Game 31—@WMU [MAC Tourney Rnd 1]
Captain Kangaroo replied to GoZips88's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
To turn a game with analogies of Cherbundi and VCU into a win is beyond amazing. What a phenomenal gutsy performance. -

I say it hits 22-0 before we score? Too late to start a poll? -
Still awaiting Skip's response to this one....

Duquesne Basketball Coach Keith Dambrot
Captain Kangaroo replied to Valpo Zip's topic in Off Topic, Smack & Jokes
Another one in the "L" column for the Dukes. To paraphrase David Lee Roth - Where have all the cupcakes gone? -
I'll be there, and with a couple game-beers in my belly for the first time in a while (thanks to you, noon and 2 pm start times). I'll be as obnoxious and loud as possible, and we'll see if it helps. It would be great for the Zips to pull out this win. They've battled their asses off for the past month. That hard work has to pay off sometime. No better time than tonight against Kent!

Thanks to you all for the nice comments. I'm glad you liked the story. It was a lot of work, but certainly worth it if people thought it was informative. If always been of the mindset that I can complain about the local Zips coverage, or do it myself. I made the time to create it because I thought is was an important story to be told. I also felt if it were a professional, well-received piece that we'd get the opportunity to do other such stories in the future. Thanks to Dr. Z for handling the layout!

”Who are these guys?!” was the question I kept asking myself regarding The University of Akron’s 2018 Football Recruiting Class. The local newspapers gave Akron’s February 7th, 2018 National Signing Day virtually no print space. Northeast Ohio television stations all but ignored the event. And the various internet recruiting websites again focused their columns on the Power 5 programs. Aside from the noble efforts of a couple local AM radio sports talk personalities, the Zips signing day coverage fell well short of what a real fan wanted to learn about the class, and certainly beneath the coverage it merited. 2018 has a chance to be a great year for Zips football, and the kids bound to these 25 letters of intent have some really interesting storylines. So I thought I would head down to the Zips football offices and see if Head Coach Terry Bowden would give me a little time to discuss the class. Here’s what he had to say. You sure they weren't talking about the basketball team?

Chuck said he needs something to do in his retirement, so I've offered him the position of Senior ZipsNation Sideline Correspondent. And, at triple my ZipsNation.org salary. Awaiting his reply.

Yep...that one is of a greater magnitude than the Gribben promotion.

I was on campus last week and had the chance to speak to Coach Bowden. I asked him about the addition of Marcus to the staff and here's what he had to say: "Because the local recruiting is so important to the success of our program, when running backs coach Eric Hickson left for Kansas State our goal was to fill the vacancy with a local guy. That guy is Marcus Wattley. Marcus went to Copley High School, played for The University of Akron, coached at Copley, and was then an assistant to Dan Boarman at St V for 9 years before becoming their head coach. He fit perfectly our goal of getting an outstanding, high character coach that knows the local community. Now that we’re a winning program, we have to do the best possible job of recruiting the local kids. Kids from St V come from all over the area, so I think Marcus’ hire really strengthens our position to best recruit northeast Ohio. Marcus has a lot of knowledge on the defensive side of the ball, so we’ll have him working with our defensive linemen and outside linebackers. I think we have about 8 guys on scholarship from St V, so obviously we’ve known Marcus for a long time." Trent Boykin will assume the duties of running back coach. A running back himself at YSU in the early 90's, he held that position for his first three years at Akron. Also - Kory Gribben was moved up from a grad assistant position to become the H-back coach. Congrats to Kory! Nobody noteworthy is leaving the Zips program or transferring out.

The Zips defense gets a bit of a boost this fall with the return of DL Devonte Jest, LB James King and Andy Jean Baptiste (6' 4" 270 lb DL). All three were at Hutchinson JC last season. Release

The Dukes lose again, this time 73-67 to St Bonaventure. That's 9 of their last 12 in the "L" column. Hope "Keith" took it easy on their elderly announcer tonight. -

Agreed. I'm tired of sweating out every XP kick, let alone the 28 yard FG's.
