On April 26, 2017, John Groce was hired as coach of the Zips. On the Zips Nation boards, both during the search and after, he had many detractors. People questioned his record and were especially brutal when the team struggled through the first year with just 5 returning players and only one who had played significant minutes the year before. Groce took that crew of leftovers, last minute recruits and walk-ons to a 15-17 record/6-12 in the MAC. Given time to recruit, he started to build "his" team and brought in guys like LCJ, Cheese and Banks, going 17-16/8-10 in the MAC last season. This season, he brought in yet more talent and took a team predicted to be 5th in the East to the best record in MAC. Today he was deservedly named MAC Coach of the Year. After being stripped to the studs, Akron basketball has returned to the top of the MAC last season.4 points

Yes, in fact the current reaction is a little late because experts were ringing the alarm to be careful and start getting prepared last year. Go read about the Spanish Flu of 1918. Then go listen to this interview with infectious disease expert. Like the fact that the economy nose dives in response to a pandemic and supply-chain economics means it's a problem with the economy, not with the experts or their opinions for how to deal with infectious disease. If the people in charge of this country (politicians) hadn't cut pandemic-response teams (whose job it is to spear head preventing this from happening/preventing the panic from happening) and actually listened to health officials when they make warnings years...even decades ago...that we need to be preparing for things like this; making changes to our supply chains etc... When Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico; the world faced a shortage of bags used for saline because 85% of them were produced there. And it's like no-one knew it wasn't going to happen either. Governments actually need to LISTEN to experts instead of playing politics.4 points

1.) I hate Rudy Gobert. If he hadn't become "Hoops Patient Zero," we'd at least have some college and pro basketball on TV for the next month. 2.) Since they're already at the arena, do Groce and Co. run out to the court and cut down the nets?4 points

Everyone has to see past themselves here. As fans, we're all pissed. I'll miss my first MAC tournament in 20 years. As @The Hip Zip said, there's things that are more important than basketball. While you or I may not be at risk, we could deliver this virus to someone for which it would be lethal. It isn't a sign of weakness, it's a sign of intelligence and sound reasoning based on science. If exponential infection is prevented, it may end in a lot of "I told you so" down the line, but that's still better than overwhelmed ICUs and rationing treatment (like what is happening in Italy). That being said, I REAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLY hope we at least see an NCAA tournament, even without fans. We have some great seniors, and I can't stand the thought of their careers ending this way.3 points

It's disappointing to see because this team had real potential to bring Akron their first tournament win in program history. Not saying cancelling wasn't the right call. It was just unfortunate timing.2 points

So I'm thinking there won't be a selection watch party in the JAR.2 points

We've also turned into a nation of dimwits, idiots and numbskulls that can't do simple things like wash their damn hands and cover themselves when they sneeze or cough.2 points

Those final two games against Ohio and PCCC will be a lasting memory for this team #119. So happy the guys got to cut down the nets and celebrate and had a sold out arena for their final game for the Zips. Incredibly sad.1 point

Sorry, but I don't share your confidence in the people making these "calls". IMHO they're not considering big picture. We're all complaining because we don't get to see our sports, but what about all of the lost jobs? Not just in sports but in everything that's being and will be affected? COVID 19 has a higher death rate than the flu they say. But, for 80%, they say it is merely a cold or less. How will death rates and sickness from global recession / depression compare? We all face risk everyday at home and when we step outside our homes. Is the current reaction really warranted for the risk?1 point

I'm so thankful YouTube TV automatically records sporting events for favorite teams and leagues. Seems like I'll be watching a lot of this season's Zips, Cavs, XFL and NHL games.1 point

Awful job by the NCAA in not providing the leadership to have a consistent response from the conferences and having this all come down to the last minute.1 point

Whatever the case, I hope this clears up and by the end of the school year they have a big party at the JAR for Coach Groce, LCJ, and the seniors. Think about all the players we know playing in Europe. They may be stranded and have no income coming in.1 point

Good call Let'sGoZips. I was going to just do one thread for the whole tourney, but given how this has come down an individual thread would be in order.1 point

We have turned into a wussy Nation Zips and many other mid major teams especially Dayton are about to get screwed. Andre Wesson at Ohio State is family. Sad way for him to end his career Its Over1 point

I hate all of this as much as anybody here but have come to the realization that some things are more important than basketball. Go Zips1 point

The coronavirus is much like American politics. Too many people at the ends of the spectrum, ignorantly disregarding the risk or downright panicking. Until it settles out, I will stick with the advice of the medical professionals, thanks.1 point
