Played at Akron.

Probably the most important point right there. Not something we can say about any other candidate. Recruiting makes me nervous.

..and I don't understand Jim Christian. It's only a matter of time until he get's let go at BC, but why does he keep coming back to the MAC after struggling at bigger schools?

Loyer intrigues me.

An outside the box hire.  Has a tie to UA basketball, though not the recent string of successes.  You could play up his experience in NBA circles and scouting to show that we're thinking differently to advance the program.

Older donors would probably embrace him due to the history, and LW can point to doing a "nationwide search to find a candidate that gets Akron, and has a vision for moving upwards and onwards."  Helps LW establish that UA Hoops isn't just defined by only the past 12 or 13 years .. it has a long, rich history of success, as the rafters demonstrate.

If he's truly in the mix, I'm comfortable with how this search is being handled.

Bring in Loyer, {name your senior assistant from the college ranks}, Dials, Futch .. and then get to work defending the MAC title!

:champs:   B)B)B)B)

Go Zips!

P.S. Would Mrs. CK attend more or fewer games in this case?

Me too.  He may not be tied to the recent success, but he is tied to the last string of high level success, both as a Player and an Asst. Coach.  I'm also trying not to be biased since Jon came here during my young "glory days" of Akron basketball.

I think it's a fair question for some people to question his possible ability to recruit.  And I'll say this.  He has most recently been an NBA Scout.  So, I think he's at least qualified to evaluate basketball players' abilities/weaknesses.  That's certainly a big part of the recruiting battle.  Also, he previously would have certainly been involved in Ohio recruiting as an Akron Asst. and Cincinnati Asst.

I also love your idea to play the "NBA Experience" card.

Georgetown now off the list.

Seems like a "make a splash" hire on the day of the National Championship. The school's most famous alumni, with no college coaching experience and not great in the NBA. I remember a few years ago the Magic wanted him to coach in the D-League.

John Thompson III had been a good coach for them, that unfortunately just had a couple bad years recently. I could see him being successful again. Obviously not coming to Akron.

Jim Christian would be reason to give up season tickets in the lower bowl.  That has to be a decoy.

When he didn't press Carmelo Betancourt or Nick Harney in the MACC game (Abreu suspended) and allowed us to run the kittens out of the Q he should be officially taken off any list of candidates for the Zips opening.  I realize that was a run on sentence, but in the spirit of Jim Christian just sit back and let a back up PG suffering from cramps and a power forward with so so ball skills control the game without ever trying to stop or pressure them.  As much as I could not stand DJ Cooper or  Stevie Taylor they could have set career highs in steals if allowed to press. Instead Jim sat back and did nothing.  I have never presumed to know more than a coach, but I was at the Q that night and the OU guys in our section were close to storming the bench.  Worst coaching I have ever seen.

I still have this game on my DVR.  The charge drawn by Melo with about 10 minutes left in the game is one of my all time favorite Zips basketball moments.  It eliminated any fight that OU had left.  Sure the kid was thrown in the deep end in more ways than one .. but when push came to shove, he made a play.  A defensive play.  A Zips basketball play.

I believe Betancourt is still the only starting Zips PG to beat OU in the MAC Tournament .. and he did it twice.

Go Zips!

Oh God no!  I follow Georgetown basketball as my son is a GU grad and JT3 has been a nightmare.  For years, he's taken some of the most athletic talent in the country and attempted to implement an offense who's primary purpose was to give unathletic squads a chance to beat athletic teams.  Without his daddy he'd never have obtained or retained that job.   I agree he might well be successful elsewhere, oddly enough in a mid-major setting, but he's nearly killed GU basketball.

I think OU feared what Zeke and Tree could do to them in the interior.  Maybe that's why we never saw more pressure.  But, there's also moments in that game where Harney and others got to the hoop because people were overplaying them looking for steals.

I don't necessarily like Christian either.  But more than anything else, it was just Our Night !!

Switching on the ball screens on Cooper was a big factor in that game as well.

Ewing is a solid choice for Georgetown. He's a Hall of Fame NBA player, and he's been an NBA assistant for some time.

His hire keeps the John Thompson loyalists...many of whom are former NBA players with deep pockets...happy.

He might actually do a good job...who knows?

FYI - If we hired Loyer, we'd be getting someone with more NBA HC experience than Patrick Ewing.

I don't even know what "switching on a ball screen" means!   Apparently, J Christian didn't either.

It's okay, you should look at it as a blessing. As a high school basketball coach, there were too many moments where I was freaking out because we weren't making the right adjustments, matchups, etc. Especially in the MAC tournament. Those are the moments I wish I didn't know what switching/hedging ball screens, slip screens, "L" cuts, "V" cuts, zipper cuts, etc. meant so that I can enjoy games more with teams that I have a rooting interest in college basketball and other basketball. Zips could win by 15 and the normal Zip fan would love the win while I'm the one freaking out about something that could kill us in a closer game. Just the life of coaching the sport I love along with rooting for the teams I love on a daily basis. Definitely not good for my health.

Has to be good for recruiting.  A 7 foot tall Hall of Famer in your living room has to leave an impresssion.

Yes.  I can just enjoy the game although it's been difficult watching the same style of stuck in the mud MAC Zips play for these last few years.  It takes me longer than 30 seconds to determine if it's zone or man to man and by then the possession is over.

Jamion Christian just won the Ben Jobe award.  I would love a swarming defense.   I think a move from a small Catholic school in Maryland where he is one of lowest paid coaches to Akron would be a reasonable choice for him

I'm coming around to Jamion Christian and Russell Turner. I wouldn't mind Loyer or Stewart either. But if my guy isn't going to be in the running, my next two would be Christian and then pick'em between Turner, Loyer, and Stewart.

Groce and Jim Christian are re=treads. I don't want them. I much rather have Groce. Like I showed in my preference list, I'd rather be the coach of the Zips than Jim Christian.

I feel like Groce would just return to the MAC until he found a bigger gig somewhere else. I hated him at OU, but he won and made it further in the tournament than Dambrot ever has.

Sometimes, ignorance is bliss!  One thing you could be sure of is that it was never going to be a zone with the UA defense (one of my pet peeves along with how they handled ball screens!).
