Absolute madness. Why do they have to meet at all? Is what makes college football great a national championship, or is it everything else. I'm of the opinion it's everything else. Quote
pdt1420 Posted October 18 Report Posted October 18 Oh that’s a completely sarcastic post. I’m firmly in the limited conference and 8 team playoff camp. Quote
GP1 Posted October 18 Author Report Posted October 18 EJ Manuel summed up the ESPN view of the college football playoff expansion this morning. He basically said that once you boil down college football to the core, it's about late season meaningful games and winning a national championship. A true company man. I almost threw up listening to him. Quote

Zips1991 Posted October 22 Report Posted October 22 Not sure where to put it but it appears we have a OOC schedule casualty resulting from the MAC 9-game schedule. https://fbschedules.com/san-jose-state-akron-cancel-future-home-and-home-football-series/?ref=bythebelt.com 1 Quote

There's just no choice but to get rid of these sorts of games. 1 2 2 Quote

Getting rid of the FCS game would mean getting rid of those type of promotions as well. Edit: Also, it's probably not exactly cheap to fly ~100 people to California and put them up in a hotel for 2 nights. There is an expense associated with playing those games. Less than the ~$300K we paid Robert Morris, but still likely a 6 figure expense. Edited October 22 by kreed5120 1 Quote

GP1 Posted Wednesday at 01:26 PM Author Report Posted Wednesday at 01:26 PM The guys on Full Ride are talking about this. https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/acc/2026/10/27/dave-doeren-nc-state-football-nil-resources-comments-press-conference/92467483007/ My question is this. If you have high level expectations for the Zips, is the University financing your expectations? The Zips are exactly what they are paying for. If this doesn't change, firing Joe is an exercise in firing to hire only to fire again. This is a losing equation. The next guy will just be another victim. Coaching football is extremely difficult. The head coach can't be the fundraiser. The AD needs to do this work. He seems to be doing well, but the Zips need a lot more. Quote
egregiousbob Posted Wednesday at 01:31 PM Report Posted Wednesday at 01:31 PM It's all about building an enduring culture, something Moorhead has failed to do. Sure, the portal is an excuse, but I've seen too many occasions where a player has done something blatantly stupid without being held accountable. Culture is the characteristic that has made OU successful - look at the coaching changes they have had in the past five years yet they're still at the top of the standings. Payers go there to get better and they receive the coaching to accomplish that. It could be that Moorhead never wanted to complete his gig in Akron - he was expecting a relatively easy turnaround that would catapult him to a higher level, better paying program. This, he never put the cultural foundation in place. 1 Quote

I agree, doing the same thing over and over again but expecting a different result is the definition of insanity. I'm actually not opposed to firing Joe, but it would only make sense to do if we have the funding in place to actually compete. Otherwise whoever we bring in will continue to just win 1-4 games per year and we'll be calling for their heads in 4 years as well. Quote

You can't fix stupid. Our financial position leaves us with the dummies of the world. Did Indiana fix their culture or did Mark Cuban just buy a bunch of star players? Indiana's coach wouldn't be winning with the crap they used to put on the field. 4 Quote

There is no excuse for us being at the very bottom of the MAC not even being able to beat a single FBS school. Finances don't got nothing to do with Poor Coaching and Poor Leadership. And did we not forget this embarrassment? Can't even win in the goddamn classroom Accountability matters and we need to stop blaming everyone but the damn coach who handpicked the roster and his coaching staff. AkronAlumnus Posted Wednesday at 02:51 PM Report Posted Wednesday at 02:51 PM I hate calling for anyone to lose their job because there’s a human element to it, but JoeMo just isn't it. Idk if firing him is the right move given our financial situation, but I understand everyone’s point that keeping him essentially means accepting the same losing, complacent, and broken culture. I genuinely thought things would change this year after how last season ended, but if they didn’t change this season, I don’t see why we’d expect anything different in his final year. 1 Quote

dre22era Posted Wednesday at 03:01 PM Report Posted Wednesday at 03:01 PM (edited) Oh and if you are wondering here is where Akron Soccer ranks in the Big East regarding our budget. HOW COME THEY DON'T SUCK? All about the $$$ huh #GreatLeadershipMatters Edited Wednesday at 03:02 PM by dre22era Quote
kreed5120 Posted Wednesday at 03:17 PM Report Posted Wednesday at 03:17 PM (edited) Soccer is more comparable to what college athletics was 20 years ago. There isn't big money in it like there is college football and college basketball. There are no Big East Soccer roster paying players $5+ million. There are however MAC football rosters where players are getting paid a cumulative $5M+. That's the point you're conveniently overlooking. Akron year after year is getting their best players raided by teams that have more NIL money. College soccer still functions very much as an amateur sport which is why Akron is able to compete. College football at the P4 level has evolved into professional football and at the G6 level it's at least at a semi-pro level. If Akron can't pay a QB, RB, WR, etc he's going to go to WMU, Toledo, Miami, or somewhere else that he can get paid. Players go where the money is. No different than I'm sure you'd leave your current job if a competitor offered you an extra $100k per year to do the same exact job. Edit: Reports are Miami (OH) between revenue share and NIL is fielding an $8-$10 million roster. It's professionals competing against amateurs. Edited Wednesday at 03:23 PM by kreed5120 Quote
