Ball State athletics teams adopted the nickname Cardinals in 1927.  Prior to that, the school's teams were known as the Hoosieroons.

 

Before being purchased by the Ball brothers of Ball jar fame, the school was known as the Normal College, Normal School and the Normal Institute.

This is incredible.  Somehow I never new the illustrious history of the Muncie Normal Hoosieroons.
