I spoke with Jared recently. Chong is conditioning and rehabbing, but will see no playing time or practice this Spring. He will continue on his return program and will be ready for the Fall. He may not get much playing prep in the summer depending on his progress. He took one hell or a cheap shot and it will take time to recover. Wish him all the best. He can be a key part of the Zips return to the final four. We will see.
I am none of the above but have some information:
Additions - Carter Cormier, Jackson Hebert, Alejandro Varela and Rui Reis (both Keiser University)
Subtractions - Santiago Frias, Conor Lee, Jak Higginbotham
Graduated - Kingsford, Kauzlaric, Portman,
Below is the order I believe the 2023 recruiting classes (including portal players) should be ranked. To be honest, there is such little separation between the top 8 teams they could be ranked in a number of different ways. Ball State and Bowling Green are close to each other but have a bit of a drop off from the top 8. Kent State is next. Northern Illinois easily holds down the last spot in my opinion.
1) Eastern Michigan
2) Buffalo
3) Toledo
4) Miami
5) Akron
6) Western Michigan
7) Ohio
8) Central Michigan
9) Ball State
10) Bowling Green
11) Kent State
12) Northern Illinois
I’m sure more portal players will be added at some point. We landed a handful in April last year (including Thompson, Whigan, and George). Bowling Green moved their spring practice up to get a better idea of who will transfer out and try to get ahead of the portal window.
It will be interesting to see how the Zips respond after the loss on Tuesday. They didn't play badly, they just did not play well enough to beat a Toledo team that seems to always shoot well at the JAR. I would like to see Groce do what he did in the Kent game, have a set play go to Freeman or X that will result in an easy shot to get the lid off the basket. Against Toledo we had another slow start and it helped cost us the game.
The Bobcats have a couple of freshmen that impressed me, AJ Brown and Elmore James (who played at Brush).
I suspect Boals won't leave Wilson on an island guarding Enrique tonight again. Wilson is a very nice player, but his lack of lateral quickness hurts him on the defensive end.
Depends on how the HC wants everything set up. In general, one of the coaches is assigned “Recruiting Coordinator” and he assigns territory for each coach to recruit. Position coaches will still have a part in recruiting someone at their position no matter what territory. The Director of Recruiting has a wide range of responsibilities from watching film, coordinating visits and camps, making sure contact is being made with recruits, etc. A number of teams also hire a Director of On-Campus recruiting.
Typically position coaches have the ability to offer scholarships to whoever they wish, but in the end the HC will have the final say of who the priority targets are.
As LeBron continues his inexorable march toward the all time NBA scoring record, I read this article about his first game. An oral history of the first 12 minutes of LeBron James’ NBA debut - https://andscape.com/features/it-took-just-12-minutes-for-lebron-james-to-put-the-nba-on-notice/ Romeo was quoted a number of times with the title of freshman, University of Akron. While LeBron will always be associated with the University, it was his teammates Romeo and Dru that started all of the recent basketball success. So while LeBron is deservedly going to get a ton of accolades when he breaks the record I wanted to acknowledge his two teammates who started the run to put us where we are today. Thank you guys.
