Game 7—@Western Michigan

I'm not going to get overly excited over this one.  It was a great win, no doubt.  Unexpected? Absolutely.

Now, beat Toledo and I'm going to be losing my mind with excitement.  Even if it's a very close game, I'll be ready to talk about a MAC East Championship possibility and a trip to Detroit.

The fact of the matter is, we should all still be trying to get a read on this team.  They're definitely improving, but what's our ceiling?  Like last year, I could see us going anywhere from 9-3 to 5-7.  In fact, we'll probably only be favored to win in 2 of our remaining games (Buffalo and Kent).

Our DL impressed me yesterday.  Was Copeland playing some DE yesterday (my video feed cut out)?  I believe I saw Copeland, Boxen & Camara in the game at the same time.

Frenchy mentioned at one crucial point pretty late in the game that our DL was entirely city alumni.  That would have to have been Deon'Tae Moore & Justin Sampson at DE & Brennan Williams & DeAndre Brimage at DT.  That speaks highly of true frosh Sampson & Brim that they're getting meaningful PT late in a 1-point game against one of the best teams in the MAC.

Letuli stuck out in a bad way yesterday, but it seems like an anomaly compared to the rest of the season as he has been mostly good/above average.

i think we can all agree that this isn't some giant win. Good to great win sure. Point is, I'm seeing a lot of alumni who never give a crap any other time show some excitement over it. I'd imagine it has to do a lot with WMU's 2016 season. Let's keep it up!

I think the film will show that Letuli got hosed on 2 of those calls.

We won the only place that counts.  I think its true that one learns more in defeat than in victory; so, we have an opportunity to learn much from this game.  Early in the game, we took advantage of the situation.  At the end, 5 found a way to seal the deal.  We won the close one.  We are right on track!

Upsetting a quality team like WMU doesn't mean a whole lot if we turn around and lose to a terrible team like Kent later in the season.

I know.  We always seem just as susceptible to the unexpected loss, as we are to benefit from an unexpected win.

Actually, maybe that makes us no different than any of the other D-1 teams in the country.

It's the 2nd biggest win we've had in the past 10 years. Use whatever adjective you'd like to describe it

Some don't want to acknowledge it, but this is true.  However, maybe that's more of a testament to the quality of our victories during that time, rather than a testament to the magnitude of this particular victory.

But I'm taking it.

In my eyes this was our best win under Bowden. We beat a 6-7 Utah State team in a glorified exhibition.

Utah State was 6-6 entering the game. The only reason you'd want to state they were 6-7 is if you wanted to diminish the win.

The "glorified exhibition," just for clarification, is also known as a "bowl game." The only reason you'd call it otherwise is if you wanted to diminish the win.

Amazing that our own fans want to diminish an Akron Zips bowl win.

I liked that 2015 Zips team, and appreciate the bowl victory. I thought it was awesome.

I agree....I was screaming at Jovan during his unfortunate series of downs early, but he has had a solid season so far, and it was out of frustration that human nature "motivated" me to write about screaming in his earhole....:D

Yeah I had the bowl game as #1. I was at the Pitt game. Yesterday was a bigger win as far as I'm concerned. Both very nice notches on the progrum's belt

Nice of you to try to insinuate what I'm thinking... Nothing you said has anything to do with what I'm saying.

I stated Utah State was a 6-7 team because that's indeed what they finished the season being. Math can be hard but if a team enters a game 6-6 and loses, they are now 6-7. Had they beat us I'd say we lost to a 7-6 team.

My gripe with the bowl system is completely unrelated to Zips football. Once upon a time making a bowl was a great reward. Now making a bowl game should be bare minimum expectation as over 60% of teams make bowls. We literally have 5-7 teams making bowl games these days. I complain about the NBA playoff system too for the same reason, its too inclusive.

At the end of the day competing and winning in the MAC is more important to me than beating some random 6-6 (as you put it) non P5 team in some obscure bowl. I'll take beating the Toledo's and Western Michigan's any day of the week over beating Utah State.

For the record I did enjoy beating Utah State. I just enjoyed beating WMU more.

I still believe making a bowl is a nice reward. The players enjoy it, the team gets extra practices, and I'm sure it's a good recruiting tool. Not to mention, as a fan, I get to see my favorite team play another game. This is probably why coach Bowden puts such a high priority, and talks so much about becoming bowl edible each year. I wonder what a player that played in the Pitt, WMU and Utah game would say his favorite victory was?

So if the Zips beat 13-0 Ohio State in the Rose Bowl, we'd have beaten 13-1 Ohio State? Ok...

Only the talking heads on TV who have hours to fill for their vapid audience care about too many bowl games. There may be too many reality TV shows on the air...but I could care less because I don't watch them. If you hate that there's too much football to watch in December and January, you don't need to watch it. Watch the Food Network.

Bowl games are crucial to MAC football programs. There was a time, not too long ago, when 10-2 MAC programs went nowhere for the post season. They went home. Now there are bowl tie-ins to reward good seasons. I couldn't be happier.

I enjoy watching football, so I like bowl games. They're always a lot of fun to watch. And I'm happy players and coaches get rewarded for a solid season . I saw videos of the Zips team in Boise, and it looked like they were having a blast.

This win was great and may be the key win of the season, but the bowl game was bigger for the overall football program. One was nationally televised, the other was streamed on a webcam at the same time as the NFL. From the perspective of wins catching recruits attention, this last game might as well not have happened.

I would disagree. I'm sure any HS recruit considering the Zips took note of the win.

And any committed recruits possibly wavering on their decision felt a little bit more secure...or even excited about their it.

Milestone win for the Zips. Assuming they finish the season strong.
