Early Signing Day February 1st, What else is needed

I believe that the football early signing day is now one month away (catdaddyp please correct me if I am wrong).  I have reviewed the commit list in the Nation and have attended and watched the games this year and here are my comments on the additional needs.  I am assuming that the current recruits are good and competent.

-1. Ensure Wassel remains committed.  A future QB is greatly needed.  If he is red-shirted, he could be a 4-year starter.

-2. A senior QB transfer to bridge the gap for Wassel

-3. Defensive linemen, one additional freshman 300 lb DT and 3 transfer portal additions due to the graduation losses

-4. WR, one portal transfer to replace Jacques-Louis.  We currently have 3 excellent transfer receivers, and one addition will allow the Zips to sustain the three good receivers, and this addition will allow the young WR's to develop.

-5. OL, one portal transfer to replace Whigan and allow the youngsters to develop

-6. DB, one portal transfer to allow the youngsters to develop

-7. LB, one portal transfer, two if Bubba is not coming back.  I think it is crazy that he may be coming back for his 7th season.

-8. TE, No needs this year

-9. RB, No needs this year, Coach Joe has raved about Kellom, and we have Wiley, Price, and Norrils

I am not sure about the allowable number of recruits, but here are my thoughts.  Based on the commitment list and my comments, the recruitment numbers are:

High School Seniors - 16

Portal Transfers - 9

I am also curious how many players Coach is going to shed off of the current roster.

Yep, signing day is right around the corner. It seems like all of our HS verbals are solidly committed so I don’t expect many (if any) surprises.

It’ll be interesting to see how it all plays out. There are no limits in how many players can be taken in the 2023 and 2024 classes as long as we are at the 85 scholarship limit. So if there ever was a time to nudge some players out the door, this is it.

I would like to make the following additions/changes to the list posted above while keeping the list intact:  I have heard Coach say he wants to build the team through recruiting freshmen and supplement with the portal, so here are my additions.

-Add an additional DT as a freshman for the future along with the one DT and DE commitment and keep the portal additions

-WR - no change

-OL, I would like to add a 3rd freshman along with a transfer portal as stated above.  This will help allow the team to develop

-LB, up the transfers to 2 with Boateng leaving and add a second freshman recruit

-Now with Norrils entering the portal, I will continue to say no immediate RB needs.

Go Zips!!!

My friend has Twitter and sent me a tweet from Wasel from a few days ago that he was excited one of his HS teammates was offered by Akron (class of 2026). That leads me to believe he is fully committed!

I guess I'll post this article here. It could have gone in a number of different threads. The article talks about how Early Signing Day (December 21st) and the Transfer Portal have taken much of the luster off of the traditional Signing Day which has (always?) been on the first Wednesday of February.

One enlightening quote, concerning the impact of the Transfer Portal, from former Zips RB and current Buchtel HC Bryan Williams:

“You've got to tell your players, 'If you get an offer and you feel as though that that's the school where you want to be, hey, man, you've got to commit to that school because that offer may not be there.' You got it probably in December, and, in January, it may not be there because they've got a guy that they may pull from the portal. So you have to be strategic.”

Great quote. Tracking which offers still stand is near impossible without speaking to the players themselves. To take it even further, the majority of kids getting offers in the 2025 and 2026 classes will need to be re-offered by the time they are seniors.

Why will they need to be re-offered?

The offers going out that early are basically so coaches have the chance to build a relationship and not miss out on a big time prospect. Players usually aren’t really “on the board” until their junior year. Some of the kids offered will not develop as expected, so the staff will no longer recruit them. A new staff is also a reason. Usually kids will need to be re-offered by a new staff as most of the former offers will not be honored.

I'm far from an expert on the ins and outs of offers, but I believe "official" offers can't go out until something like the summer or fall of their senior year. So we could offer them now and they could commit I suppose, but a lot could change between now and then for both the player and the coach/program causing it to really mean nothing. Really doesn't mean much when an official offer is sent either, as we see all the time new coaches don't honor offers of commits from the prior staff.

I miss the old "first Wednesday in February" signing day. I used to go down to the University for every press conference. There were always some good stories. Coaches would give a power point highlighting all the recruits and say a little about them. Many names were a surprise...not like now, where every player and school can announce their commitment via their own social media.

One funny memory - Eugene Jarvis was being recruited by both Kent and Akron. Once Jarvis' power point slide showed up, Brookhart raced through it...I guess Jarvis had decommitted, and chose Kent at the absolute last second.

My favorite quip: Kent recruited 3 players from McKinley's '97 state championship team. A reporter told Lee Owens - "Dean Pees is bragging how he stole DeMarlo Rozier from you." Owens replied - "I think DeMarlo looked at our roster, and figured his best chance to get playing time would be at Kent." Note - Owens was 7-2 vs. Kent in his 9 years at UA.

Reno Ferri once met a bunch of ZN.o members at the Barley House and gave a first hand account of all the recruits. Other coaches were there having some beers to celebrate the close of the recruiting reason. Fun times...I miss those days.

Great memories, indeed!  The anticipation was much more palpable.

LO and his Packer inspired unis were certainly dominant during that period of the rivalry.

One small edit - the debriefing with Reno was actually held at Ohio Brewing Company, when they were next door to the Barley House adjacent to Lock 3 during that period 🍺🍺🍺
