  1. Just in case anybody thinks this problem is unique to Akron: http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/local/2015/05/15/Inspector_General_seeks_info_on_Ohio_University_house.html
  2. EJT seats under 3k. Why wouldn't a show like Tyson work at the JAR?
  3. Also, please limit your answers to events that happened within the past two decades.
  4. I don't think they've had lectures in EJT since the turn of the century. 95+% of students at UA have never been there, and probably couldn't point it out if they were standing in front of it.
  5. http://www.nscaa.com/rankings/4159/NCAADivisionI/men/PreseasonPoll The Zips are ranked 25th, but with plenty of opportunity to move up. #1 UCLA, #3 Georgetown, #9 Michigan State, #13 Maryland, #22 Saint Louis, #23 Penn State, #24 Old Dominion, along with Ohio State, Wake Forest, UAB, VCU, and UCSB from the receiving votes category are on the schedule.
  6. Maybe if they didn't focus primarily on Broadway shows and occasional rock acts that peaked when the current students' grandparents were in college, they wouldn't have faced such severe cuts. EJT Hall had such potential for serving the students, but their focus was elsewhere. The university shouldn't have to heavily subsidise something that was used almost exclusively by the outside community.
  7. In case you wanted to know where former Zips Baseball players ended up: http://www.scarboroughsquad.com/
  8. So is the establishment of a cadet corps. It's almost as if Scarborough is using the budget crisis as a free pass to change the university however he wants.
  9. Coach Bowden will be on the radio with Joe Dunn at 1:30 today.
  10. This article from 2012 really foreshadowed the move: http://www.ohio.com/news/local/e-j-thomas-hall-plans-to-hike-rental-fees-1.307891 The place was a money pit. Probably worse than the Rubber Bowl.
  11. Finally a good move. EJ Thomas was a massive waste of a building as far as serving the students went. The events held there had nothing to do with the university. It's like if UA was running Blossom.
  12. Joe Jakubick was drafted but never played.
  13. http://247sports.com/Recruitment/Bryce-Hargrove-86375/RecruitInterests Akron loses Coventry DE Bryce Hargrove to Pitt. We really need to #BeatPitt again.
  14. Scarborough is on 92.3 The Fan right now, but I can't listen. It will probably (hopefully) be up as a podcast later today.
  15. The moment a team finishes undefeated and is left out of the playoffs, the playoffs will expand.
  16. The University of New Orleans dropped a bunch of sports and tried to move to D-III following Hurricane Katrina. They went to D-II instead after a cost/benefit analysis, and have since moved back to D-I in the Southland conference. They're trying to start a football program and possibly move back to the Sun Belt. The pressure on college athletics is to move upward. Programs don't drop down without extenuating circumstances, and it's generally a mad rush to get to the highest possible level and to launch football programs at universities that have never fielded the sport before. Why is that? I don't have any data to back up my opinion, but I would surmise that it's because the benefits of playing in D-I (and fielding a football team) outweigh the costs.
  17. They can't be stupid enough to believe that if they eliminated athletics, they would get the money instead. It doesn't get redistributed, it's just plain gone.
  18. Scholarships now are based on Full Cost of Attendance, not just Tuition and Room and Board. FCOA is used by the US Dept of Education to determine how much federal aid a school receives, among other things. It's not something that can be fudged in the name of football without severe consequences.
  19. https://mobile.twitter.com/AkronZips/status/621768699884638208 Everybody needs to share this. Hopefully the ABJ and the rest will get the message.
  20. http://www.indystar.com/story/sports/high-school/hs-blog/2015/07/14/pikes-alyssa-clay-commits--akron-honorable-mention-all-state/30155069/ 5-8 G Alyssa Clay has committed to play for Akron! Averaged 11.4 points and 3.3 rebounds as a junior.
  21. Unless they pull a CSU and announce that we're starting a varsity Lacrosse team in a few weeks. Lacrosse is the sport of choice for rich suburban kids these days, which gets rich suburban parents involved in the athletic program. That's the conclusion CSU made, as did Mike Waddell when he was AD at Towson.
  22. There's a reason that no team has ever gone back to I-AA after moving up. To even suggest such a move is to show complete and utter ignorance about the entire situation. Moving to I-AA is a massive money loser, far more so than I-A, thanks to the total loss of the revenue streams from bowl payouts, TV contracts, and Playoff payouts. Moving to I-AA only saves you 22 scholarships (About $1 million, as a generous estimate), while costing you several times that amount, and that's only up-front costs. Travel would be much more expensive (There are not nearly as many FCS schools as FBS schools in the general area). The Faculty Senate is full of morons who are convinced that they know everything and that the university should revolve around themselves and not the students, and that budget cuts in other areas somehow magically transfer extra money to faculty salaries.
  23. When you're dozens of millions of dollars in debt, can you really afford to give up "just" two grand per student in this program? Every little thing counts. And who, exactly, is going to see them? The empty chairs at the football games? The drivers on exchange who are busy avoiding potholes and parked cars?
  24. I would cut spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on unnecessary re-branding. I would cut the expensive renovations to the President's residence and the tens of thousands in hotel bills that the university is paying while they wait for more meeting rooms to be added to the house. I would cut some administrative positions and reduce the salary of the rest. But most of all, I would strive to increase fundraising and revenue as much as possible. Cuts alone won't cut it.
