  1. Public enemy # 1 to Akron is.....Akron. I've lived in both Columbus and Cleveland. The ONLY place I've ever been harassed for wearing my Akron jersey was at the BW-3 on Exchange St. while watching the Akron-Penn State Football game.
  2. I predict Tressel's presence is going to do nothing but help the University. Don't worry too much about the negative comments people are saying on ESPN, national blogs, etc. Those people don't even know where Akron is. Most everyone I've spoken with is saying it's a brilliant hire; a win-win scenario. The University of Akron is big enough to contain Bowden, Tressel, Porter, Dambrot, Faust, Proenza and everyone else. Getting our school to a bigger and brighter future is going to require a team effort. Are you guys in? p.s. to those of you on here who think Jim's presence is a bad influence for students, I just want to say that one of my most inspirational professors was a guy who made some bad choices and because of those choices, he could no longer work in his profession. But he got a second chance and was able to reinvent himself. And the students of Akron are the beneficiaries of his kindness and dedication.
  3. Thanks for posting!! I still want to slap Eli's stupid face (Charger fan here) but I'll surely be rooting for Chase. He reps the Zips with a lot of heart. You gotta love it.
  4. I like #1 and #3....leaning toward #1. I think #2 looked great, but I thought the vocal cadence was a little off.
  5. That's almost funny. Almost.
  6. This is most interesting........
  7. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oral_Roberts I had a vision of a 900 foot kangaroo who guaranteed a Zips victory.
  8. If this is indeed true...and I trust that it is...we should erase Ianello from Akron history just like they used to do in Egypt with their unpopular pharoahs. Scrape that last name right off the freaking stone wall.
  9. Agree that place looked really really nice yesterday...was surprised! It manages to have good intimacy and a big time look to it. I was daydreaming just how loud we Zips fans could be in a place like that. Good for EMU. Now if they only got their cool "Hurons" name back I could respect them.
  10. At Rutgers and Seton Hall. Winable games in the nations biggest sports market.
  11. The Monsters are getting good support. The Dan Gilbert factor plus association with a good franchise (Colorado) has made a big difference. Believe me, the fan experience is now a world above the Barons and Jacks.
  12. I hate that curtain. I really hope it doesn't come to that.
  13. Love the article. I am digging this attention!!! Thanks for posting.
  14. Agree I have grown to really appreciate Brinda. I'm almost certain he's been drinking on the job, which gives him instant street cred in my book. Then again, after following CLE sports, can you blame him!! Kiley and Booms are great. I like Rizzo too. Then again, I'd go crazy listening to any show every single day. Overall I like both stations. Regardless, I think it's absolutely crucial that UA invite every NEO sports station to have a meaningful presence at the games. Keep us on the radar as much as possible.
  15. Good idea. Gotta give credit when it's due!!
  16. After his football career is over, Blackburn plans to become a math teacher and possibly a coach, too (if he does both, it will be in high school — if he just coaches, it will be in college). DONT TEACH MATH BRO!!!!!! Read more: http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/giants/givi...L#ixzz1j4AfXQWw
  17. Well, I sure enjoyed the MAC games. Especially in comparison to last night.... WHICH SUCKED. I don't care if those were the two best teams, boring is boring. We need a freaking playoff asap.
  18. I'd prefer have an intimate, b-ball only place. But there is a tremendous upside to a more visible, more vibrant location. Think Arena District in Columbus. Still, I'd like to imagine there's some kind of design available that could somehow satisfy all interests. I would not be happy at all to end up with the Akron version of CSU Convo Center- much too sterile. We need something special.
  19. Couldn't disagree more (@ Big Zip). Here's why. Akron articles WILL come IF they are deserved. Now being positive, there is no reason not to think that we won't be trending upward. We should be a vastly different program in a few seasons time. Now there's a time to be emotional, and a time to be logical. As of today, we are arguably THE WORST team in football. In stark contrast, right now Ohio State has, by far, much more readership interest in both Akron AND Cleveland. This includes a vast number of casual fans who are interested in "big time" football. Given time and success that is surely ahead for us, I believe Akron can and will win over this large segment of football fans. Under the guise of a Bucks article, those casual fans just got a thourough and GLOWING background on Terry Bowden, the "Architect of the Akron Zips." Our coach was introduced in the most positive light imaginable. The faithful here are already amped on the future. But we die hards are still a minority, that is the perception and the reality. Our continued success is going to depend on reaching out to the undecided masses and literally winning them over to our side. The print media isn't dead (yet) it is still very much an integral part of the process.
  20. Akron's new architect, Terry Bowden, certain that Urban Meyer will win fast at Ohio State: Bill Livingston Published: Thursday, January 05, 2012, 2:10 AM By Bill Livingston, The Plain Dealer The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Terry Bowden, the master rebuilder, said he never had a "get out of jail free" card. His Auburn players already possessed everything they needed a generation ago to overcome NCAA probation and the loss of hope it can foster. "There was a lot of pride and hunger in the older players, who remembered the teams of the 1980s, when Auburn produced NFL players and was in the top five in the country year after year," said Bowden, the new coach at Akron, of the 1993 Auburn Tigers. In 1991, Auburn had a 5-6 record. In 1992, the Tigers were 5-5-1. The team began the 1993 season on NCAA probation because of boosters' violations under the administration of coach Pat Dye. The Tigers were ineligible for a bowl bid or for the Southeastern Conference championship. Bowden was in his first season as coach. The Tigers went 11-0 and finished fourth in the country. They remain the top example of coping with probation. cont. here http://www.cleveland.com/livingston/index...._terry_bow.html
  21. If you don't know, Coach Amato is from Easton PA. Separted by the narrow Delaware River, the Easton PA/Philipsburg NJ rivalry is one of the greatest in America, it goes for over a century!
  22. Yeah thanks for helping clear that up, it's funny how the memory gets clouded ha ha.
  23. Ah, perhaps my favorite Zips football memory outside, of course, of the MAC Championship game -vs- Northrn Illinois. I don't even remember the name of 14th-ranked Virginia Tech's All-American DE that JT completely out-classed. I also remember the crowd erupting when Willie Spencer threw a last-minute TD to bring the Zips to within 10 (IIRC). Even though the Zips still had no chance of actually winning the game, the pride & tangible sense of community in the Rubber Bowl that night was epic. That was a great football game. Has a Zip defense EVER played better? I believe the Va Tech DE was Cornell Brown. B&G, my memory is that we were down by around ten (more than one score) when Spencer hit the TD pass on the very last play of the game. I think we might have even went for two and converted (even though there was no time for any onside kick), making the final deficit 2 points? I seem to remember (with no time left) we scored on a ridiculous series of laterals to apparently win. Except there we a flag on us... I'm senile though. Anyone else remember that?
  24. Family on Three.... What a class act. Very glad to have known him in class. Truly a friendly and genuine cat. And it's been so fun rooting for him this whole time. Getting to see him make plays on the big stage for all these years was a real blessing. Congrats on a great career, you are the greatest Zip ever. Don't be a stranger Jason!!!
  25. Hey Tank, Hope you stick around. Your insights are much appreciated....welcome to the forum!!
