I absolutely love the managing partner's excuse.... He attributes the mess to the high volume of business that day. ''It was such a busy day, and it was such a large credit-card batch, that it got stuck in the processing.'' The next time I screw up I am going to use this excuse. It doesn't matter if it doesn't apply to my screw up, it will still be just as believable as it was in this case. Absolutely love it.

The first part of your last line is OK, but to have street cred you should have followed: "What we NEED is athletes." with That be the missin piece of the puzzle.

I know everyone wishes for these kinds of scenarios to take place. I think we do it because we have no other options. We can't wish for the veteran players to extend their eligibility any longer, and this year presented us with a number of significant losses at the same time. It's like the Cavs fans who are trying to justify that they are better off now without LeBron because some rookie with no experience must surely be coming in that will dominate the NBA. They do it because they have no other options on which to rest their hopes. I wish I could line up all the posts I've seen in the last few years that talked about how Sweich was going to come in as a freshman and become our answer to our losses in the post. Losing Dru as our all time assist leader wasn't a big deal either, because Steward was an incoming freshman. And where was our season headed last year if we had done what some of you suggested, and handed the reigns of our backcourt over to Alex, instead of returning heavily to the senior leadership of Steve and Darryl? I've said it many times. In college basketball, counting on incoming freshmen to fill the shoes of these kinds of players is VERY wishful. If you want to play the more dependable odds, you'll want to tell me how much we're going to improve this year because there will be significant further development from guys who have already seen a college basketball floor. I see Skip's point too. Let's make it a 140 bus accidents.

I'd be half-way to dying a satisfied Zips' fan. I've always wanted to see the basketball team make the Sweet 16 and the football team crack the Top 25. (No football jokes, please ) WHOA!! No kidding. Dissappointed if we don't make the Sweet 16? GoZips...love the optimism. But, can you show me at least one basketball expert who is willing to say that the Number 6 team in the MAC last year, that lost 4 pretty key players to graduation, is going to emerge as one of the Top 16 teams in the country? I don't believe there is a college basketball expert who wouldn't agree that if at least 70 of the D1 basketball teams that are better than the Zips get wiped out by bus accident, disease, or some other mayhem, that the Zips have a reasonable shot at a sweet 16 run in the tournament. Such an outcome is unlikely, but is a possibility.

Has anyone heard the rumor that Ohio State may hire James as its next head football coach?

Zips Football Recruiting Poll
Zipmeister replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
I voted Aug 1 - Aug 15. Gird your loins for some knock your socks off commits during this time span. (P.S. girding your loins rarely is a successful way to prevent your socks from being knocked off) -
I know exactly who Lebed is. He is a scam artist, and the NIA has been promoting his pump and dump schemes for a while now. That said, much of their rhetoric(this video included) is very realistic. Furthermore, your claim that gold and silver will "burst in the next 4-5 years" is..well...odd. I think you're confusing Lebed's money making schemes with the overall precious metals market. Lebed's "pump and dump" schemes will take much less than 4-5 years to "burst". Meanwhile, the precious metals market will probably keep rising(with some hiccups) as long as central banks keep devaluing currencies. But thanks for pointing out to people that the NIA is NOT a group that people should be considering. The message this video sends, however, is very real. I think you have hit the nail on the head. It's that damn Mexican Central Bank and its insidious plot for world domination via its annual peso devaluation scheme that is the real problem.

Akron September opponent's coach in hot water?
Zipmeister replied to Dr Z's topic in Off Topic, Smack & Jokes
There is some argument as to which vest Tressel will be wearing to work this fall. all-time classic! +2 -
the amount of international students we have, we could do very well at it... Back in the 70s, the Buchtelite regularly included coverage of the table tennis team, including match results against BIG name schools across the country and injury reports, until it was discovered a couple of guys were just making the stuff up and sending the reports to the editor. Did you get in big trouble? Sadly, I was not one of the culprits, but I admire them.

Interesting Poll - Part III

NOBODY scored more than Andy Vadnay back in the 60s. He was a chick magnet. -

men's and women's table tennis.

I would have to go with Mike Foy.

One problem with Len Paul. Games sometimes had to be interupted to get him down from a rebound as his belt would become entangled on the little loops on the rim that hold the net in place.

Potential College Football Scandal
Zipmeister replied to Dave in Green's topic in Off Topic, Smack & Jokes
I have said it before, and I will probably say it again. One of the toughest things about being a division I basketball or football coach is convincing young men who don't belong in college to come to theirs. It's probably easier when a tattoo parlor operator or car dealership will help out. -
2010 Akron Recruit Nick Harney

2010 Akron Recruit Nick Harney
Zipmeister replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Basketball Recruiting
Wow Go! You sure can tell a lot about a guy from just looking at his physique. What physique attribute tipped you off that learning the system would be a challenge for Nick? Let's see. I'm six foot tall and in decent shape for a man of my age. Nick is standing next to me and we are talking about his basketball interests. I can see that Nick is very tall, six-seven, and has a rather muscular body as opposed to the baby fat build of Dakota Euton. Just an observation, mind you. Note the nifty photo Cap'n K[/b} posted at the start of this thread. Nick has the build of a young man, not the build of gawky teenager. I would need be blind to not notice the excellent condition Nick was in. What tipped me off? I'd say that Nick's muscular build that was not honed at McDonald's tipped me off. Plus, I had the benefit of asking Nick several pointed questions about his basketball interests. His responses quickly indicated that he has a personal plan to achieve his goals. And, my questions included ones about his school work and career. I apologize if my post sounded negative regarding Nick learning KD's system. It was not intended that way. Frankly, I think Nick will have no problem learning the "system" and will quickly get a sizeable amount of playing time. As for staying healthy, Nick faces the same challenges all the other players have regarding injuries. What I stated was intended as a positive remark leading to recognizing that Nick Harney will quickly become of the Zip's new, highly regarded players. That help? Yes. I think what you are saying is you had a brain fart when you commented on his learning ability and proneness to injury. -

You know that is a smack in the face of a Kansas football player somewhere. You are probably correct on this G-man, but I think this is because Kansas football players just take their college basketball too seriously rather than any bad intentions on the part of the Capt.

That can't be... we don't compete against them for recruits. Unfortunately, you are correct.

Can't State sues Geno Ford for $1.2 million
Zipmeister replied to Hilltopper's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Parties involved in contracts do not set legal precedent. Judges do that when they decide cases and case law is established. Hey, I watch Law & Order. You can't tell me anything I don't know about the legal system. I said that Kennedy's comments to Pluto suggest a legal precedent may have been involved. That is, no one in the past chose to dispute similar contract buyout agreements between Can't and its coaches. If their attorneys thought legal precedent favored them, they would have been foolish to throw away hundreds of thousands of dollars in buyout money that they weren't legally obligated to pay. Of course it's possible that there are differences this time around that could swing things the other way. We long-range observers can only guess at details to which we don't have access. I only note from the information available to date that, whether or not technical legal precedent was involved, actual precedent is that previous contractual buyout situations at Can't all went in their favor without having to go to court. In the absence of further information, I give the advantage to Can't this time around. I missed the Law and Order episode where they distinguished technical legal precedent from nontechnical legal precedent, and actual precedent from nonactual precedent. I also missed the one where they explained that legal precedent only applies when one of the parties to the present suit was also a party to the precedent setting suit. Specifically, I did not realize that Ken+ couldn't use the outcome of a similar case involving any university and contract breaching coach as precedent. I have got to start watching that show. -
Sorry. I have to tell you you're wrong. According to Real Time RPI, despite having several more losses than us, Miami had an almost identical RPI. Why? Because they had a 55 SOS vs. our 180 SOS. I know this is yet another attempt by someone on this board to try to prove that a strong SOS doesn't make a difference, but the facts in Miami's case sure show otherwise. And if they scheduled more home games and got a few more wins from it instead of destroying their winning percentage, they would have had an even higher RPI. You mean....like Akron did? The difference in RPI between the two of us was 0.0015 Your original post is just bizarre. Miami's scheduling did not drag down the conference RPI. Would you rather have an RPI of 130 with 23 wins or an RPI of 130 with 16 wins and a losing record? And Miami's record did hurt the MAC. It gave the other teams in the conference one or two games against a team with a mediocre record instead of a good one. The feedback drags down the entire conference's SOS and the effect is greater than an OOC game because the conference is more tightly linked mathematically. How does one have 16 wins in the regular season and have a losing record?

Can't State sues Geno Ford for $1.2 million
Zipmeister replied to Hilltopper's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
$1.2 million dollars. That makes an impact in a MAC Athletic Department budget. Just to clarify, Can't State is highly, HIGHLY unlikely to see a $1.2 million dollar payout on this. Even if the case eventually does go to court, which in all likelihood it will be settled for a much smaller dollar amount well before it ever sniffs a jury, these types of liquidated damages clauses are just not favored much in the courts. The courts will likely look at that big, $1.2 million dollar figure and say you are essentially trying to put a barrier in front of the guy ever leaving his position. They will likely look at it as a loose form of indentured servitude (we've got a big problem with that in this country) and would be very hesitant to issue a judgment anywhere close to that amount. It really is puzzling to me why Can't State is continuing to push this. They are unlikely to receive a payout that is going to cover their costs, it is going to have a deterrent effect on future coaching hires, it isn't going to bring Geno Ford back. It just seems like leftover bitterness and animocity is clouding their judgment to the point where they are making a bad decision just to try and screw with Ford and Bradley. This is pretty good. I touched on some of this earlier. Just because it's written in a part of a contract may not mean much. Some other part of the contract may negate it, the law may not support it, the details may be interpreted differently by different people, or a jury could find the breach penalties to be extremely excessive. Please don't fool yourselves into thinking that this is likely a clear issue. As I said, in most cases this is merely an attempt to push for a settlement. If they pursue this all the way to the end to try to get some portion of that amount as a judgement in their favor in a courtroom, it may not even be worth their time and expense. I also agree with those who have stated that Ken+ is a good enough job for an up and coming coach that this won't be a deterent. In fact, I think this kind of thing happens more often than we ever hear about. The thing you really have to remember is that Can't is going to have to have to prove an actual dollar amount for their damages related to this. They are going to have to prove what they lost out of pocket. I have a difficult time believing they will be able to prove $1.2 million out of pocket as a result of this. The most I could see them getting would be the cost related to their new coaching search along with the difference between Ford's old salary and Senderoff's salary as the new coach. I don't know the details of either contract, but I doubt that comes out to $1.2 million. Can't isn't going to get enough money out of this to buy a home game with Bradley when this is all said and done. Your command of contract law is impressively modest. -
Which Media Outlet Provides The Best Zips Coverage?

You got that email too? I told them if they would have asked a few months ago I would do it but now that I've been perma-banned from there without cause, I have to turn them down. Well that is truly their loss. -
Which Media Outlet Provides The Best Zips Coverage?
Zipmeister replied to Hilltopper's topic in Akron Zips Football
There could be a new and improved source of Zip info coming. Last week I got and email from somebody like Scout.com. I'm not saying it was Scout.com, but something like it. I trashed it and then dumped it out of trash so I can't verify the name at this point. Anyhow, they were looking for someone to report on Zips sports for them and thought I might like to volunteer. If I got this email, a bunch of you must have also, and I look forward to reading your reports. If I had taken them up on their offer, my byline would have been, "A Close Look at the Zips from Hundreds of Miles Away."
