exit322 Posted yesterday at 04:32 AM Report Posted yesterday at 04:32 AM Props to the crowd. A nice crowd for a Tuesday and they were into the game. Too bad the coach wasn't. Quote
ZippyDoo Posted yesterday at 04:49 AM Report Posted yesterday at 04:49 AM as the players were coming out after the game, someone killed at Morehead and said way to go Coach, but he just looked over. Even the announcers were all over the coaching decisions not going for on fourth and woman. They pointed out that it was less than a yard and can't was averaging over 6 yards of Carrie and you're one and seven playing the number one team in the back you have to go for it. They disagree with the short kick off after taking the lead they didn't understand that it's just so obvious the pee poor decisions that are making now and even the media is pulling it out as it's happening Quote
exit322 Posted yesterday at 05:03 AM Report Posted yesterday at 05:03 AM Despite putrid gameday coaching, the atmosphere continues to improve. Really impressed with Goodrich. Going to be a Herculean task next week to get a similar crowd for Western. Quote
exit322 Posted 15 hours ago Report Posted 15 hours ago A post mortem of sorts From Joe's body language on the sidelines (he was getting heckled and heard it loud and clear), this very much had a "look at the Browns coach on the sideline that's getting fired after this Steelers game" vibe. Akron can't afford to fire Joe, and I don't want them to waste the money they don't have on it (if a booster is donating for it, then fine, go for it)...but Joe knows his tenure is effectively dead in the water, and so does everyone else. I do feel a little bad for him on that. We can (mostly) all agree that he wants to win, and he is trying to win. It's just not coming together. Which sucks, he has recruited well, we have bowl-level talent. He just can not coach them up, and he just can not have confidence in his guys. It's sad. Good on Zips fans, though. Got a good 3000+ in the stands on a Tuesday for a 1-7 team. I can only imagine what we'd get if the team were .500 and had hope, and all of their games on Saturdays... 1 Quote
kreed5120 Posted 15 hours ago Report Posted 15 hours ago (edited) Safety play this year has been horrendous. They take terrible pursuit angles and frankly don't seem to have the open field quickness. That 60 yard pass play should have been like a ~15 yard gain. The safety took a poor angle and it led to a huge TD. If Akron is forced to bring back Joe they absolutely must bring in a new DC or DB coach. There are holes on this roster, but from a talent perspective that's the biggest. It's clearly not attracting lots of students, so why punish your other fans? Quote

There are two types. 1 - guys who want a job that have done it before and can not get one, probably that have worked with Joe before 2 - guys who are taking a title promotion and are basically taking a shot on themselves I have no doubt they'll have as full a staff as they want to have. The quality, we can have that discussion. 1 Quote

If you post it another 40 times, it still won’t be true. Akron has $600k to fire an underperforming coach. If it didn’t it should sign up for Division 3. $600k buyout money is chump change, and and expected cost of doing business at the G5 level. No school serious about D1 football would keep what they felt was an underperforming coach around for a full calendar year just to save $600k. 1 Quote
AkronAlumnus Posted 13 hours ago Report Posted 13 hours ago Im seeing growing discontent on Facebook and X around Coach Moorhead Quote
UAZipster0305 Posted 13 hours ago Report Posted 13 hours ago Everyone is focusing on the two big plays that killed us at the end of the game. What isn't getting attention is the terrible play call to throw short and back across the center of the field on the second or third drive that resulted in the pick 6. Unless that play is perfectly executed, there is high likelihood that it will be disastrous. That play should never be called! Broughton made that pass off one foot and moving away from the direction of the pass, so it was inaccurate and soft. The play also came at a time when we were absolutely dominating, especially in the run game. There was no reason for it! That single play put OU ahead at half when we absolutely dominated everything except the scoreboard. Infuriating! 2 Quote

Not to mention that unless Joe sits out a year from coaching or serves as a volunteer, that $600k does not have to be paid out. When he gets another job, the contract is over. Quote

In this day and age hires, even for coordinator positions, need to generate excitement if you want boosters to open up their checkbooks. With Joe's performance he will be a tough sell to fans. Edit: He might be more forgiven if he wasn't also Akron's OC. He can't really shed the blame behind close doors. Edited 13 hours ago by kreed5120 Quote
UAZipster0305 Posted 13 hours ago Report Posted 13 hours ago What I took from last night is that despite a disparity in NIL spending (and/or overall program budget), the talent is there to not only compete, but to dominate the best team in the conference. However, the in game coaching is not sufficient to win with any kind of regularity. 2 1 Quote

It depends on him choosing to take employment next year after the fact that he was fired by UA. That is a total unknown. I believe it was Bowden who volunteer coached for a year or two after being fired, so UA had to continue paying out his contract. Quote

It's certainly possible they're already having discussions internally on how to get this all sorted. I don't get the sense there's a particularly adversarial relationship in the office (which would be a difference from the end of Bowden's tenure). All of this is to say that...we don't know what's coming, haha Edited 12 hours ago by exit322 Quote
MangoZip Posted 11 hours ago Report Posted 11 hours ago JoeMo does get a lot of criticism (and often deservedly so) but he should get some credit for one thing: this team did come out ready to play last night. It would have been awful easy for a 1-7 team to come out and just go through the motions and take an ass beating. The 1-7 team came out and dominated the 6-2 team everywhere except the scoreboard. 1 Quote

Every team should come out ready to play no matter their record when there is NIL potential at the end of the season. Despite the team coming out ready to play, Joe's play calling & decision making proceeded to kill any momentum throughout the game. 3 Quote

Blue & Gold Posted 5 hours ago Report Posted 5 hours ago 1 hour ago, MangoZip said: Pay wall 😤 Ugh 🤦♂️ Recaps the game and, obviously, talks about CB. One thing I learned c/ the short kickoff after we had taken the lead in the 4th... Moorhead explained Akron had hoped to execute a "sky kick" to the Ohio 25, not the 40, while avoiding dynamic Bobcats return man Darren James-Hamilton. Concerning CB: Broughton has intangibles the Zips should covet. He accepts coaching. He doesn't blame teammates. He takes his leadership role seriously, even making a concerted effort to maintain it during his rehabilitation from injury. Quote
