So... Wasn't able to watch any of this game live. Can anyone explain why Virshon played only four minutes (I think)? Fouls? Doghouse? I hope the kid can make a presence more often on the floor, because he can make his presence felt (so to speak!) -- he has ball and shooting skills we don't have from a freshman very often. We need him around for four years!

Well, damn! Now I HAVE to watch the ESPN3 replay!! They DO show the commercials don't they?
-
I bet if you look at our comparative scores for the final five minutes of the first half in MAC play, we trail by an average of 5 points (for 5 minutes) per game. Why do we have so much trouble finishing the half??
-
According to the box score, it was Cotton.
-
What the Hell just happened with 1.4 second to play. We were inbounding...and...they stole the inbounds pass???
-
Officiating crew is about as bad -- BOTH WAYS as they can be! Fantom fouls...What was the floor violation on BSU a bit ago -- double dribble?? Crazy. It's all about THEM!
-
So, going back...What was Coach's "The Hawk" comment, Joe Akron??
-
You may be both too young AND geographically mislocated to know it, but Ken ("the Hawk") Harrelson was the subject of the most celebrated trade of my youth involving the Cleveland Indians. In 1969 the perennial fight-to-avoid-last-place tribe traded for slugger Harrelson from the Red Sox and the press heralded it as the beginning of the new renaissance which would actually have to wait another 25 or so years. Harrelson hit about 30 HRs his first season for an improved but still subpar team (after initially refusing the trade and briefly "retiring"). Then he broke his leg the next pre-season and barely played at all. Finally, the following season the Hawk retired for good -- with the pretense of joining the PGA golf tour! Never hit a shot there, but his legend -- and ego will live on forever in the minds of long-time (and suffering) Indians fans..

Sorry, I missed it...and I think he's too young to remember Ken Harrelson! Shrug

Parrish! 21 points, 9 rebounds!

Can't explain my joy to see the Zips sign their first student-athlete from Humboldt Nation! McKinleyville had produced many good players over the years. Bryce was offered out of HS by Iowa St, committed to Nevada then decommitted and went JC way to a good program at RiversideCC. He's a guard primarily.

What former Zip player would Groce recruit?
Z.I.P. replied to 1981 grad's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Okay, two can play THIS game!!! I'll see you Ricky Brown, and raise you John Britton! Actually, Britton probably still holds the school record for shot attempt. Averaged over 20ppg, but the same # of shots! lol No Captain, we're NOT talking about D Tarver here! -
Top Drawer Soccer now has caught up to Zipnation with an article titled: "Akron Men's Soccer Land a Trio of VerbalsAkron picked up three offensive-minded midfielders, adding depth to its strong recruiting class of 2018 & 2019." However, it is restricted to paying customers!

...Which brings back one of my fondest memories of my times supporting Zips athletics -- which you long-time board members will no doubt recall. On the basketball team's arrival at their Waikiki hotel in 1990, I was sitting in SID Mac Yates' room when I overheard the shout of the then Zippy performer to the cheerleading coach, "Okay...I got Zippy's head. What'd you do with the tail?" Half of Zippy remained in the Cheerleading office at the JAR. Lovely free trip to Hawai'i, but the children of the Aloha State were hard to console! We still await Zippy's full arrival on our shores.

Doesn't say which side of the football or positions he's going to take on coaching. Is there a vacancy? Could he be an OC?
-
For those of you who saw it, how does this game compare to the Dayton triple-OT game from the 90's?
-
When I was watching practice here in Hawai'i I thought I heard Coach Groce call number 0 "LeBron". But it may have just been Jimond. Not sure which one I was watching today! #ForgetBonzi

Another interesting fact about the video: These are three of the four St Vincent-St Mary's players to have their numbers retired by the HS. The OTHER is today celebrating the 30th anniversary of his most famous moment! Bill Rafter made it famous with his words: "Send it in Jerome!" http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/25/sports/ncaabasketball/call-by-espn-broadcaster-bill-raftery-on-dunk-by-jerome-lane-still-reverberates.html

And BTW -- the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame announced its new class today. I looked and was amazed: How in the world isn't Joe Jakubick in the hall? He's in the Czech-AM BB hall of Fame!

Well the three "new names" confirms what I have heard from a source on campus over the holidays! There are still a couple of additions remaining that I had heard about -- two players coming from Portugal... I suspect the team was trying to add them before Spring practice, which would mean they are enrolled for Spring semester. I had heard that coach Coppinger was overseas recruiting. He's the GK coach, so I wonder if he recruits (field players) also...?

Re: Officiating. I didn't watch it real close, but it seemed like -- especially the first half -- they were calling offensive fouls like never before. Can't remember that number of not just charges - but also moving screens called, on both teams. Did it seem unusual to you? Any way, other than watching a replay to find out the #s?

I love that Zak tweeted that he and LeBron are the only number one draft picks in Akron's history! That's the kind of history people might not be aware of -- and sure doesn't hurt his credibility in his position with the media! I would love to hear him call a game! Wonder who the play-by-play guy is for SSFC. I remember hearing the almost over-done British accent on the PA announcer at QWest/Century Link and now I wonder if their TV voice is a Brit too... Not that there's anything wrong with that.
-
There's a statement on coach Groce's Twitter account.
-
I would really like to know -- is this the unluckiest team in America, that all our opponents get hot when the Zips step onto the floor, or are we just that bad a perimeter defensive team? In past seasons, Akron was near the top in defensive 3-point percentage. Now we must be near the bottom.

Who is CBS Sports Net breaking in as the scoreboard operator for this?? They need to hire someone with some experience, because the score always seems to be either not changing after baskets, or changing out of nowhere!
