I want to consistently be competing for MAC Championships. Dambrot consistently achieved that so you won't find a single post in this forum of me calling for his job. Akron plays in arguably the worst division in all of FBS yet Bowden has managed to only lead the Zips to the title game once in 7 years (yes, I'm already penciling in Buffalo to make it this year). Trying to compare what Bowden achieved, which isn't much, to the success Dambrot had is a disservice to the basketball program that went to 9 MACC in a 11 year span. If Bowden achieved that level of success, I'd be asking for him to get a statue.

Hakeem Butler would be a nice pickup, but I'm personally hoping they address the O-line.

Nearly 2 out of every 3 FBS teams (61.5%) make bowl games now. Making a bowl game use to be the benchmark of a good season, but now even 5-7 teams make bowl appearances.

Buffalo Defense Stats (MAC Rank) 1st in scoring defense 1st in yards against 1st in turnovers forced T-2 in sacks Buffalo Offense Stats (MAC Rank) 5th in passing ypg 4th rushing ypg 5th in total offense 4th in scoring They appear to be a complete team and if anything it's actually their defense carrying them.

What's pathetic is being content with a program that consistently finishes ~.500 with no signs of ever improving. We lost to Toledo twice last year by a combined 44 points and you're trying to say the talent gap between us and the top of the MAC isn't much? NIU, BGSU, and WMU all had runs of being a top tier G5 program. We have the best facilities in the entire MAC and are located in a recruiting hot bed. Why can't that be us? I'm not here complaining about the win. I'm glad to see the win regardless of score. My complaint is with his full body of work (35-47 overall, 23-29 in MAC). He's the second longest tenured coach in the MAC and every player on the roster he played a part in recruiting. Him inheriting a 1-11 program can no longer be an excuse.

Word it however you want, but we've only had 1 winning season in Bowden's 1st 6 years. You find that acceptable?

fearless forecast: we will score a defensive touchdown

One has to think a lot of that blame has to go on the offensive line as well. The Zips are also sacked on 7.19% of all drop backs, which ranks them 79th in country.

He's likely on the low end for D1 coaches in pay, but still probably a decent amount more than he was making at the preparatory school. The chances of him having success when he has 1/2 the number of scholarships and a fraction of the recruiting budget of everyone else is slim. I don't see him being able to do well enough with the odds stacked this against him to get attention elsewhere. On the plus side for him nobody is going to fault a start-up program with only a handful of scholarships for being bad. This should give him pretty good job security for a number of years.

We narrowly escaped a 1-7 Kent State team. I'd certainly hope we wouldn't take any game for granted.

Duquesne Basketball Coach Keith Dambrot
kreed5120 replied to Valpo Zip's topic in Off Topic, Smack & Jokes
Preseason poll has Duquesne finishing 11th in A10. -
Personally, I'm all for it. College basketball has kind of turned into a joke with all these 1 and dones and Adidas paying players to attend certain schools. Hopefully this helps return college basketball to being an actual amateur sport played by real student athletes. http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/25015812/g-league-offer-professional-path-elite-prospects-not-wanting-go-one-done-route-ncaa

Nebraska doesn't want to refund the 85k fans that paid to see Nebraska & Akron play.

Mounds has done a great job, but I'm not a fan of not allowing a new coach to pick his staff.

There were more teams. I excluded teams like WV, who I don't think we have much chance against and excluded teams like Appalachian State who are currently 4-1 so likely would have no incentive to play the game. If we're 5-6, I honestly hope Bowden would be fired at that point. I honestly don't think a 12th game will get played.
-
Does anyone even have a list of teams available that week? Another FCS opponent won't do us any good as you can only count 1 win per year against them. That limits us to 128 FBS schools. Of those, how many haven't exceeded the 12 game limit (13 for Hawaii or any team that played at Hawaii)? Of those how many do we have a punchers chance against? Below are the select few that I could think of. There might be some that I'm missing. - Marshall - Southern Miss - East Carolina - Wyoming - UNLV

We still have 3 games left against current 1-6 teams so there is a strong likelihood we backdoor ourselves into a 6-6 season

Stark State to build at Perkins & Route 8

If this makes it easier for students to knock out some gen ed credits at a lower cost, I'm all for it. -
A huge part of coaching in college athletics is recruiting. If you want to blame the lack of talent on the team that's on the coaches for not recruiting better players.

Will Bowden get a contract extension?
kreed5120 replied to Hilltopper's topic in Akron Zips Football
We're 2-2 and 0-1 against the MAC. I think we have different definitions of good. Off to another mediocre season, I would agree. -

Sure, I agree this loss appears to have changed some peoples opinions. It feels odd being on the side of popular opinion in regards to this issue. -

He inherited a 1-11 team 7 years ago. That's a lifetime ago in sports. He's now the 2nd longest tenured coach in the MAC. That shouldn't be used as an excuse any longer for the cycle of mediocrity we find ourselves in. We should be in a position to compete for MAC Championships by now. No getting smoked by Toledo last year on national TV doesn't in my mind count as competing. I have been critical of Bowden on this forum, but I am very appreciative that he brought us out of that cycle of being bottom feeders. I just have no faith he can lead us to being top contenders in the MAC, which is what I aspire the program to be. This program just reeks of stagnation.
