Jatavis Brown

Blue & Gold

Recommended Posts

Sometimes NFL execs like guys who can "play football". Jatavis clearly fits that category. I just wish he had both "linebacker size" and "can play football" next to his name.

Is one going to be enough? Is his desire and instincts good enough to give him a chance, and to allow him to impress at the position where he stands out? And if not, will anyone make the investment in a position change with a late round or free agent MAC player?

Rose to the top of my list after hearing him speak after the bowl win. Guy is passionate, loves Akron, loves the game, and is so talented. Can't wait to see where he lands.

A guy who can deliver crushing blows without being so full of himself that you can't stand him. He seems like a genuinely humble kid. Great to see his success.

I got a chance to watch some of the NFLPA CB practices and everyone I seen they did a little piece on JB1. He really impressed the scouts with what we got to see every Saturday.... he is a heat seeking missile.
On another note : What I 1st noticed when the practice came on was all the gold Z's on his teammates helmets. Maybe its just because I'm a Zips fan but they seemed to really stick out compared to all the other random stickers.

Wow.  That would be a major move upward if he got selected in the Top 100, meaning first 3 rounds.  It would be great for him, and great for the program.

This probably also tells us that, with his tools, we'd probably be looking at Akron first-ever First Round pick if he was just a few inches taller.

In the article, he said ideally, a team would create a hybrid position for him, somewhere between linebacker and safety. I would not be at all surprised to see that happen.

With all the hybrid defense packages in the NFL these days, I wouldn't be surprised if that position already exists. I could see some team that feels he could fit their scheme reaching for him a round or 2 earlier than what many experts expect.

I wish him the best of luck.

That's my thinking.  I don't see that an NFL team is going to create a position or change what they are doing to accommodate a middle-round linebacker from Akron.  But, there very well could be a team out there that already has a place to plug in a guy with his type of ability and size.

I'm sure Belichick is aware of him, even if no one else is.

We will see what teams shows up to his pro day. I will bet it's more than just the Patriots. Also it will be interesting to see if teams have him in for official visits. Teams get 30 official visits with potential draft picks. Local college visits don't count toward those 30, so the Browns and Steelers can have him visit without him counting toward those 30. Some teams put a lot of weight on the visits, some do not. In the past 7 plus drafts about 33 percent of the team that I follow picks came from visits. Jatavis will be well known by the time the draft roles around. Here is an idea of what teams put an emphasis on visits. Awhile back I asked a coach why have in all these visits and not draft anyone that visited. His answer was, that the organization started a file on every player in the NFL and it was a chance to interview 30 kids coming into the NFL even if they were not on their team at the time, they had information for the future if needed.  Keep in mind that getting "snubbed" by the national combine isn't the worst thing in the world. Teams only get 15 minutes with those kids, if you have him in for an official visit, you get hours. I would be surprised if Jatavis didn't get some official visits. Specifically because he lacks ideal size but puts on a show when you roll the film.

Shazier is 6'1" 230. Brown will have a spot somewhere

Shazier (sitting on the trainers table) is the exact player I think of when I read about Brown's willingness to move to safety.

Shazier is a beast at LB. While im sure his injuries are frustrating, I'm not sure it would work out well for Brown or Shazier to move to safety. I think the two are good comparisons actually. They both are a bit small for their position but play fast and hard and aren't afraid to hit.
