Game 27—@ BGSU

So... Wasn't able to watch any of this game live.  Can anyone explain why Virshon played only four minutes (I think)?  Fouls?  Doghouse?  I hope the kid can make a presence more often on the floor, because he can make his presence felt (so to speak!) -- he has ball and shooting skills we don't have from a freshman very often.  We need him around for four years!

I think he's been in the doghouse starting with his one game suspension.  I think Groce is trying to set an example that will help him down the line if he remains a Zip.

Both our games against BUGS were nail-biters.  BUGS seems to have a mental block against us.  There's no way that team should lose to our depleted, young roster.  They've got A LOT of firepower on that team:

Frye

Turner

Lillard

Koch

Wiggins

There's no way they should be losing to our young squad with one player over 6-6

i can't imagine a group of three referees getting together and saying, "Well, Bowling Green is the home team, so we need to give them a few breaks tonight" or "Since Akron is the away team, we need to call the fouls a little closer on them."  I believe that is all urban legend.

I don't think there's automatic bias. There are certain refs that do truly seem to have a bias against Akron. Not sure if Zippy peed in their cheerios years ago (she's a cheeky marsupial) or what, but guys like Weimer and Borowski (has he since gone full time Big Ten?) always give Akron the shaft.

Speaking for myself, I thought your comments were fine and on point.

I am still learning the MAC ways, but I do get frustrated with the refs at times. I assume the home team is going to get the benefit of the doubt on 50/50 calls. That doesn't always happen. I would think all the MAC refs would get together and agree on how they want to police specifics like moving screens, but they seem to be all over the place. A big bugaboo for me is consistency of tempo throughout the game. If the refs wake up that morning and decide to call a tight game, then please call a tight game for 40 minutes. My gripe yesterday was that a free-flowing game got a little tight there for a few minutes, but it did appear to bounce back. Refs are human too and often it balances out as you have said. My final bugaboo is I hate to see a player taken out of a game on a weak call. I have to re-watch the game to see if K-lac was really over-the-back on his 5th foul. It just looked weak at live speed. K-lac doesn't need help fouling out of a game. He does a pretty good job on his own.

And I agree, they played well and earned this one.

After further review, K-lac fouled. He had inside position. Then he gave up inside position. And then he went over the top. Ugh!!

I did watch it all again. It might be the best they have played all year, but one thing is for sure they are finally competing for the full 40 minutes.  :thumb:

I watched the game again and that final basket by Ivey wasn't an easy one. I also liked the final inbound play to Malcolm.

Many, many years ago, everyone I knew thought it resulted from the fact that we were the "Newbie" to the conference.  You'd probably think that perception doesn't exist anymore, but we certainly will never be viewed as one of a Traditional MAC Schools.

Borowski was always one who stood out to me too.

If you have a one game memory :D

Saturday at Kent, we went from a 4 point lead to a 10 point loss in the final 5 minutes.

The Zips competed the entire game at Kent.  They made some stupid frosh plays, Klac throwing the ball away while Avery from Kent hit every 3 pointer.  The Zips did compete for 40 minutes but in the last 5 minutes Kent was the better team.  The effort was there but the talent was lacking.

Tonight on ZipsLive Coach Groce reiterated that he's been happy with our effort over the last 4 games.

I concur. I'm ok with the losses as long as the effort is there; wins are that much better, too. Additionally, I think we've seen much better ball movement and defense.
