UA slashes tuition this summer for freshmen
MDZip replied to pat's topic in General UA & Campus Discussion
This might answer both sides of the question. Stay Out of School - Amid skyrocketing tuition costs and dismal job prospects, Aasif Mandvi imparts a healthy fear of higher education in a group of at risk young people. -

Huh, wondered what the hang time on that one was going to be? OSU President Gee to "retire". Hope they don't look to the north for their new president. -

And E. Gordon Gee-Whiz srikes again. Taking shots at Notre Dame, the SEC and Louisville. After all OSU has been through lately this complete embarassment of a president who continues to shove his foot in his mouth has to be at the very least uncomfortable for OSU. Would you rather have him or Proenza as your school president right now? And thank you Yahoo sports for using a picture that had Jim Tressel in the background. -
And you can add this one: A WCC athlete had to pay back $20 for washing her car with water not freely available to other students. Somebody put a bullet in this organization.

As well as they did last year and having most of the team back, they are quite likely to be MAC East Champs again. Unfortunately, CMU who dominated the Zips in both games has their entire team core back, so I suspect they will be MAC favorites. Love what the women have done but I think it is an awfully tall order to knock CMU off their perch this coming year.
-
Fortunately our favorite rivals also made that list for a similarly dubious achievement. 36. (Years since Can't State had consecutive winning seasons): The Golden Flashes went 11-3 last season and won the MAC East Division title. They'll try to have consecutive winning seasons for the first time since 1976-77.

The Men did their part in Track winning the MAC championship. The women finished 2nd but sadly behind only Can't State so the series is tied 7-7. Only a miracle by the Zips baseball team can pull it out this year. I hate losing anything to Can't. They need to reestablish a mens soccer team.

For those that think Proenza is highly overpaid, here is CNN's list of the highest paid Public University Presidents. The Top Ten (Ball State? Really?) Graham B. Spanier* Pennsylvania State University $2,906,271 Jay Gogue Auburn University $2,542,865 E. Gordon Gee Ohio State University $1,899,420 Alan G. Merten George Mason University $1,869,369 Jo Ann M. Machen University of Florida $834,562 Francisco G. Cigarroa University of Texas $815,833 -
Also really unfortunate the Zips are not in it.

Yeah, "The Bad Asses".

According the the MAC web site there were 7 MAC players drafted. Interesting that none came from the MAC champs and every MAC East school except the Zips was represented. I knew the East was better. 1st Round: OT Eric Fisher, Central Michigan (No. 1 overall), Kansas City Chiefs 3rd Round: OL Brian Winters, Can't State (No. 72 overall), New York Jets 5th Round: DL Steven Means, Buffalo (No. 147 overall), Tampa Bay Buccaneers 6th Round: DT Chris Jones, Bowling Green (No. 198 overall), Houston Texans 7th Round: OL Eric Herman, Ohio (No. 225 overall), New York Giants 7th Round: QB Zac Dysert, Miami (No. 234 overall), Denver Broncos 7th Round: RB Michael Cox, UMass (No. 253 overall), New York Giants

I think it's great that the MAC had a #1 pick. Of course I do find this part of his bio on NFL.com funny and telling: Hmm, now why would that be? Because he didn't end up at Alabama? The bias is amazing at times Was nice to see this in the AP story though.

Yeah but what the hell happened at Miam? Roberts and Harris averaged over 25 minutes a game, McGhee over 12 and Tadlock played in 17 games even though he didn't get a lot of minutes, but Miami touted him because he was on the all-MAC academic team. Something must have gone really wrong other than just a bad season. Edit: Not as dire as I thought, Saw this on the RedHawks board "McGhee and Roberts will graduate in May and could have an additional year of scholarship. Tadlock will move to a program where he believes he can find more p/t. It appears that Jon Harris is leaving on his own --- probably based upon the roster turnover. No other players have been confirmed." Suspect it will be a few years before the RedHawks challenge the Zips again.

“That’s a big deal for us,” Dambrot said. “He’s probably one of the top two or three players in our conference.” Of all the words of tongue or pen, the saddest are "it might have been". Trying hard not to think how a full season with all of our players might have turned out. (sigh)

What? That may have been true earlier in his career, but I think if you really watched him closely his senior you would see the joy he gets out of playing the game now. I think his self awareness is a huge plus and I think he will put in the work and some team will see enough to take him i the draft. Even if his ceiling was a career backup center (and I'm not sure anybody, including him knows what that ceiling is since he really hasn't played the game that long), that's not a bad life. He represents the University well. Go Zeke!

And as an added bonus, if you checked the women's roster, Akron recruit Hannah Scipio is listed.
-
Can we count it if Zeke doesn't get drafted by the NBA but gets picked up as a tight end by the NFL?

Speaking of that Don Banks of SI.com just projected Central Michigan OT Eric Fisher as the Number 1 pick in the upcoming NFL draft. Wonder what the highest MAC pick in history is? Edit: Good point MD. Though it might be better to discuss over at the football forum, and keep this thread Zeke related.

Will Zeke be Drafted by an NBA Team?
MDZip replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Athletic seven footers are a rarity even in the NBA. He gets drafted. -
I find that pretty cool, here are two high level players that battled each other for four years (even if not mano a mano) and each won two titles in their time. I will have no problem at all seeing Cooper dish a few dimes into Zeke. That would be awesome.

Impressive just from resurrecting an 8 year old single post thread. Geezing for a moment, but our rec centers back in the day were when they opened up Memorial Hall and the Rubber Bowl to play intramural sports or sneak over to Can't to play racquetball. UA has come a long way (and needed it to compete against other schools in that list like OSU and Cincinnati). It does annoy me when they refer to UA in articles like this as a "smaller" MAC school. What the hell does that mean? I think they simply mean less well known since I believe UA has the fourth biggest student enrollment in the state. Still good to see UA mentioned in something like this though.

Funny, short, satirical piece on Frank Solich.

I don't know who Chris Driver is but he is apparently advocating (I'm sure tongue in cheek) for a MAC-Sun Belt football challenge.
