An article from the ABJ's Michael Beaven.  Apparently all the Zips have to do to get an article written by one of the ABJ's actual sports writers is make the NCAA Tournament 🙄

3 Beacon articles about the Zips today.  Marla about Groce, Beaven about Ali and GT about the team in general.  Shocking.

Is that in today's print edition?

Yes.  Print and the E-Edition.  Marla on the front page.  GT on 1C.  Beaven on 4C.

I enjoyed Marla's article on how Akron should embrace the team. But very rich in irony coming from an ABJ writer

Akron is ranked 321st in experience (1.2 years) in Division I.

That's the key IMO. It seems the guys who are here now really enjoy playing together, this should be just the first part of one hell of a run.

Nice!  I only get the ABJ online. Marla & GT's articles were posted yesterday & Beaven's was today.

You would hope that the team's late season success will make the transfer portal work in the Zips favor.  It should keep the current kids here while drawing other kids to the program.

I hope it doesn't draw attention to Groce.

"No. 13 seed Akron (24-9, MAC champion)

Akron emerged from the MAC tournament's No. 4 seed with wins over top-seeded Toledo and No. 2 seed Kent State to secure an automatic NCAA bid. Their tournament victory capped an eight-game winning streak heading into NCAA play. If they want to make it nine straight, they'll likely need second-team All-MAC forward Ali Ali (14.1 points per game, 41.2% 3-point shooting) to make a name for himself."

your post of never wanting to see Ali, Trimble (you got your wish) or Castaneda, in a Zips uniform ever again was an instant classic.  Those 8 days in February were pretty grim on here.  I was ready to start a "John's next endeavor" thread.

I like to think of myself as somewhat of a motivational speaker. I'm going to sleep well at night thinking that they heard me, made a diss track about me, and proved me wrong.

(The way they were playing back then, Groce's top Google search was Transfer Portal)

If you did, his next endeavor would be taking the Zips to the Big Dance. No one would have thought lol

I think their forums were made when Bill Walton was their Center and John Wooden was their coach. The nostalgia helps them relive their glory days from decades ago to hold onto some relevancy in the P5 world.

Re: Location

Any word on if Moorhead & Staff will be accompanying the basketball team for a combo/cost efficient west coast recruiting trip? 😉

I was wondering the same thing, not only that but is AD Guthrie going out and going to try to make some connections as well?

Not only am I wondering about recruiting but relationships for scheduling across all sports. It’s not just UCLA that will be in Portland but also Gonzaga, Georgia State, St. Mary’s, Boise State, Memphis and either Indiana or Wyoming. So schools from the PAC-12, West Coast Conference, Mountain West, American Athletic Conference, and Sun Belt to network with.

Marla's columns occasionally get picked up by the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, since both papers have common ownership.  But normally about the Browns, or generic football or baseball/basketball (NBA).  I enjoy her.

Born and raised in Akron (Green exactly), I swear I only learned Mogadore was in Summit County a year ago!  Why does Mogadore HS compete in the Portage County League?? 🤷‍♂️🙃

99.9% sure ADs always go to these types of events, even if they aren't participating.
