Probably not where this belongs, but didn't think it was worth it's own thread. It looks like it's being discussed to bring back a bracket busters type tournament in mid-February. https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/news/the-bold-new-college-basketball-flex-scheduling-model-that-would-bring-big-nonconference-games-into-february/5 points

I miss LCJ. We had a few grad classes together; he put the student in athlete.2 points

Seems like no matter what it is, you can't please everyone. Don't f up the colors, keep whatever the come up with for a long time, and perform on the field and I'll be happy. That's whats most important.2 points

Oddly...I don't think you missed a ton. I think Irons looks good. He throws the ball on a rope. Our DL didn't give him much pressure, so it is tough to determine if his ball security bug-a-boos are in the past. I have to believe a P5 transfer, or a "Dalton Williams 2.0" will be brought in as insurance...or perhaps to start. If we had to rely on Jankowski for any stretch of time in 2022, I'm not too confident we beat anyone outside of Saint Francis. Maybe we could...but it would be a huge risk entering the season with him as our #2. For the most part the OL fended off the DL. It's to be expected with the Freshman becoming Sophs, and our DL running the aforementioned vanilla schemes. No one seemed to get hurt. That's a big plus! Cory Smigel gets game MVP. He may hit some FG's from 41 or even 42 yards this season? π No big, game-breaking runs. It does look like we'll be 4-deep in the backfield. No RB looked slow, or overmatched. I think the coolest thing was seeing the former players approach Coaches Ferri and Moorhead after the game and wish them well. Lots of warm hugs, smiles and well-wishes from the former players invited to show up. It was a great homecoming for those guys. I think the biggest concern going into the fall will be the DL. Not due to anything gleaned from the game...it's just the way it is. It was just fun to watch some Zips football amongst a "packed house." π2 points

I would assume if they were on scholarship at another D1 school, we would be placing them on scholarship as well. It seemed we were below the 85 scholarship limit before, but now probably sit at or above it. @LZIp is on top of that and Iβm anxious to see where things stand when heβs had time to fully updated.1 point

Generally athletic scholarships are renewed on a year by year basis. I guess Akron could do it differently, but whoever made that decision should probably be fired considering our financial situation as a university and the competitiveness of our teams We don't need to be pressured to keep players to avoid a financial burden.1 point

This is partially true. Im sure a come to Jesus mtg was or will be had with each player. The scholarship players will get help relocating to different schools. These coaches are all interconnected and they all talk.1 point

Well folks, I have taken a wait and see approach to all of this but the comments that jump off the page to me are the disrespect a lot of you have for walk ons. Most of you think the scholarship guys are the crap. Well I gotta tell ya there are some walk ons out there that IMO deserve a free ride like Hester He is just one example. Grimes another. I put Grimes up against any of those guys. So lets quit hating on walk ons. There are some more scholarship guys that need to go.1 point

Don't hold me to this, but I'm told it's a simple A or UA. I'm imagining taking the new Vanderbilt V logo and turning it upside down.1 point

Thought on all these walk ons being shown the door: I don't know what our roster size was last year or will be this year (nor do I really care), but it looks like you can have a max of 125 players. No matter what we had in total, the fact is we had an excess number of walk ons on the team in recent years as a result of being well under the scholarship limit. With the new scholarship annual limit moving up to 32 in our situation and not really a mass exodus of scholarship players after the JoeMo signing (thus allowing us to be at the 85 total limit), someone has to go and it makes sense to cut the lowest performing walk ons.1 point

I am always skeptical of new logos. It feels like almost every sports team Iβve ever seen change logos ends up embarrassing themselves with something overly flashy or silly. Iβll wear the gear, but Iβm definitely nervous.1 point

i am not interested in loosing walk-ons. I want the coaching staff to shed the scholarship players who are not D1 or FBS talent. This will open up additional transfer opportunities and allow the staff to recruit the full 25 man class this year.1 point

Really like the idea of this just like I did the Bracketbusters, especially like the guaranteed home game part1 point

Could you imagine being the intern responsible for updating the 2022 portal? What a thankless, horrible job.1 point

Same. I feel like I am overly critical and nit-picky when it comes to rebranding. I just hope it isn't something amateurish and actually looks like a top notch D1 school logo. I tend to get an idea of an ideal rebrand in my head and set the bar too high. There's a level of jealously there too. It would be a dream project to rebrand my alma mater or favorite sports team. Which is exactly what happened when the Cleveland Guardians were announced. Luckily their new logos have grown on me and I'm sure eventually a new Akron logo would too. Having said that, I own nothing that has the script Akron on it and never will.1 point

Heck, the Supreme Court has a leak! Something as important as the Zips' new logo can't beheld under wraps!1 point

And during our first year back, IIRC. What an epic curveball thrown at Sabo while trying to build a team from scratch.1 point

I was planning on going - and really looking forward to going - with friends and family but I'm staying home instead. Akron Akrons...1 point

I just keep thinking about the last time Guthrie and Miller rebranded a school. It ended up looking like this...0 points
