Reslife4Life Posted November 28, 2024 Report Posted November 28, 2024 Well we have reached a lull in the Zips Athletic calendar. Just thought it could be fun to post in all 3 groups this thread. What is your favorite Zips game/moment that you watched and remember fondly For me with basketball, I would have to go with the 2020 home game vs Eastern Michigan. Seemed like the trap game of all trap games, scoring in the mid 50s. Xeyrius Williams knocks down a huge 3 to take the lead with less than 5 seconds to go. And Channel Banks has an absolute lockdown defensive 1 on 1 to deny EMU a shot at the buzzer. Special game with one of the greatest Zips teams ever Quote
Let'sGoZips94 Posted November 28, 2024 Report Posted November 28, 2024 (edited) 2011 MAC Championship game. The Zeke block, McNeese block, and ensuing chaos on the Akron side of the arena... Pure cinema. A close second is the first game of the 2009 MAC Tourney vs Toledo. Humpty Hitchens and Brett McKnight delivering that win for us that started 4 wins in ,4 days to win the MAC. After that game, we got home and watched the Syracuse/UCONN 6OT thrilled in the Big East tourney. Perfect night of basketball. Edited November 28, 2024 by Let'sGoZips94 2 Quote
clarkwgriswold Posted November 28, 2024 Report Posted November 28, 2024 Zips OVC Championship game over Middle Tennessee in 1986 to get them into the tournament. 2 Quote
adzip Posted November 28, 2024 Report Posted November 28, 2024 Also in 1986, game in the Jar against Cleveland State. In a sense it was a rivalry game between two up and coming coaches- Bob Huggins for the Zips and Kevin Mackey at Cleveland State. The atmosphere was beyond electric. The previous game Akron beat Kent before some 5500 fans; the Cleveland State game had an announced attendance of 7186! The JAR never had close to that many seats even with all bleacher seating on the upper level and behind the baskets. The aisles were completely packed. People jammed themselves together; the fire marshals must have been sent to a bar somewhere for drinks. The place was rocking! The Zips won that one but it was the atmosphere that made it super special. 3 Quote
clarkwgriswold Posted November 28, 2024 Report Posted November 28, 2024 Mouse McFadden and Eric McLaughlin in that game. 1 Quote
RoyalBlu Posted November 28, 2024 Report Posted November 28, 2024 Any of those Bosley-Ball matchups vs. Kent State. I can't pick out any specific one because they all seemed to be nail-biting cliff-hangers no matter who won with a lot of great plays on either side. Quote

Those were terrific games to experience! Quote
1981 grad Posted November 29, 2024 Report Posted November 29, 2024 Great thread!! My memory sucks so I cannot remember the opponent but the opposing team had the ball with 3 seconds left and the game is tied. They throw the ball down the court and nobody touches it, Akron Ball. No Akron player gets open and we throw the ball into Big Dog who turns and drains a three pointer at the buzzer. ( I am certain not the play KD drew up.) First time all season he shot a 3. Akron has had some dominant centers including Zeke, Big Dog and Freeman. Also, last years game against Kent and it was Kent's third last possession. Kent player gets a rebound and goes to score to take the lead and Freeman blocks it from behind. It was an amazing block!!! Kent then scores on the next possession and then the Kent player fouls Tribble because he thought they were behind. (You can't make this stuff up) Tribble makes both free throws for the win. 1 Quote
RoyalBlu Posted November 29, 2024 Report Posted November 29, 2024 That was against Bowling Green .. I was sitting along the baseline and watched it all ... one of those games you need to win a championship ... should have lost it, but somehow won it!!! Quote
RoyalBlu Posted November 29, 2024 Report Posted November 29, 2024 Re: Bosley-Ball: This conjures a really great era in MAC basketball when all the good MAC teams actually played two PGs together. Pardon and McCleod at BG, Mestas and Frierson at Miami, Mitchell and Huffman at Kent .. can't remember their names, one was Conelius ??? and the other guy (from Zanesville, O.) at Marshall. All around the league there was really good guard play with the top tier teams all starting two PGs at the same time. The good old days. Quote
