get fired.I second The Hip Zip's compliment to clarkwgriswold. The overall quality of commentary on Zips basketball is going up, and part of that is due to the addition of several new forum members offering thoughtful observations. If true about Nyles, he needs to be mature about it, work it out with the coaching staff in private and act like a senior leader for a Zips team in serious need of senior leadership right now. With Noah out, a high-performing Nyles could be the difference between the team achieving another 21+ win season and tournament bid or falling short of expectations.
