There are certain steps you can't leapfrog on the road to becoming a great basketball team. The coach-speak statements of "trusting your teammates" and "making the right basketball play" are true. If you want to play hero-ball, you'll lose more often than not. Especially against a team that plays smarter than you. I saw a fair amount of hero-ball today, and not making the right basketball plays. These players are talented, but until they learn to play together we'll only be mediocre. We grew and improved over the course of last season with our ragamuffin 2017-18 team . I think we'll do the same this year. It's just a process...3 points

Not sure how Embick feels about Wake but I'd love to play them every year. Our people need to get with their people and get it done. Loved the Wake/UNC swing we did a number of years ago.3 points

As I watched the game it seemed to me coach Groce needs to address two things: 1) better shot selection on our 3's and, 2) better play out of the center. If we want to shoot 3's I don't have a problem if we don't force it and we get a good look at the basket. I thought Riak was going to be the answer for us in the paint, but today raised more questions than it answered. He looked lost at both ends. Poke is limited and Klac is still a work in progress. I hope Sayles responds to whatever coach Groce wants. He's looking like the post player with the best potential. This team is going to be good yet this season. They just need time.2 points

Well, the Women's Swimming and Diving team continue to dominate the MAC and more coming in to the big Zippy Invitational at Ocasek weekend after next, and they took Cleveland by storm again last weekend. The swimmers won their fourth straight Magnus Cup at Cleveland St. It still highlighted some individual class too. The team set 4 pool records, and 7 meet records, and the records they broke were previously held by some pretty well-known swimming schools. Astonishingly, the Zips won 15 races over the weekend. And yes Paulina Nogaj (spelled correctly here!) had a stellar weekend, as did Brooke Lamoureux, Paula Garcia, Sarah Watson, Sadie Fazekas and Avery Movold, and others I probably missed. Seriously, you want to see a Zip team that should give any Akron fan a grin of pride, come out to the Zippy Invite, even for a session or two, and you'll be amazed. And if you like Men's Basketball at he JAR, S & D even have their own "Chuck a Duck" contest with real water!1 point

Why do you feel like that considering we came within 3 points of knocking off a 16th ranked team? This team looks like a serious MAC contender from what I've seen so far. Illinois State was picked to finish 2nd in the MVC and Clemson returned 4 starters from a Sweet 16 team.1 point

I did not see the game. Darn work. Looks like a letdown game. I hope the players use this to fuel their hate fire for losing. March is what counts in college basketball and getting there is a process. There are a lot of things to build on and a lot to work on. I think the coaching staff will have the right messaging for the guys. So long as they buy in and trust the process they will be in a good place in March. OH, and fire Milwee.1 point

You act like we're in a bad place. This is year 2 of Groce, who inherited a roster that had 4-5 scholarship players, and we're already competing against the #16 team in the country and one of the best mid-majors in college basketball. We have growing to do, but I expect for us to challenge in the MAC this year. I honestly thought it would take Groce 3-4 years to get where we are now. IMO we're ahead of schedule.1 point

A lot of people are going to try to point at our 3-point shooting percentage and justify this loss by saying we won't shoot that bad again. We shot that bad because we took a lot of forced 3's. We needed to move the ball better to create ourselves better looks.1 point

2010, the year we won the National Championship. 9/3/10 Akron at UNC 9/5/10 Akron at WF 10/29/11 WF at Akron 10/15/13 WF at Akron 9/30/14 Akron at WF 9/22/15 WF at Akron I do not believe that UNC was ever interested in playing at Akron. Much respect for WF being willing to do so. I would love to start up a home and home series with them again, too.1 point

I'm pretty sure it was just to try to get him up to speed. That's how it looked.1 point

"As a Wake fan, I'd much rather play (and lose, if it comes to that) to an Akron that actually attempts to play technically than to get run over by an overly physical direct team [Stanford Cardinal]. I don't think there are two programs that have "technical soccer" more ingrained in their DNA than Wake and Akron. Suffice to say, I'm excited as well. Should be a great game." -quzybuk (WF fan)1 point

https://wakeforestsports.com/news/2018/11/18/mens-soccer-no-1-wake-forest-tops-colgate-in-ncaa-second-round.aspx Coach Bobby Muuss: "Akron has been to two of the last three College Cups. It's going to be a great college soccer match," Muuss added. "For a college soccer fan and for a soccer purist, these are two teams that like to play. We played them my first season and it was one of the best games I've been involved in since I've been here."1 point

#1. This is a separate topic #2. I think even though it's a different gender they are still playing the sport of basketball. (Even though the ball they use is smaller which is why they seem to make more free throws than men) #3. This forum is designated for both men's and women's hoops. #4. A shout out to a new coach who is rebuilding from nothing...is a good thing1 point

Looks like we are cluttering up the basketball thread with stuff that belongs in the other sports thread again?1 point

Z.I.P., I criticized Williams for this hire, but if she proves me wrong, which I hope she does, I will gladly acknowledge my mistake and give her all the credit for a fantastic rebuild. Best left her little and if she wins it's all on her. Mahalo.1 point

THis being our second game in 2 days you could see the guys going for the 3 ball because they could not penetrate. Some of the 3 balls were penetrate and dish but a lot of the 3 balls were just long shots without any passing. They are great when they fall but they were not falling today. We really do not have a dominating center and that hurts our inside game. Utomi can use his strength against Chicago State but against the bigger bodies he just drifts to the 3 line. It seems like most of his shots were from 3 pointers. I am some disappointed that Groce did not try to get the guys away from the 3 point shot. I thought that we were done with our reliance on the 3 pointer when KD left. I never thought we would see 40 3 pointers from this team because of our athleticism. This team needs to work on getting some easy shots. I can not understand why Groce prefers Klac to Sayles. Klac looks so slow on defense. Poke also does not look very good and you saw that we went small at the end of the game instead of bringing poke into the game. Hopefully, this type of competition will get us ready for MAC play.0 points

What an off-season we have coming up in NEO. The Browns, Cavs, and Akron will all be looking for coaches (I hope).0 points
