  1. Think he meant Rossi. Rizzo was an offensive lineman.
  2. Actually, according to the GoZips game statistics, the Zips had nine tackles for losses totaling 42 yards (including 3 sacks) so I'd call that a pretty good performance but it certainly did appear that JMU controlled the LOS. It was giving up all the big plays that really hurt (of course JMU could probably say the same thing). And a little shout out to Jawon Chisholm for passing the 2,000 yard career rushing mark in the game. If he continues to run north and south he has a shot at a 4,000 yard career (with the added bonus of some nice receiving yards - that's one reason I think he stays in games too, he is a good receiver - huge catch in the JMU game).
  3. The names of the officiating crew were published on GoZips.com: Referee: Greg Blum Umpire: Ed Feaster Head Linesman: Chris Garner Line Judge: Jeff Meslow Back Judge: Reginald Berry Field Judge: John Masterson Side Judge: Grady Smith Have not found a way to find if they have any conference affiliation.
  4. JMU is a lot better than some people gave them credit for. The top of FCS and bottom of FBS aren't that far apart. Yeah a little luck but the offense played pretty well and a win is a win and those have been damn hard to come by. JMU is no slouch but it does make me happy to shut up all their fans that claimed they should win "easily" (and that we didn't pay them $300K to come and beat us at our house). JZ84, close prediction.
  5. Two more FBS - FCS upset alerts (not involving the Zips). Portland St. up on Cal 30-27 and Richmond over NC State 21-10. Western Michigan down 14-0 to Nicholls St but its early.
  6. Actually they beat Virginia Tech but that's probably irrelevant now. My blood pressure has gone down again, so its basically who wins the second half. Gotta give the Zips some credit for sucking it up and coming back. March and Caponi playing well, Hirschman has made the most of his opportunity, Pohl looked really jittery. C'mon Zips can't afford to drop this one.
  7. Actually though they look pretty good on TV.
  8. Outstanding save, but I'm still partial to the one he made in the NCAA championship.
  9. If this program is going to take a step forward this year, this is more than a must win - but it's not a guaranteed win, which is why it is important. When Morgan State showed up last year I don't think anyone was that worried about them, they have been a down FCS team for quite a while. JMU is a different challenge and one the Zips should welcome. A challenge but one they must be able to meet to keep moving forward. A victory by a touchdown or less would not be a victory, these boys need to show they are playing with a fire and need to put this team away by more than the pont spread, otherwise the confidence level won't be there for the games after Michigan. C'mon Zips I am not expecting 66-6, but how about a nice 38 -17 score? I'd be satisfied with that.
  10. This line kind of stood out - Ohio State is one of three basketball programs outfitted by James' Nike line, along with Kentucky and Miami. (sigh)
  11. Don't get the logic behind that one. So we play EMU and Ball St. twice and eveyone else in the West once? I liked the old format of East for five, West for six and East for five more. Maybe it because the division winners are no longer guaranteed the 1 and 2 spots so they thought more crossover games were needed? And we get Buffalo twice in five games? Not a fan but it won't likely make a lot of difference.
  12. NIU upsets Iowa in Iowa.
  13. Tough break for Buffalo. Down by only ten and recovered an OSU fumble at the Buckeye one that was called back on a penalty. Probably was the turning point of the game. Pretty good weekend for the MAC, either a win (Can't State, BGSU, Ball St) or hanging tough against good teams (Toldeo, WMU, Buffalo) except UMass and Akron. Makes me a little more nervous for the rest of the season.
  14. #12 on that list, Towson, is the one that dismantled Connecticut. And #32, Liberty, gave the Flashes fits. The Zips better take this one seriously.
  15. McAdams certainly displayed some of that last year against NIU when he scored 20 and was 4-4 from 3. I just wanted to post something positive away from the football thread (sigh).
  16. Really? 3rd and 1 and we hand the ball off 4 yards deep?
  17. And a little lucky - fumbles the ball then is able to get it back and throw for a touchdown. Unbelievable. That'll show up on SC Top Ten.
  18. Appreciate the drops by UCF or we'd really be in trouble.
  19. Nice stop by the defense and then I was thinking of that exact scenario - dammit!!!
  20. Still early, not giving up hope on this game yet and certainly not the season. UCF has a good team.
  21. What did Bowden say about what needed to happen? Don't give up big plays and don't turn the ball over. Two series, one big play given up and almost a turnover. Oy. Pohl has had a nice start.
  22. At this point even - go Flashes! OK, sorry, got carried away.
  23. Some "whining" from Steve Spurrier about the SEC unbalanced scheduling. Don't ask me why the SEC released its 2014 schedule just days before the 2013 season, but that's exactly what happened Wednesday. And here's all you need to know: Florida plays both Alabama and LSU in 2014 and Georgia and South Carolina play neither. As one Gator fan emailed me Wednesday: "How is this even remotely fair?" Answer: It's not. In fact, it's a travesty and makes you realize that Steve Spurrier was right last year when he proposed a new way for the SEC to choose division champs. Spurrier said back in the spring of 2012 that the SEC should pick its division champions based on division record instead of overall conference record. I agree, for any conference that is split into divisions, the only fair way to determine a division champion is your record in that division. Your record against the other division should only be used for tiebreaking purposes. Of course in conferences like the MAC, who have an uneven number of teams, it becomes more complicated so I would suggest the following: East division teams play 6 games in division and two crossover games, while the West plays 5 division and three crossover games. This can be accomplished by using a nine week conference schedule where every team has one bye week (for the purposes of simplicity I drew up a schedule where each East team is off for one of the nine weeks and three west teams are off on the other two, because you have to have an odd number for every week but other combinations would work too). This would also allow teams to schedule a non conference game later in the season if they'd like on their off-conference week. Only division games would count for the division championship, the cross division games would only be used as a tie-breaking criteria.
  24. Maybe he donated all of it to Imani Davis (but only needed when he is being used as a punt returner). And this kind of stuff in an official release also drives me a little crazy - "Williams’s arm was complimented by sophomore running back Jawon Chisholm’s ..". Really, Chisholm was remarking how much he liked Williams arm? I know it's only a football release but come on, we're supposed to be a institution of higher learning, couldn't we at least get someone in the English department to look these over before they're (or should I have said their) released? Jupy2, do you work in the English department? Can you find someone?
  25. That is odd, what happened to our Aussie punter? And our primary PR is listed as Imani Davis 6-0, 282!?! Disappointed not to see Bickley as a PR. Think he would be fun to watch. Anybody remember Dino Hall? Also happy to see the Hudson kid, Osborne, win the RT spot. And where is CJ Mizell?
