Today's ABJ content from GT- Zips-Penguins Scouting Report- https://www.beaconjournal.com/sports/20191121/college-basketball-akron-vs-ysu-scouting-report Review of Tom Hanks new Mr. Rogers movie- https://www.beaconjournal.com/entertainment/20191121/tom-hanks-makes-neighborhood-place-worth-visiting I feel much better informed about the movie than I do about the game.2 points

I think he's still working at figuring out what combinations work best together. I think what will be most telling is who the Zips have in the game at crunch time. That's when you will see who the real top five are. I think it's LCJ, Cheese, Banks, X and Reece are your crunch time 5.2 points

I just don't think we have the personnel on the OL to run the spread. Not sure RB is the big reason. Also ,not sure we have a QB with total ability to read the defense.I could be wrong ,just an observation.2 points

while I agree with you about the corner kicks being an issue both on defense and offense, I’m also frustrated that we didn’t have someone this season who “had a nose for the goal”. How many open chances were missed? How many scoring opportunities were not taken? I attended every game, home and away, and this was absolutely the most frustrating season I can recall as to going for goal. Our midfield and forwards have to do better. Being one dimensional (Egbo) was easy for teams to shut down. oh how I wish that Jesus Perez would have stuck it out at Akron rather than going to UIC. He could have helped Akron and Akron could have helped him.2 points

They gave up 12 sacks while the defense held Miami to 8 points less than their MAC average. I think both lines are awful, but the defense wasn't the primary issue when the O-line is a sieve like it was last night.2 points

I hate the way that USA Today focuses on the very top and very bottom of college football. They are catering to the least common denominator of readers. It would be so much more interesting to do articles on conference races, rivalries, local traditions, etc. But every day, it is the same thing. Who is #1 for the Heisman? Who will make the Playoff? How is Tua's fingernail or whatever is ailing him this week? I've come to hate national media. College football is so special because of the local interest it draws. But that can almost never be "news" in a national media outlet.2 points

I believe the home team can pick a side & Hoban doesn’t have a band. Last years state championship had a little more than 15k. I think less than 20k. I too pick Massillon, Trayunum could barely run last week & lasted 2 series & Clark is out.1 point

Not that I'm aware. I wish there were a few from Hoban, but there aren't. We wouldn't have stood much of a change in landing RB/S/LB Deamonte Trayanum or TE Caden Clark as they've had high-level P5 offers since their sophomore years. But I would have loved to have kept LB Devin Hightower (Michigan State) home. Hoban is going to be loaded next season so maybe we can keep a handful of them home. Like Melissa Jackson says, "Keep Akron in Akron." Some of the Hoban juniors we're going to want to give serious looks next year: LB Luke Bauer, 6-0, 232 LB Damon Ollison, 6-0, 215 CB Alvin Stallworth, 6-0, 190 DE Darryl Peterson, 6-3, 235 RB Victor Dawson, 6-0, 200 There might be others. Idk I believe the previous staff may have offered Massillon (former STVM) RB Terrance Keyes Jr. But Idk if the offer still stands. Like Trayanum and Clark from Hoban, we would have had no shot with Massillon junior WR Jaden Ballard who's already verballed to Ohio State & is probably the best hs WR I've ever seen. So smooth. But we're gonna want to offer Massillon's other big-play WR Andrew Wilson-Lamp (6-3). He's another top shelf talent. Massillon's QB, Aiden Longwell, is signed to play baseball at Kent State next year. St. Ed's has an OL named Ronan Chambers committed to Akron.1 point

I'm a little skeptical, mainly due to the same thing B & G and Alum said about the Hoban side..and I can't argue with the numbers that Massillon will bring. I just think the independent ticket-buyer attendance will be the determining factor, and the Northern Summit County independents may side more towards going to Byers and watching Mentor and St. Ed's. Plus, the numbers aren't the same, but Manchester, Aurora and Mogadore are all playing that night too. I'm saying 18,000.1 point

Outside of Cheese, who Groce seems to want to utilize as Manu Ginobili type 6th man, Banks is the only one who can consistently knock down an open jumper. He's not going anywhere. In fact, when we get into conference play and the bench shortens, I expect his minutes to go up.1 point

The entire list of RB's from the spring depth chart are either off the team or hurt. White, Alce, Floyd, Suggs, Sands (did not seem to recover from leg injury-injured , Reese (transfer-injured) all gone or not playing. We have one true freshman on scholarship at running back and he has not been too impressive (seems to lack a burst of speed - maybe tentative as he is young). The other backs on the roster are also true freshman walk on's or a D III transfer who is smaller than our back I had on my youth team. Recipe for a tough go concerning the running game for the Zips playing FBS football irrespective of any O-line discussion. On another note, we have also lost about 70% of the receivers on our spring depth chart for various reasons including injury. It's really no wonder why we are the worst offense in major college football.1 point

Yes, welcome. Looks like I am no longer the rookie (woot woot). I'll be at the game tonight watching Akron dismantle "little brother" my prediction is Akron by 20.1 point

Offensive lineman in the spead have to be able to block 1 on 1. I think the current line can do that ok for pass protection but when it comes to running the ball from the spread, the line has to be able to move bodies and that is where I see a deficit with our current line. It is tough to block a guy who's spinning, swimming, and bull rushing to get by you. Good lineman move their feet and hold (and don't get caught) every play. When I look at most of our current starters, they just do not move well. Not sure if its effort, scheme, or just a not in shape thing. The QB is definitely a critical position in the spread. QB has to make correct reads when throwing, handing off, or keeping the ball and running himself. Frankly, I do not see RB being the reason why we can't run the ball at all. I think its more QB, line, and scheme related. Sure, a good back would help but the holes are there or not. I can't imagine all our current backs not having the vision to see open space and run through it if it exists.1 point

Last night , Miami reminded me of Michigan State(dirty play). More than the obvious play of trying to tear Kato's leg off. ( What was the ref looking at?} They don't seem to be able to hear the whistle. Body slamming Nate and strutting away? More than PCCC, I want to see us bury the Red Hawks in the future!1 point

The Zips made the SportCenter Top 10 this morning. I captured a video on my iPhone but can't figure out how to convert the file from .MOV to .JPG. It won't play on Chrome, but will on Internet Explorer. http://www.ohiovalleysystem.com/img/IMG_0164_566.MOV The Top ten should be on YouTube in a couple days.1 point

The defensive unit as a whole did enough to win last night, but we still gave up 237 yards on the ground and 4.6 ypc. The defensive front 7 certainly is going to need to improve a ton this offseason. When you consider the fact we haven't had a pass rush all season, I don't feel our secondary has been that bad in coverage. Teams just run over us week after week.1 point

I'm going to the game tomorrow night. I'm looking for Massillon to win tomorrow night as Hoban is really banged up and Massillon has been clicking all season. (I really like Massillon's coach, btw. Nate Moore. Guy really knows what he's doing.) However, I'm predicting Hoban (if healthy, of course) to win another state championship next year. They're Ohio's new juggernaut. Anyway, to your question... I'm predicting a crowd falling somewhere between your #3 and #4 options. There's a big jump between #3 (less than 15,000) and #4 (a sell-out). I'll predict 20,000. Biggest hs crowd of the year in Ohio. A larger attendance than any of the state championship games. Btw, I'll predict 5,000 Hoban fans and 15,000 Massillon fans. (There's nothing to do in Massillon. Lol.)1 point

This thread is fun as I love this sort of thing, but I'd be surprised if we have any players on the list the coaching staff isn't already aware of and in contact with. Whether or not the staff will make them an official offer is another topic. The All-NEO-Inland District football teams were just released, so we could probably add quite a few names from that list to this list. The NEO-Inland D-1 Defensive POY was a kid from Medina I'd never heard of - DE Noah Nunn. I'm sure the coaching staff knows all about Noah & has already had a few in-person conversations with him. The NEO-Inland D-1 Offensive POY was RB Lameir Garrett from McKinley. I had earlier added him to the list. But there's no way the coaching staff doesn't know all about Lamier - I think he was 1st Team D-1 All-Ohio last year. But we only have so many scholarships to offer & we have to make the best use of the limited number.1 point

I'm not going to blame this loss on the officials, but l thought they did a terrible job last night. I do need to brush up on the rules. What is defensive holding on a run play?1 point

Gotta give Cross some credit this year as he has been playing well - he was a nice pickup on the d-line1 point

I agree that the O-line needs to improve, but many of those sacks are on Kato. He should have been able to see most of those blitzes coming. If your hot receiver is covered, you need to get rid of the ball.1 point

You're overthinking it. If somebody is open and has a good look they need to take the shot if it is within their role. Probably not going to see Reece firing up 3 pointers. Nor will you see LCJ trying to post up a defender.1 point

Just realized there's no game thread. I don't know about you guys, but I'll look back fondly on that one time we were tied in the 2nd quarter. Those were the days.1 point

Coaching errors in Q1: - Not giving the ball to Kato on 3rd and 1 on first posession - Not going for it on 4th and 1 on first posession - Calling a TO instead of taking a delay of game penalty on the 1 yard line.1 point

These forums are a real lifesaver for a long time Zips basketball fan like me who rarely gets to actually watch a game. First went to the JAR during the Huggins era and actually attended a Coleman Crawford basketball camp in the summer of ’92 (I think). I started reading these posts during the post-Dambrot coaching search and got hooked when I discovered there was a “Rec League Smith” appreciation thread. Finally got around to making a profile. Keep up the good work, everyone. I will be travelling on Thurs night but am interested to see how the Zips look against a regional rival.1 point

...He’s going to be valuable for the Dynamo. He’s contributed everywhere he’s been before. But today’s selection still feels like a blow to both player and, now, his former club. One month after their biggest loss on the field, the Timbers and Valentin suffered another defeat off of it.1 point

This may be old news, but it certainly seems pertinent considering this horrible season and the title of this thread. When Arth was named coach I hoped/expected he would bring some D1 coaching experience in with him. He failed miserably on that note. I reviewed the coaching staff bios today and found of the top 11 coaches named (including Arth) there is only a combined total (unofficial) of 16 years experience at the D1 (not FCS) level. And at best only 2 or 3 even played at the FBS level. No wonder they are struggling. Where are the at least 3 or 4 veteran guys that should have been hired? The AD should have insisted on a staff with more experience. Arth may very well turn this thing around, but all we know now for sure is we have a bunch of coaches whose only real success was at the D3 level with most of it at John Carroll and the Zips are in line to have their first winless season since 1942. Ugh.1 point
