MAC Bowls and G5 Bowl Games

The MAC champion needs a better assignment than the Cure Bowl against Liberty... not a knock on that bowl nor on the Flames program but winning a conference championship should get you paired with a P5 school or at the very least another G5 champion.

Congratulations to the Mid American Conference.  This year may be the best bowl results ever for the conference.  It could have been better, but BGSU lost their QB to injury with MacDonald and Miami may have also lost their QB to an injury (not sure).  The MAC could have been 5-1 or 6-0 versus 4-2.  However, a very good year to be proud of.  Our competition is getting stiffer, and that is a good thing.

Good post and I agree.

I know it's hard to see, but we aren't that far away from a bowl and a bowl win.

After last year's Transfer Portal signings, I was expecting a bowl and a bowl win in 2022.  I posted as such a couple of times earlier this year.  I think I overestimated the talent of the Portal additions and was let down by the Offensive Line, Defensive Line, and especially the Quarterback Irons.  I have come to believe that Akron's portal additions were not as good as the rest of our competition's additions.  Also, the University of Akron is not a preferred destination for students as well as athletes.  We are signing the less talented TP players who are not in demand by other schools.  Regarding students, I saw an article that showed that the Akron student enrollees has fallen from 26k in 2012/13 to 16k in 2020/21.  The image of the University is very poor these days.  I have hired about 20-25 students into my company, and now I am not allowed to hire any additional students due to the very poor image of the university.

The University needs to turn the corner on the academic as well as football front.  That transformation needs to happen now.  I love my alma mater, but currently, I am not happy with the status of events.

I love the University of Akron!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Proenza hangover has been difficult to recover from. Too much growth, too fast and not considering changing state/regional demographics. While enrollment is down, that's a common story among Ohio public universities. I'm less concerned about quantity and more interested in quality but I don't know if that is being accomplished. Even OSU has had some bad years recently. I think Dr. Miller is doing a good job all things considered.

There is no shame in being wrong about win predictions. Our job as fans is to be overly optimistic. I don't think fans realized how horrible the program was the 3-4 years prior to Joe. He took over a DIII team. Making the team as competitive as they were this year showed me the guy can get the team to a bowl game next season or maybe 5 wins. Probably 5 becausr the scheduling is so moronic. It's an easy league to get good in.

Also, for those that haven't seen, Cincinnati FC is hosting a bowl game next year. The Cincinnati Chili Bowl. I wonder if the MAC will have a tie in.

I don't think that's a done deal yet. They're just interested in hosting one. It would still need to be approved by the NCAA.

Very impressive bowl season for the MAC.

Two yards away from 5-1 but then again also weakest strength of opponent of all conferences this postseason as well... need better bowl tie-ins

I have always thought a college bowl game should be held in Canton at the NFL Hall of Fame.. would definitely interest the players especially if o e tie-in was from a more distant part of the country where the players may not have the opportunity to visit otherwise

Great idea. I recommend restricting the participating teams to those from south of the Mason-Dixon line to give them the thrill of playing in northern Ohio in late December.

Not a bad idea. If a game can be played in Idaho, why not Canton? It would be nice if the NFL put a cover over the stadium like the one in Los Angeles but they have already put a ton of money into the location.

Weather probably isn't what would be holding up a bowl game in Canton. Despite the fact that Boise is at both a higher elevation and latitude than Canton there is little difference between the two locations in December precipitation and temperature. Boise is a tad warmer and wetter than Canton. My guess would be that finding an entity willing to pony up the cash to cover a long-term commitment for a D1 bowl game in Canton could be problematic, but if such a benefactor could be located he/she/it would have naming rights to the bowl game. The GP1 Bowl has a nice ring to it.

If it was to happen, I'd imagine the Hall of Fame Village would be the host. I don't see it happening anytime soon though as the village isn't on the greatest financial footing at the moment.

Canton is awesome. They’ve really begun to turn that into a nice destination at the HOF, and a bowl game there would be great. For one, it’s the freaking pro football Hall of Fame! It’s in a great football area, close to a couple of airports, the game is played in an NFL facility. Make it happen!
