Wayne State vs. Winston-Salem live on ESPN3
Zipgrad01 replied to InTheZone's topic in Akron Zips Football
You can't translate how guys will work out at different levels. Lee Owens did nothing here and he is running a very successful program at the D2 level. While Winters has done a great job turning around Wayne State, I have no idea how he will translate into a D1 coaching job. -
Exactly. As much as I love MJ's résumé, if he doesn't want to be here, I don't want him here. We need an Akron guy. Is that Winters? Maybe. We don't need an Akron guy. No Akron guy has been a winner here. We need "THE GUY" to turn around the program. I don't care where he is from.

Is Our Head Coach "Search" a Sham?
Zipgrad01 replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football
Recruiting is an obvious downfall. Recruiting season is almost over and we will have spent over a month doing nothing when we should be rounding out a class. We can't afford to just let this class be half assed. That will be 2 out of 3 years of filling out a recruiting class with a bunch of no namers that had no other options than us. -

Congrats to coach Winters. Whether he ends up as Akron's coach or not, he has done an amazing job turning that program around. -
I don't see keeping our 3 or 4 commits as a major priority. And I don't see Ianello dropping from HC to Recruiting Coordinator. Beyond that, I can't see a new HC wanting the old HC on his staff. Unless we get Charlie Weiss. Supposedly we have 9 verbals. I see what u r saying but I would probably do this if the new coach was ok with it rather than paying him for nothing.

Good heavens, you mean the guy could actually still be lurking on campus somewhere?! Ughhh. Hey, I'm fine with Gerry Faust still around...he's a great guy and people love talking with him. But sweet mercy, Ianello?? We need to offer up some job suggestions of where UA could "place" him to work off that $300K per year. I'm thinking picking up cigarette butts at some remote satellite branch. WORSE CASE SCENARIO....we could always make him the recruiting coordinator. It might help keep our current commits and the guy is good at that when he can focus his time on doing so.

False. Coaching is just like playing. The cream of the crop rises up through the higher ranks. There is a reason guys like Les Miles, Jim Tressel, Nick Saban, etc...are where they are. The same thing goes for NCAA coaches moving up to the NFL and failing. Every level is different and you can't always predict success at one level to the next. Thank you. This is what I have been saying all along. I think for the most part, coaches that are buried in obscurity are there for a reason...nobody wants them. And college coaching is a pretty tight fraternity. Guys that are doing a great job tend to get noticed, and get frequent offers for better opportunities. So once again....if Winters has been pursued at any higher level.....even a I-AA school....I'd like to know about it. Winters is black and has that working against him at the D1 level. Historicly, black coaches have had a difficult time getting HC opportuunities in DI. That does not mean just because Winters is balck that he is being overlooked...but the simple facts are that he probably has had fewer opportunities Here is a question for you. How many black HCs are there in D1 and how many have been considered for the open positions over the last 3 years?? Bullshit. I dont want to hear the race card crap.

Let's see... Tressel played at Baldwin-Wallace, coached at D2 Akron, before moving on to D1 Miami, Syracuse and Ohio State then back down to 1AA at Youngstown State then back up to 1A and Ohio State. If anyone has worked himself up it has been Jim. This alone debunks your theory on moving up. Kelly at Notre Dame is another strong example. Miles played at Michigan, worked in private business for 5 years then went back to Michigan as a GA. He later coached at Colorado, back to Michigan, then to Oklahoma State, to the NFL with the Cowboys, back to Oklahoma State and then to LSU. Miles is a silver spoon guy who had big names blocking for him, but who has also done a great job everywhere he has been. Saban is the son of a Coaching Legend and the key protege to Bill Billichek, played at Can't State, coached at Syracuse, West Virginia, Ohio State, Navy, Michigan State, Houston Oilers, Toledo, Cleveland Browns, Michigan State, LSU, Miami Dolphins, and Alabama. Not sure I follow your logic - can you please elaborate? Really? What did you say that debunks anything that I said? Typically a good coach makes a progression through the ranks. The guys you all mentioned made progressions in a particular capacity to become the coaches that they are. Paul Winters has done what?.....D1 coordinator, D2 coach for 8 or so years and......what?

I like what I am seeing, but watching this game reveals how big of a jump it is from a D2 school to a D1A. This looks like a glorified D1 high school game. We should be happy the Zips didn't play either team this year. Sadly, I think you're right. Come on...don't be crazy. ha, you really never know. We were getting blown out by the worst teams in FBS at the end of the year. I think that was more of the players showing the university administrators that they had given up and wanted a change. Those teams aren't THAT much more talented.

I would take #1....he is pretty good.

The interest throughout the state is astonishing. I was on a few OSU boards seeing if any of their insiders knew anything and I was amazed at the number of OSU fans that were following this story and hoping it was true. A lot of people wish this was really happening for the good of Tressel, UA and college football in general. I wonder if Tressel or his people are paying attention to the buzz that this is causing all over the Buckeye state.
-
Espn 850 now saying sources at UA say Tressel is not coming. It was fun while it lasted.
-
Canton Repository just posted that they spoke with Tressel's people and that he has been at his home all day in columbus and that he is not taking a coaching job at Akron.
-
How many goosebumps will you have if we lose to two bcs teams next year and our ooc foe, in say the first three weeks of the season next year? Short term, Faust sold tickets for UofA. Short term, Tressel will sell tickets. Long term? How fast will people turn on Tressel if the team goes 3-9 next year? I would still support him. 3-9 is a definite improvement over 1-11 and 0-11. And I would expect an improvement in the number of wins in subsequent seasons as well. The losses would be a short term problem. High school kids in Ohio will beat down the doors to play for Tressel no matter where he goes. Akron would probably get every 2nd level Ohio player that didnt verbal to OSU or maybe Michigan.
-
That is as creative as we can be on 3rd and 4th down? Pathetic.

I wish they would protest to the athletic director and tell him they wont take the field until he is fired.I don't. The university can't swallow his salary, and this would make very negative national news. I wish i Coach would just resign...not gonna happen though.Negative national news? You mean like 2-19?If we cant swallow his salary we shouldnt have a football team. The program might as well fold if you keep this guy around another year or 2. Make a choice.

This is just sad. I have never seen a more pathetic team.
-
This is just embarrassing to watch this on national television. 2 touchdowns where a guy isnt even covered, a drive where they just run it down our throat and a coach that punts on an opponents 35 when we are down 14-0. How can we not fire this f'ing idiot?

No. A 5 yard catch, with a 20YAC, looks like a "deep" 25 yard completion if you rely on the box score. Yes, I know it was a rhetorical question. A damn good one. You guys got me. Nothing gets by you two. The really interesting thing is how they were able to exclude the YAC in last year's figures but bt are unable to do it this year. Team TY........13.1 Team LY.........10.7 So PN7 had YPC of 10.7 last year and Moore's #s include YAC. If we make the adjustment suggested by CK (80% of yards are YAC. 5 yard pass and 20 yard run) would mean Moore is averaging only 2.6. I am not sure what impact the receivers have on the statistic...we all know they could not run routes and could not catch last year. Let's just ignore that for this analysis. So...in conclusion... PN7 wins with a 10.7 yards per completion vs Moore's 2.6. Looks like you win this one. Damn!!!!! Moore underthrows almost everything over 20 yards. His deep ball is horrible. I cant count how many times he has bounced a ball to a wide open receiver or allows the db to make a play on a ball that should be a sure completion. I agree with CK...stats may say one thing, but watching the game shows me that his arm is sub-par.
