  1. I understand that a player's safety is becoming increasingly important in football, which, obviously is a good thing. With that being said, I have no idea what the targeting rule is in college. I suppose I'm jaded. As far as I can tell (from watching every Zips game since they instituted the rule), any time an Akron player makes any kind of hit that could be close to anything described above, they get flagged, and ejected. When it happens to an Akron player, not so much. As the hit happened, I turned to an Akron cameraman and said "that's targeting, and an ejection in Akron, I can't believe that's not even a flag here"...he responded, "they just threw the flag." I have heard multiple times, "the officials are erring on the side of caution when it comes to targeting." At the very least, they didn't do that. At some point and time of my life, I would like to ask Alvin what he thought of that call. I'll have a guess he can describe it with two letters from the alphabet.

  2. I would be shocked if they did, honestly. Lazy ass GT taking vacation during the biggest game of the season is par for the course.

  3. Must See TV tomorrow night. Thanks, Clark...have a happy Christmas. I hope you get that Christmas bonus and that your in-laws don't show up unannounced in a Winnebago. Oh, and I hope there isn't a squirrel living in your Christmas tree.

  4. I am hoping for 1 or 2 more kids from Portugal (hopefully like Joao) for 2018. I thought I heard one of the assistants may have been over there recruiting some more a few months back.

  6. I think most are willing to admit he's a vast improvement over his awful predecessor, but it has been 6 years. Not calling for his head like some, but the statute of limitations on misery he inherited is running out.

  7. If you have the chance to pick your bowl, you pick the bowl that gives you the most exposure and the biggest payout. That was the Boca Raton Bowl. It's on the coaching staff to get the team ready to play, which we were not. Nobody can defend Bowden, yet suggest we should have avoided FAU because they are "dangerous". This is FAU, a team that was a perennial ESPN #1 Bottom Ten team, at worst sharing the spot with FIU with the "I" and "A" rotating in and out in the logo GIF. Yes, they got Kiffin, but they were 3-9 last year. They finished this year 11-3. After 5 years of Bowden, we should not be getting embarrassed, especially by the likes of FAU. No more excuses.

  8. Watching Princeton/MTSU. Zips fan in Akron jersey front row behind basket ... is that you Z.I.P.?

  9. Day 1. Game 1 under way. Princeton & Middle Tennessee players did not know words to Hawai'i Pono'i, Hawaii's national anthem. Coaches gotta prepare their teams better!!!

  10. I don't believe the matchup had much to do with the blow out. I don't think FAU is 50-3 better than us. I think our preparation was pitiful with the play-calling equally abysmal. Additionally, how many people do you think are actually watching that game?

  11. So this young man, and I mean young, is pretty gifted. Doesn’t play HS soccer, just for Internationals. Kinda shortish, but skilled on and off the ball. Is very intelligent, seems quick. Probably a left-side fullback....fits Zips style. Bulldogs probably would love to have him....but the verbal commit probably will nix any chances...

  12. All dre does is come on here to bitch. He lives in MD I believe, so he doesn't attend games anyways. Talk about pot calling the kettle black!

  13. His head is down, and his helmet smacks his face mask, and turns his head sideways. And that's before any other part of the defender made contact. The image shows it clearly. Don't give us the crap that he was dipping his shoulder in some attempt to make it look like he was intending to hit his body with his shoulder. Listen to the commentators unquestionably stating that they were expecting an ejection. How one feels about the abilities of their team's players should have ZERO to do with the judgement of what happened on this particular play. But I will tell you that a player who would be characterized as well-disciplined wouldn't do something that dirty, and that late. Seems right on par for your coach who's already has a bad reputation for years, knowingly wanted to run up the score, and doesn't seem to have any hesitation to immaturely call an opponent's top-level administrator a Dick in front of his child, at a press conference. Maybe you have no knowledge of how vital it is for college athletic programs to rely upon their fraternity-like relationships with other administrators and coaches Please, come back here and tell us what you think of your now-beloved coach when he does jump ship on you guys, and hangs all of you out to dry.

  14. We won't know how good or bad recruiting has been until these guys get on a college football field and play. Thats especially true at the level where most MAC teams recruit and play. The obvious exceptions appear to be the Toledos,NIUs,OUsand maybe a WMU. Those teams have been consistently good in the MAC and competed fairly well against higher level competition outside the MAC. I realize that Ianello did nothing positive for the program. But,6 years later we are finally in a MAC championship albeit against a far superior opponent. Now, this coaching regime has to take the next step and become more consistently competitive IN THE MAC. That is going to mean an upgrade in the athletes on the field. Bowden has been able to bring in some individual players who have excelled at this level. And,thats a start. But,after watching the Toledo and FAU games we realize that quality up and down the roster is not quite there, yet. Bowden has to find more Jatavis Brown,Ulysees Gilbert,Jojo Natson etc type players at more positions. He and the AD also need to take an objective look into what if any adjustments need to be made to what goes on on the sideline. 2018 now becomes another critical season because the program needs to take 'the next step'. It needs to consistently win 6 games in the MAC. And,thats going to mean being able to compete more favorably against the Toledos,OUs,Nius etc. Hope this season got them 'over the hump'.

  16. Unfortunately, I've seen it far too often, for far too long. I just needed to vent. But, I'll anticipate the extensive coverage and features we will see in the coming days, before and after the Suckeye's meaningless game.

  17. Just for the record, nobody would have let me anywhere near an Honors facility back in my academic days. Good for you, Zippy5. Maybe it will get to that point. Just for perspective, people were just starting to learn about Personal Computer when I was in college, and we were still playing Pong and Space Invaders on a TV screen.

  18. Easy chief. The comment wasn't to downgrade that awful hit, it was a jab at zipper_head completely missing that the hit was clearly targeting. No way I would promote that type of a dirty hit. Sorry you missed my point.

  19. Wow. Well doesn't that suck. Good thing he's not on the team. There is ZERO reason to do that. I hate it when I see a young man get stupid around negative influences & throw away their future. It's so easy to get carried away & be dumb when you're young. And yes, that's definitely him.

  20. What will happen is that Fleck will be only average at Minnesota and then return to the MAC to coach Akron. Sort of like Groce in basketball

  21. I guess you closed your eyes when the held players to the ground, pushed their helmets into the ground, and the other cheap shots they took. That's not football, that's thuggery.

  22. I agree. However, watching Kiffin and so many others, I don't know how any recruit can even begin to trust that the recruiting coach will be there by the time he graduates (or even plays). And this applies to my newly beloved Matt Campbell. We want to think that he loves Ames and will stay at Iowa State, but he has already shown that he was willing to bolt on Toledo after a one day conversation with our AD. It would be crazy not to give Bowden a contract extension. If it hasn't been done yet, it should be done tonight, while there is still one more day in the early signing period.

  23. This isn't in the holiday spirit, but I'm going to throw it down here and say that this Bowl Game was an absolute f'ing embarrassment for our school and program. Someone's head should roll for this. 50 to 3? He should have been fired at f'ing halftime. I know I will get replies that i'm "stupid" and "ridiculous" because some how we lucked into winning the MAC East. Really? That's all you got? Yes we had injuries, yes we had other problems but in the end Bowden had an undisciplined team and a starting QB who wasn't motivated enough to stay out of trouble to finish his season. I 100% support the players, but are they really going to be that upset with has-been Bowden leaving and being replaced with a young, energetic coach.

  24. I think every MAC schools gets to keep their bowl payout money. I believe the only caveat is if a MAC school qualifies for a "BCS bowl" or "New Years Day Bowl"...whatever it is called nowadays, then that money gets split up between the conference.

  25. Yes. No matter what he might have said it's incredibly low rent to take revenge by humiliating the other team's players. And then sowing discord by making that statement.

  26. Hmm. We elected someone who does the same thing and worse. The America we live in now. This childish behavior is rewarded now. And, yes, his son learned a nice lesson.

  27. Akron's focus on STEM and the recent accreditation of the Computer Information Systems program really play into this. There's actually been a demand for something like this on campus. And before I hear anybody saying that this isn't sports: If Poker can get primetime spots on ESPN, then eSports like League of Legends or Smash belong there too. They're more fun to watch, at any rate. eSports is far bigger both by audience size and by financial measures than sports like golf or tennis.

  29. IPFW beat Indiana by 20. Akron beat IPFW. Duke only beat Indiana by 10 when they were #1. Clearly Akron is better than Duke, right?

  30. These are the types of comments that jeopardize the future of football. If the concussion situation is not dealt with, football will remain in decline. Top athletes do not want their kids playing football, right now. After watching what happened to Zach Guises and Ryan Shazier, I am glad my own family member is done.
