From Top Drawer soccer today: Loved the picture of the Zips celebrating with the Rowdies and the "Domination" headline. Writeup is here, but it's pretty short so I just copied it here: An emphatic 4-0 win over previous #2 Tulsa punctuated the #1 status the Akron Zips continued to enjoy in our Men's Tournament 48 National Ranking. Caleb Porter's Zips remained perfect after the win, with the team remaining unbeaten, untied and unscored upon. Observer will now have to contemplate just how good this team can be over the course of the season, as the squad will need to look to itself for motivation and challenges through the regular season, starting with a midweek game at Ohio State. By the way, I was surprised to learn that Tulsa only has about 4200 students. We had a bigger crowd than they have students.

I had the same thought, I'm just not too lazy to do it myself. I didn't count MAC games. Most surprising to me is how few non-BCS games there are. That may be one of the MAC's big problems, we really aren't playing like competition. Most of the BCS games are against the Big Ten which probably has to do mostly with geography and travel. I've said before, I'd take one payday game, one FCS game (since you're not going to get a payday team to come here) and then two games against whoever (BCS or non-BCS) we can get to do a home-home series. If it is a BCS team. it is likely they are not going to be a top team so then it would be like competition. I'd be fine with a schedule like that.

Dr.Z., you starting to come around, man? Hey how awesome would it be to set the NCAA record shutout streak with a victory at OSU? I'd still be happy with the win but that would really be icing on the cake.

Yes, but this line from the first one was pretty amusing: Several times I counted at least 16 Akron players on the field, including 3 number 11's from Jamaica.

Just booked my flight too (Southwest has some nice deals going on right now), I think the Zips chances are good, but if not I'm coming out a day early and leaving a couple days late to give myself a nice vacation anyway even if they don't make it.

Don't know about that one - think I'd go Freebird, so EMU gets that one.

I thought you just wrote those last two sentences as a joke so I went to go see what they really wrote. Un-freaking believable, what an ignorant comment. Oh, did Kyle Martino write it? And 14 of the top 25 NSCAA ranked school are BCS schools. I get very tired of the eliitist attitude that exists with that set of schools. Most are exactly the same as Akron in quality.

In most polls, they are #2 including the NSCAA and Top Drawer Soccer so this is effectively a matchup of #1 vs. #2 (again). Where the hell is College (Soccer) Gameday on ESPN for this? Tulsa has a good squad, including a couple of very good forwards in Austin Neil and Ashley McInnes who are their leading scorers. Their schedule has not been really tough so far (Seattle, Lipscomb, Western Illinois, SIU-Edwardsville and St. Louis and none of those teams are ranked) and they have Missouri State this evening. So I don't think they've been tested too much yet, but they still have a good team. They have been scored on in three of those five games so at worst I expect to have a 2-1 victory. Go Zips!

Those should be swapped at the very least. A few interesting things I noticed in the current MAC standings. Only two 0-3 teams (us and EMU, great). Toledo has beaten both WMU and Ohio to start off the MAC standings at 2-0. Temple is 3-0 (and beat CMU) and actually got a few "Others Receiving Votes" in both the coaches poll and writers poll. They take on Penn State this weekend so we'll get to see how far they've come. The Zips may be a lost cause this year but I'd like the rest of the MAC to make some kind of a showing this year. Wouldn't mind seeing Temple get ranked (at least until we play them). The MAC may be bad but if at least a couple teams rise above the rest, it is probably better for the conference as a whole as opposed to a 5-3 division "winner". At least until we can rise up again.

The biggest surprise to me is Ampai rated #1. I think he is a very good player, but there was some discussion about the level of his game being elevated last year because of Gavin and Zemanski. I'd have no problem at all if he was our second straight Hermann winner.

Ttile IX is federal law. You're not getting out of that one unless you don't wish to accept any more federal funding. That includes grants.

To add insult to injury, anyone know how much we padi GW to come in and do that? I'm assuming this was a buy game.

I think the guys suck it up a little after their embarrassment last week. They won't win but they won't look completely pathetic. 38-14.

Maryland. Gut wrenching loss to them in the 2005 quarterfinals. I'd like to see the rematch now.

Makes no sense. If he isn't going to play at WR, he could actually be an all-MAC talent back at safety. Wonder if we'll see him heading back there soon?

And that's what we have to look forward to with the football team right now. "They are what we thought they were." At least for those of us that enjoy the soccer team, it is still great. Hopefully football comes back someday sooner than later. (sigh)

A bigger question there might be would Villanova want the MAC. No chance. If they have an invite from a conference they are already in that is a BCS conference why would they make the same investments they'd have to make for the Big East to join the worst (or at best second worst) conference in the FCS?

At least we didn't have the worst loss to an FCS team today. Virginia Tech fell to James Madison 21-16.

Outstanding - welcome to 0-4 with a legitimate shot at 0-12. On the bright side we might be #1 (on the ESPN Bottom 10 list). I hate when "wait til next year" comes this early.
