Maybe I'm late to this topic (I did not see any other mentjuon in the forums - sorry if I missed it), but I saw this mentined yestreday on Footbal Scoop and it looks like his son is already on campus for spring football (at QB).

Correct!  It's being discussed in the Wide Receivers thread.

Fessler to UCLA doesn’t make sense based upon on field results, but good for him. Joe Mo spoke highly of him so he may very well have a high ceiling.

Housewright feels like a home run hire. Local guy, previously worked with Moorhead at Miss St and Oregon it appears, and was an elite FCS coordinator in the toughest conference of that division.

Local guy? Where is he from?

I do wonder if Fessler was calling plays in the first half of the season and then had those responsibilities taken away. He’ll certainly receive a pay bump as he was making $110k here and UCLA’s lowest paid position coach made $310k (according to USA Today). Not sure how much cost of living will offset that. Good luck to him.

I also think it’s only a matter of time before Wartman, Bell, and Renna are climbing the ranks.

Great play design and something we’ll probably see next year. On a different note, I’m not so sure it’s coincidence this popped up on my timeline….

I would definitely call this hiring an upgrade. Only time will tell though.

Hiring JD is a bit confusing to me. A lot has changed since he last coached.

Yeah, the world has become full of 💩's. We need good people like JD in positions of power.

How to play WR in 2005: See ball. Catch ball.

How to play WR in 2024: See ball. Catch ball.

yeah the "a lot has changed" take would have some merit if he was maybe a coordinator/involved in game planning, but I don't see how it affects a positional coach too much.

Well, far more goes into being a coach than telling a guy it’s better to catch the ball than to not to. It’s a little bit of both. On one hand, he is extremely familiar with Akron and a few guys on staff. Also had a very successful coaching career. On the other hand, he last coached guys who were born in the 1980s and there was nothing called the transfer portal to deal with. I’m sure it’ll be fine, but it’s very reasonable to question and expect there to be a learning curve while getting back on the recruiting trail, if they even have him recruit at all.

Your point about recruiting is a good one. Position coaches are teachers, strategists and salesmen. JD is really good at the relationship and selling part. Maybe they need a boost in that area. I don't know because I don't care enough about recruiting to follow it closely.

What can JD bring to the table?  "Class"!  When Kent's star went down for the count early in the season, JD reached out personally to that young man.  Football is a violent game, but charactor maters (think Gathings).  I hope JD can play a major role in evaluating recriutes; so we can all be proud of our Zips win or loose.  I remember as a high school kid briefly meeting Lou Groza at Hiram college.  What a kind and humble guy.  An hour or so later, I sat with a couple buddies in the grass a few feet off the side line, and watched that same man transformed.  When the whistle blows, I want to see that violence come out, but do it with class.

Class and character are different things.

I double checked this issue and once again the husband of the luckiest woman in the world is correct. While both words are nouns, they can be used to describe two distinctly different things.

Class: a group of students who are taught together.

Character: a person in a novel, play, or movie.
