  1. Nice to see the Beacon do an article before the game. The zips need a big crowd on Friday night https://www.beaconjournal.com/story/sports/college/zips/2026/09/24/akron-mens-soccer-georgetown-nationally-ranked-ncaa-teams-robert-morris/91899785007/ "We have done a really good job of getting some key wins.," Embick said. "Obviously, in [the Big East] conference, we didn't start well with only one point [with a 0-0 draw against Butler on Friday, Sept. 18]. Now you gotta face Georgetown. I think Friday night is a huge game for us. We gotta get something out of that. We gotta get momentum in the Big East. Non-conference, we have been excellent. We gotta bring that to conference play. "... We gotta show them [Georgetown] what Akron's about. Give them a nice rude welcoming to town. We can't make it easy on them. That's the [AK-]Rowdies. That's the fans. That's the community. We gotta make this a fortress on Friday."

  2. I'm not sure what the point of a press conference is if you're not gonna ask about a QB injury.

  5. When there's no independent press at the presser and the person asking the questions is obviously a UA employee it's really no difference than a casual friendly PR type interview.

  6. Kind of nice not to see the Zips mentioned anywhere in the Bottom 10, but one of our former conference members has taken over the #1 spot. That move to the Mountain West really looks like it was a good move for NIU. 🙄 I did find this funny though. Sacramento St has been included and had this about their matchup with UMAss (who is also nowhere near the Bottom 10). The Sacks host the Artists Formerly Known as UMess, our preseason top Bottom 10 team that is now 3-0. It's a conference matchup, despite the schools being 2,940 miles apart. Imagine, a Mid-American Conference game in which the teams' only chance to see middle America is if they have a window seat on the plane.

  7. QB: Auburn transfer Jackson Arnold is a dual threat with the ball in his hands. He’s thrown for 601 yards and two touchdowns, and has run for 132 yards and 3 touchdowns. Arnold has yet to throw an interception, but he has fumbled three times. Interestingly, when Arnold does throw the ball, he has actual been better when being blitzed than when he has not. He’s completed almost 67% of his passes against the blitz compared to 56% when not blitzed. That said, Arnold has been known to hang on to the ball too long and take the sack instead. RB: Senior Jai’Den Thomas is the leading rusher with 224 yards and one touchdown. 166 of those yards have come after contact. He also has 7 receptions for 52 yards. WR: Oregon State transfer Taz Reddicks leads the team in receiving yardage with 120 yards on 8 receptions. Sophomore Kayden McGee is next with 103 yards and a touchdown on 5 receptions. UNLV spreads the ball around a good bit despite who is listed as a starters. TE: Arizona transfer Keyan Burnett is the main option at tight end with 7 receptions for 75 yards, though the Rebels will rotate several players at the position. OL: The offensive line has allowed 11 sacks, with 10 of those coming to Memphis and North Texas. LT - Alekai Afoa - 6’4 295 (Jr.) (JUCO) LG - Colton Thomasson - 6’8 325 (R.Jr.) (Baylor) C - Griffin Scroggs - 6’3 330 (R. Sr.) (App State) RG - Amare Taase - 6’4 330 (R. So.) RT - Jackson Brown - 6’6 310 (R. Jr.) (Pittsburgh) DL: Redshirt freshman Kal-El Togafau starts at one edge with sophomore Andre Porter on the opposite side. The duo has combined for 10 total tackles and 2 sacks. Junior Lucas Conti is an interior starter that will also be slid outside. Redshirt freshman Eliah Logo typically lines up at nose tackle. LB: Holy Cross transfer Cam Santee and former Arizona transfer Kamuela Ka’Aihue start at linebacker, and have combined for 35 total tackles. DB: Seniors Denver Harris and Quandarious Keyes start at cornerback. Former UCONN transfer Mumu Bin-Wahad starts at nickleback, with senior Jake Pope and sophomore Tre Fulton at the safeties. Opposing offenses have targeted Keyes twice as much as any other player in the secondary. ST: Junior Ramon Villela has gone 2 for 3 on field goals and 6 for 6 on extra points. Kennesaw State transfer Matt Choules averages 43 yards per punt, with a long of 64 yards and 7 punts downed inside the twenty. Keys on Offense: Get the ball out quickly, don’t cause unnecessary setbacks, and attempt to establish the run game. The Rebel defense has talent, but has steadily become worse at tackling as the season has progressed - according to PFF. Keys on Defense: UNLV wants to run the ball and will utilize their quarterback, running backs, and wide outs in their ground game. If the Rebels get ahead, it may be hard to recover. Akron has to stay focused on their keys as UNLV will use some type of shift or motion on almost every play pre-snap. Final Thoughts: I wouldn’t go as far to say the Zips are the better team, but it is certainly a winnable game. Despite the Rebels playing poorly at times, they still have a talented roster. The Zips will need to play well to give themselves an opportunity to beat a team that looked primed to be one of the best in the G6, during the off-season.

  8. I came here to post the same. It seems like @Captain Kangaroo has a job waiting for him in the marketing department. https://x.com/AkronZips/status/2103242625906278424 Edit: The QR code on the back of the shirt is fitting for today's version of college athletics. Honestly I don't mind a QR code on the back as much as the sponsors that are normally on them. At least it's different.

  9. This is why I didn’t like shrinking the OOC. It didn’t remove the naia games but just removed the good games.

  11. I don't disagree. I feel it's comparable how many over react when their first time long-term relationship ended. Dambrot gave Akron prolonged success that we hadn't seen in basketball up to that point in perhaps ever. Groce came in built off that success. I feel Akron fans now see the program is in a place where it's bigger than just 1 coach and they have faith Ford will continue the success. Personally, I was bummed when Dambrot left. The main resentment I had towards the situation wasn't so much directed towards Dambrot, but more so towards the complainers who were just Dambrot fans who masqueraded as Zips fans.

  15. To further drive home the point of how many shots the Zips had tonight, here's an excerpt from the GoZips.com recap: Akron put up a whopping 35 shots on the Colonials compared to just four for the visitors — the most in a match since November 29, 2015 when they had 40 against SMU.

  17. It is my understanding that UA does not collect more revenue from out-of-state students. It's just that out-of-state students have to pay what would otherwise be subsidized by the state for in-state students. That is, the revenue per student is the same, regardless of their state of origin.

  18. YOY My understanding is the population of ohio is in decline and there are fewer kids going to college. It captures both volume and share of students. Ohio students should be primary. They also need to attract out of state students because of increased tuition costs.

  19. Yesterday I was on campus and did my usual rounds. For what it's worth: The renovation of Buchtel Commons is beautiful. The landscaping and pathway create a welcoming space all along the way. The entrance and arch leading to Buchtel Hall are impressive. On the other side Coleman Commons is a sight to behold. With the fountains now working it makes for a scenic place to take a walk. Fall enrollment appears to be up at an impressive double digits. Grad students are flat, but freshmen and transfers are up. Nemer's plan to get all deans and dept heads out to the high schools with our message seem to be working. Last year the football team had 11 of their athletes make their summer strength & conditioning goals. This year 51 have met their goals. Football GPA is at 2.94, the highest it has been in recent times. Those attending the first meeting of the football team described Joe as being the most positive and motivated he has ever been. His enthusiasm was infectious for all in the room. Soccer is loaded. There has been a slight setback with an incoming GK getting injured and possibly losing a season. The defense got the outside backs they needed. Goodrich has gone to bat for the soccer program adding Attila as a full time coach with a focus on operations and Bill as a GM with a focus on development. Andrew has said the soccer program will be the pre-eminent program at UA and he will not let it slip. Goodrich is highly thought of by the faculty. His door is open and he is transparent in all he does. Administrators feel we will go bowling. W's come from RMU, EMU, CMU, KSU, Mass and UB with the possibility of stealing one from WMU or OU. Some coaches feel UNLV is the best OOC team we play. They feel we will not sneak up on Wake or Minn. Crain's Cleveland Business ran an article yesterday citing UA as one of the best schools in the country (9th) for sports' achievement versus dollars spent. Go Zips!
