Zips at Texas-Arlington — NIT Round 2 (Mon 8 pm)
Dr Z replied to Dr Z's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
The Zips are five point underdogs tonight. Brett likes the Zips and the points Odds Shark's computers predict the Zips to lose 70-73. "Rebounding is always a key in handicapping, and Akron is ranked No. 196 in NCAA. Contrast that with Texas-Arlington's No. 35 mark in the paint." Elton Alexander writes The Zips are looking to continue their road success. "I've been gone so long I feel like a pro coach,'' Akron coach Keith Dambrot said. And he notes the players are out of their comfort zone as well. "They're about ready to lose their minds.''......"They're going to be challenging. They're big and have a really good point guard Dambrot said. The Mavericks will have a lot of bodies to throw at the 6-10, 290-pound Johnson as five players stand between 6-8 and 7-1. The team has three double-figure scorers and three more that score better than eight points a game." George Thomas gets KD on the phone for some discussion about Texas-Arlington yesterday. "There could be a wild card for the Zips in this game. Center Isaiah “Big Dog” Johnson tweaked his knee against the Cougars." -
If this were my offense, I would explore adjusting my personnel packages at the line of scrimmage with the flexibility of MTB and TC. Assuming TC could lineup at WR and RB, we already know that MTB can lineup at TE, WR and H-back. With the same huddle, you could adjust to 00, 01, 02, 10, 11, 12... after getting to the line of scrimmage to see what personnel the defense was playing. That would be a tempting option for me to experiment with a couple times in each half.

Lining up inside and outside.

His Instagram account indicates he's in Ponte Vedra Beach. Jojo questions if he is "cutting weight" in the comments.

Full article by Dan Shingler found here "...It would be difficult to find a city the size of Akron, with a population of just under 200,000, that has seen the departure of as many top leaders as the Rubber City has in recent years. But even with changes at the top of Akron's major corporations, government entities and university, observers say the town is far from rudderless. If anything, they say, Akron has found renewed energy and an influx of new and often younger leaders..." "...Segedy is eager to listen to neighborhood residents and is a champion of bike paths, walkable streetscapes and other things that will improve urban life in Akron. Others credit Matthew Wilson with changing attitudes at his organization. "He's a great example of someone who is different with his approach. He's putting the students first and trying to drive changes through discussions with students about what they need," Mullen said. And Mullen himself represents a new generation of leaders. At 36, he's one of the youngest heads of a major United Way branch in the country..."

If Big Dog is going to have a "field day", I'm not sure I can envision a 330 pound guy running up and down a basketball court where the total is over 170. If I'm mistaken, the trainer better be very close to the court. -
He was right behind the annoying lady that kept standing up on my tv screen every trip down the floor. jk

Postgame Quotes from UTA Head Coach Scott Cross last night. (I can't find any post game presser from KD) Can you talk about the performance of Jorge Bilbao, who has been ill? "At shootaround today, Jorge couldn't even stand up. He had so much abdominal pain. He had to go to the doctor and get three bags of IV for dehydration. He is the toughest player I've ever coached." How important is hosting the second round to the program "We know we are going to have another big challenge in Akron, another very good basketball team. To have a home game in postseason play is a special opportunity for our guys.." Replay of UTA / BYU on ESPN3 Anybody want to take a stab at guessing the line for the Zips / UTA game? -
There were times I thought Kwan did contribute without the ball with his spacing. When the ball went down to Big Dog multiple times, UH had to respect Kwans three point shooting ability by staying on him and not going down to double team Big Dog, which enabled BD to get to the rim.

From Steve Gonzales of the Houston Chronicle. Sixteen more photos by Steve here. I liked this one the best, result of a great pass.

Game is on ESPNU. UT-Arlington beat BYU 105-89 to get to the second round. Mavs Home Page has a lot of info.

Western Michigan Pro Day update Corey Davis (ankle) did not participate, it was expected. Davis underwent surgery in January to address a severe high ankle sprain that involved two ligament tears. There is concern Davis won't work out at all before April's draft, although Davis has insisted he will. Davis has the best game tape in this year's wideout class. The Browns worked out Keion Adams at WMU's pro day. Zach Terrell has a workout set up with the Detroit Lions.

Great finish. Congratulations staff and players! Keep the MSG dream alive.

Big Dog, no rebounds in the first half? Odd.

Mark your calendars, June 2, 2017 at Shale Creek Golf Club

Booooooooooooooo.

That sucks, I thought they did a good job. Hopefully some of the talent gets picked up by others.

Player Profiles: Ohio OLB Tarell Basham. The Steelers have already met with Tarell, both Toledo prospects, and Cooper Rush. Seems like a possibility of them getting another MAC player to Latrobe.

The 2012-2013 Akron Zips: The Breakthrough Year That Wasn't
Dr Z replied to UAZip0510's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
I sure hope the Zips win tonight, so fans have better topics to discuss. -
With Western Michigan’s win at Illinois and Northwestern last year, the MAC has won a regular season game vs Big Ten opponents in each of the last 11 consecutive seasons, the longest streak in MAC history.

The last guy (Jimmy Hall) to play against Big Dog is 6'8" 235. Hall had 19 points, 10 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. I hope the guys you listed are less talented than Jimmy. Big Dog will get his touches tonight, no doubt. Hopefully he converts the majority of his attempts, and the Zips hit their threes when he passes back to the perimeter. Something tells me it will come down to Kwan having a successful game to pull off the upset. Time to walk the walk, get to MSG and prove to everyone this program is serious! We need some "January Kwan" tonight! BTW, with the Cal loss, the Cougars are the highest seeded team left on our quadrant. UH coach Sampson says that 330 pound Isaiah Johnson is a joy to watch.
