csims0917 Posted 9 hours ago Report Posted 9 hours ago Goodrich wants to sell out the EMU homecoming game. That is BOLD. I wanna see how he plans to pull that off Quote

Maybe it's all politics and pandering but I always fall for it if so. I think there's a bit of that, but it comes from an aspirational mindset. I don't think he's necessarily bullshitting anyone (or "playing politics" if we're trying to be nice), even if he knows it's a bit pie-in-the-sky. If they can get even 20,000 for the EMU game, that should triple the resolve to get rid of the garbage Tuesday games on the next TV deal. "Even Akron can get a full house for a Saturday game." Yeah, you're giving up TV money that probably exceeds net ticket sales gain. But you're also doing a lot to build longer-term fanbase relationships. Of course, thinking long-term has never been the MAC's forte. Edited 8 hours ago by exit322 1 Quote
kreed5120 Posted 8 hours ago Report Posted 8 hours ago I do like Goodrich's optimism. It's probably not a great time to be an AD at a G5 school with costs soaring, but budgets getting slashed. All that said, I don't see Infocision selling out again in my lifetime, at least not for Akron football. Certainly not against a program like EMU. There is a lot less community in sports than there was 3-4 decades ago. People care much more about the large spectacle events, even if it means just watching on TV instead of in person. MAC football isn't that. Quote

MAC football isn't that. The optimism is desperately needed with those budget slashings and such. Can make up for some of it. Even if they can get 20,000 people, that would be a big step forward. 72 Roo Posted 6 hours ago Report Posted 6 hours ago Goodrich's positivity and vision are much welcomed. You can't do the improbable unless you can envision it and proclaim it can be done. When Andrew was at USF he tackled attendance at football games. No one believed he could make big improvements for the usual litany of excuses. He had near sellouts of three games when the local skeptics felt he couldn't do it for one. It's possible at UA. This team has potential and more talent than in the past. They can go 6-6. With W's over RMU, KSU, EMU, CMU and UMass all we have to do is take one from UNLV or OU. That is doable. I think there is reason to be excited about this season. I will do my best to help sellout homecoming. Why not? It's better than sitting around complaining. 2 2 Quote

If we had a stadium as large as where USF plays...I'd say that an Akron sellout is probably really not possible, hahaha I'd kinda rather they push for the "sellout" to be against Robert Morris, but I also understand a (it darn well better be) 56-3 win isn't exciting either. I'm not in disagreement that 6-6 is attainable. Based off the games you have marked as wins that would put Akron at 2-3 heading into this game. That's not going to excite Joe Akron to attend. All this said, I'm not really complaining. Nor am I trying to talk anyone out of attending. I have no problem with lofty targets. If they get 20K that would be great. I'd feel better about the reality of nearing a sell out if the cards fell right that we got to host Kent on a Saturday during homecoming. Quote
MangoZip Posted 6 hours ago Author Report Posted 6 hours ago Another clip of Joe. Interesting when he discusses their plan for building the roster and replacing players lost in the portal 1 Quote

Kent (or even any Ohio school) being the opponent for Homecoming would make this more attainable. 2-3 feels like a reasonable record leading into this one. Just sucks that the Tuesday games (and Black Friday) mean that this is their last shot of the year...on October 10...for hoping for any kind of crowd. Quote
csims0917 Posted 5 hours ago Report Posted 5 hours ago Isn't it true that neither Akron nor Kent will make the wagon wheel on homecoming, so they have two separate boosted attendance games instead of one double boosted game? Quote

I don't know if there's any formal such agreement in place, but it makes sense. Of course...Akron hasn't exactly boosted homecoming attendance in a bit, so I'm not sure it affects anything, haha Quote

I don't remember which game was homecoming last year. Quote

Everything is impossible...until someone does it. No one has ever actually tried to fill a Zips football stadium since Mike Waddell back in the early 2000's. "Build it and they will come." It's that simple, huh? Who knew you'd actually need to exert an effort to bring people to Infocision in respectable, profit-bearing numbers? Guthrie prioritized his grammar school-level Graphic Designer skills over expending any effort to address it. Others were let off the hook the day Scarborough lazily claimed "I wouldn't have built that stadium" (so the empty seats aren't my fault). That's a really easy, one-size-fits-all excuse way to avoid tackling the issue. Valid for a lifetime. If Goodrich publicly states he's going to fill the stadium, that's infinitely better than anything I've seen in the past 2 decades. It takes guts...guts that the Rhodes, Helsel, Wistercill, Williams and Guthrie's never showed. I trust that he has a decent plan. If it doesn't sell out, the increased attendance over recent history will still be noteworthy. 1 Quote

I guess the difference in mentality here is "this isn't my fault" versus "we have it, may as well use it." Which, they did use it for the Akron FC games this summer (not that those have any risk of filling the place up, but it's still being used). The hope I have is in that they did get a decent crowd for the Kent game last year. It's enough that I'm willing to see what he comes up with. Quote
