Yes I would rather blow the money already spent on new facilities for the football program than drive away 2 successful coaches for a mere POSSIBILITY of a good head football coach. Also, I never said pay the soccer coach the same as the head football coach. If UA is going to spend lots of money on sports, then we need to appropriately compensate those already proven successful (in addition to upping the Football HC's salary). Also, instead of simply increasing base salary, how about a reasonable base salary with performance incentives, such as: $'s for winning the MAC East, $'s for getting to a bowl, $'s for winning the MAC?
-
Been there, done that. It sucks and men's basketball sucked for 14 years all the while football did nothing. Those who do not learn from history are destined to repeat it.Getting a good football HC, does not have to be done at the expense of basketball and soccer (meaning the football HC's salary cannot be double that, or more, of the basketball HC). You just don't treat the folks who are doing well for you that way.

I lived in Alabama when Terry Bowden was the HC at Auburn. He was horrible after his first year (with Pat Dye's recruits). Not only no, but HELL NO, in my opinion. I also vote to flush Zips football altogether (new stadium be damned) if this hire is another one done at the expense of basketball (like the D-IA/Faust hire) and soccer. Sorry, but I'm for putting money into the areas where we are successful before we dump much more money down the football hole. I loved seeing Domenik Hixon's catch to win the MACC and going to the Motor City bowl. But, the trip to Portland last Spring and our current trek in the NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament are just as important (if not moreso).

I was wondering that as well.

Yeah, everyone thinks Dambrot's a bum. It was funny...consistent with many quotes from last season...Dambrot's post-game comments to Frenchie after beating Drake began with a slight to the fans. The general theme was - "No one remembers how many games we won over the past 6 years...everyone thinks when we start 0-2 that we stink."They guy is always complaining about lack of support...never showing much gratitude for the many loyal followers he's got.I guess it is simply a motivational thing for him. He convinces himself that everyone thinks he's a bum, and that motivates him to be his best. But it isn't true.Like t or not, we all love Keith Dambrot and want him to stay at UA for as long as he wants to be here. I hope I didn't ruin his primary motivational tool by saying that. I'm with you CK, and I've told him as much in person. No one's perfect, and he'll always be critiqued, but not only is Keith Dambrot a great basketball head coach, but he is an Akron Alumnus and fan, like all of us. I love seeing him at the other sporting events. I sat behind him during one of the men's soccer games a few weeks before the men's basketball team practices began. He was telling someone how great the soccer team is and how much fun they are to watch.

So what are you suggesting? Throw roses on the field Sunday? Have a parade on Thursday? Only problem with that is, I believe UCLA is PAC-10 champs. We might meet them in N.C.Not suggesting anything. Just pointing out again that the Zips were better against the Big Ten than the Big Ten Champions were.
-
Since the Zips are regular season "Big Ten Champs", it's only fitting to take on a Pac-10 Team. Go Zips!

I will 2nd that... ALL HAIL THE MIGHTY SOCCER ZIPS!For anyone who may not have already seen it, Elton Alexander wrote a great article on Zips' soccer. Elton's Article on Nov 19th"But Akron soccer is anything but an overnight success story, and the sport's profile is unlike any other sports program at the university. In fact, the Zips have won or shared in 12 regular-season MAC titles, including each of the past five seasons." ..."Akron soccer has been in the NCAA's top division since 1966. Not only have the Zips been competitive, they have built a reputation as being among the nation's best programs.Under six coaches since 1955, Akron has had just two losing seasons and none since 1965. That's 44 straight seasons of winning, anchored now by coach Caleb Porter."Stu Parry set the path for the program and laid the foundation the program has followed ever since," former Zips coach Ken Lolla said of Akron's first soccer coaching icon.Lolla left Akron for Louisville, where he is in his third season. He has the Cardinals in the NCAA Tournament for the third straight season."We ended up doing it differently than how Caleb has done it," Lolla said. "We did it with players that were somewhat overlooked. Caleb has done a tremendous job of bringing in some of the top players in the country."It always starts with good people, and when you look at Caleb, it starts with him -- very driven, and Stu Parry was the same. Then what you do is first sell a vision, a dream of what you expect the program to achieve. The kids come because of that belief. They believe in your dream."Akron sophomore forward Teal Bunbury, the 2009 MAC Player of the Year, said he knew about the Zips program while growing up in Minnesota. But it wasn't until Porter recruited him that he realized the place soccer holds at the school."I was looking at New Mexico and UCLA," Bunbury said, "but the thing about those schools was that soccer wasn't the biggest sport there. They have football and basketball, and those are looked at way ahead of soccer. At Akron, soccer is important."When Caleb recruited me, he made me feel like I was going to be part of a family, and when I came on my official visit, that was when I understood it was the place for me." Academic All-Americans with majors in microbiology and mechanical engineering. -
From GoZips.comThe Zips will not have to wait long to find out who their next opponent is as the NCAA will announce its Soccer Championship selections on ESPNews Monday, Nov. 16, between 5:30 and 6 p.m. (EST). The Akron Athletics department will host an official Watch Party at the Barley House, located on 222 S. Main Street. Fans are encouraged to attend the free event, which will feature a number of food specials.

Same old story that caused me to walk away for awhile sometime ago (after causing us to lose a great basketball coach)...Football gets the investment while soccer and basketball (women's included) are taking the right steps on the pitch and on the court. "send a check and go do something more productive with your time" ... I suggest going to Men's and Women's basketball games and PACK the Pouch for #1 Men's Soccer post-season!

Why do you even post stupid stuff like this? What's your angle?I agree CK. Also, the makeup of this year's championship committee should help with fairness toward the Zips. From pages 8/9 of the 2009 DIVISION IMEN’S SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP HANDBOOK:The NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championship is under the control, direction and supervision of the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Committee. Current members of the committee are as follows:Al Albert, College of William and MaryJohn Bluem, The Ohio State UniversityElmar Bolowich, University of North Carolina, Chapel HillJohn Diffley, St. John’s University (New York), chairCharlie Elwood, Fordham UniversityKurt Esser, University of New MexicoMike Getman, University of Alabama at BirminghamMary Lu Gribschaw, University of AkronDiane O’Brien, University of California, Santa BarbaraSeth Roland, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Metropolitan

I will admit that I didn't like the band playing throughout the MSU game. I thought it was too loud such that the Zips couldn't hear each other on the field. I would think that Coach Porter would work that with the band if it was a distraction. But, I did like the short playing of the fight song outside of the soccer field during the Hartwick game...just my opinion.
-
THANKS Zips footballers for a great win! GO ZIPS!And, as always and forever...
-
Thanks to the band for stopping outside the soccer field and playing the fight song on your march back to Gazetta Hall from Infocision Stadium. For me, it was a GREAT addition to an awesome day on campus and well-deserved by the 18-0-0 Zips Mens Soccer Team. BTW...I'm looking forward to your marching through campus and playing at Zipsfest while the No. 1 Zips soccer team is playing the Huskies is the Mac Tournament next Friday.
-
Ya, just because they lost means nothing for where we sit. RPI does not matter though, if the season ended today, we would be the number one seed. It only matters for at-large bids. The Zips will have an at-large bid thanks to the MAC.
-
Nov 7th (4 hrs between starts should work, but could be a very cold afternoon sitting outside)3:30 pm - Zips football vs. K.e.n.t.7:30 pm - Zips soccer vs. HartwickBTW...It should be fun watching the soccer game on Nov 13th when the band marches through campus and plays at Zipsfest prior to the football game. It should also be a bonus to have ESPNU on campus when we are hosting the MAC Mens Soccer Tournament.
-
Unfortunately, we are likely to be outnumbered by Ken.t fans in our own stadium.

Give me a couple of hits off of whatever dreal is smokin. And in reply to: "On a related note, is Bain's UA career officially over?"Yes, as of two years ago. I told ya Sewell would kick some ass. Go Zips You were on that one, dreal. The defense in general is hanging tough (sounds familiar). The O's gotta get it going.Special Teams need to get it going! Who's the Special Teams coach anyway...nevermind.

No Automatic Berth for MAC Men's Champ in 2009
Zip_ME87 replied to Zip_ME87's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
Of course not...as expected.EDIT: And, BTW...the e-mail I sent was pleasant, just asking if it was true that the MAC had no automatic berth this year and why.Received a response from the MAC today. No explanation of the loss of Automatic Qualiification in 2009, just that the MAC would regain AQ in 2010. -
Let me know if you do...I'll join you with my Browns #9 jersey.

If you think things are bad now......
Zip_ME87 replied to johnnyzip84's topic in Akron Zips Football
I wouldn't limit the search to I-AA but would also look at young (up and coming) Division II and III head coaches who are/have been successful. I remember Dr. Gazetta getting such a man to lead the Zips Men's Basketball team while I was an undergrad at UA in the 1980's.From Wikipedia...(Huggins' Early career)...Huggins was only 27 when he became a collegiate head coach, accepting the position at Walsh University in 1980. In three seasons at Walsh, he compiled a 71-26 record, twice earning NAIA District 22 Coach of the Year honors. Huggins directed the 1982–83 team to a perfect 30-0 regular season mark and an eventual 34-1 mark. After serving as an assistant at University of Central Florida for the 1983-84 season, Huggins was named head coach at the University of Akron where he compiled a 97-46 record and reached post-season play in three of his five seasons there including an NCAA bid during the 1985–1986 season. -
No debate here. We all would take that kind of suck right about now.20 - 11 home loss to K.e.n.t.Like I said -- OU sucks. I asked people from Tennessee and BG...they agreed.Just because the Zips suck more doesn't change the fact that OU is a crappy football program in an insanely crappy conference. At least it appears you got that right. I wish you're prediction of how the Zips would finish the season was close to correct. Unfortunately, at this point I don't see how the Zips will even beat EMU other than to take over their spot as the worst team in college football. Wow, do I wish we would just go ahead and dump JD now. Problem is that Montgomery needs to go with him.

No Automatic Berth for MAC Men's Champ in 2009
Zip_ME87 replied to Zip_ME87's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
But the MAC currently has 7 teams, 6 of which have competed together for the preceding 2 years (Hartwick joined in 2007).AkronBuffaloWestern MichiganNorthern IllinoisBowling GreenHartwickFlorida AtlanticThis is why I haven't been able to figure it out. Am I missing something? (Hartwick is Div I for men's soccer and meets the eight year requirement for that, I believe, when I looked at their website.)EDIT: I missed this in your post - I believe Hartwick is technically considered to be a member of Division III, as only Men's Soccer and Women's Polo are classified as Division I sports (they're allowed one sport for each gender), therefore that knocks our "core institutions" down to six.You might be right about Hartwick. But, since they are Div I for Men's Soccer and have been for years, I believe, I would have thought that they qualified as a "core institution".
