Good to hear that sales have been up. I wasn't able to see any crowd online, but I assumed they were on the pressbox side anyway. I'm still hoping for a nice crowd for the opener. I'm sure most casual fans will show up because of the Bowden name. Students might be a tougher draw because most of them know the team hasn't been very good for some time now. Probably would guess most of them didn't know who Terry Bowden was before he came here. I know even I had to google him after the hire.

Anyone else a bit worried about fan support? or do we just blame this one on the weather? I'm not too worried, but it's funny to think Ianello had a packed fieldhouse last spring and Terry only had a few hundred (from what Rasor said).

I feel like this game actually hurt my optimism for this season. I watched the first half and it just doesn't look like a good football team. Luckily since only a few dozen fans actually went to the game, maybe the general public won't know just how bad they are. I know it's tough to judge a scrimmage like this. You don't know if one side is really good, or the other just bad. But hey I guess we really can't be any worse than last year, technically 2 wins is an improvement. And we will have more wins than the Browns... At QB I gotta go with either Moore or Pohl. Pohl seems to have the most potential, but still too inexperienced to start week 1.

Yeah because schools with crap facilities like Dix and Peden Stadium deserve to move up? Have you ever seen some of these schools in the MAC? So many glorified high school or D2 looking stadiums and gyms. It's a joke, really. Welcome to the Big East Can't State!!

It's funny there are people saying we're suck at everything, don't bring anything to C-USA, etc. But then I look closer and realize the people saying these things are fans of schools like UTEP and Southern Miss. haha really? I mean we may not be great at football, but our basketball and soccer teams speak for themselves. I think we would be one of the best schools in C-USA instantly, and really the only MAC school that needs to move out.

Wait a minute...I'm confused...the Pirates have fans? I thought they dropped down to AAA years ago lol

Well I'm a Browns fan, but not a Holmgren fan so much. Not that I hate the guy, just don't have much faith in him right now. I'm sure he'll give one of his speeches about building for the future and patience and all that stuff that we've heard a million times. Probably even draw those comparisons between the Browns and Zips that so many in NE Ohio like to do. But the sad part is, the Zips actually are improving while the Browns are getting worse. I think I'm more excited to hear that Jim Donovan is also going to be there. He's very respected in Cleveland.

Spring practice blog post for April 17
akzipper replied to GeorgeThomasABJ's topic in Akron Zips Football
I'm glad Bowden is so focused on developing the offense to score big plays. If watching the Zips and Browns has taught me anything, lack of big plays results in boring football, frustrating drives, and setting for a lot of field goals. An explosive offense will be fun for everyone, and put people in the stands...BUT can it ever happen?? -
The 2013 Recruiting Thread
akzipper replied to Quickzips's topic in Akron Zips Basketball Recruiting
Just saw sophomore guard Jordan Sibert and sophomore forward J.D. Weatherspoon were transferring from OSU. Any chance we can get either one of them? Treadwell might need some help replacing Zeke in 2 years, and Weatherspoon is a 6'6' PF that could work out. -
Dambrot at Pro Football Hall of Fame luncheon
akzipper replied to ZipAnalyst's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Can't he just flat out say "I will be at UA forever and am signing a 40 year contract" haha I'll let him retired at 93. -
Dambrot at Pro Football Hall of Fame luncheon
akzipper replied to ZipAnalyst's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Duration of what? Duration of another season? end of his contract? until he gets a better offer? very vague response or am I just reading too much into it? -
Asking himself questions? lol Terry: So Terry how do you think the team played on saturday. Terry: Well, that's a great question Terry. I'm very pleased with their performance. Terry: Did you feel that beating Can't by 70 points was unsportsmanlike? Terry: Not sure Terry. They are such a terrible school, we wanted to beat them by 100, just ran out of time. Terry: Well Terry, It was great talking to you. I look forward to next weeks show. Terry: My pleasure Terry, Fear the Dadgum Roo! I couldn't watch 30min of that!

I'm sure they can find someone else, even a student at UA that could work well as the host of both shows. But it would have to be someone professional. Too many times colleges have students hosting that are very inexperienced making it hard to watch. See: Boom goes they dynamite, and Can't State Sideline Reporter Fail. I would definitely prefer a blonde girl as host, but hey brunettes and redheads aren't bad either!

It just comes with the territory of being in a poor conference like the MAC. It happens every year, we see coaches jump to other conferences. I think the reason most were mad about Lebron, was that 90% of NE Ohio was positive he would stay. When you're so certain about something, just to be proven wrong. It stings! My suggestion to Zips fans is to appreciate what we have now, and try to make the best of it. They will be moving up, it's just a matter of time really. I HIGHLY doubt that Porter, Dambrot, Bowden, and even Tressel will all be employed at UA in a few years. The chances for all of them to be here for an extended period of time, are not very good. UNLESS, we can get out of the garbage conference that is the MAC. Something that also is very unlikely. Just make the most, and hope that all of these coaches will leave UA in a better place than it was when they arrived.

Well they were supposed to have brick around the scoreboard too. Both would have been nice cosmetic additions, but I guess they didn't see it as a must financially. I had heard they didn't want to use brick on the scoreboard because it would make it easier to expand the stadium in the future. Using the current placement as temporary. But really doubt they will be adding more seats to InfoCision in the next Century... Hopefully they'll eventually put brick up or some graphics to cover the concrete stadium walls.
-
Man imagine if the spring game sold out...haha at least those 30,000 will get to take good pictures of the pigs flying by the stadium! I'm expecting 4-5,000 if that. Even college football legend Rob Ianello had a decent crowd at the Fieldhouse last year. Hopefully what's left of the Akron football fans shows some support this weekend. Anyone know if the game will be streamed? I doubt it will, but I'd like to watch some...

I've always wanted them to put some banners over the concrete, similar to what they do at Browns Stadium. Leaves room for advertising like hastags, sponsors, retired numbers, bowl game appearances, conference championships, etc. Even put "ROO ZOO" really big in the endzone by the empty "student sections" Not that we have a lot of accolades but would really give a cool look, instead of the bare concrete. If I remember correctly Mississippi State was actually the first school to use hashtags on a football field. Being on the field is a bit of an overkill, but stadium walls is okay...

Team Banquet - Thursday, April 12th Who's attending?
akzipper replied to taxpayer's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
I have no problem with this. As long as we are the #1 tenant and it gets built SOON, they can put it downtown. I think it's the best and quickest option to keep everybody happy. -
On the flipside maybe his inexperience could cost us?...but really don't think that's he less experienced than the other two, just younger and the only one not to see time in an actual college game. Not sure how much of a difference that would make.
-
I haven't been following the QB breakdown very closely, but is there any chance Pohl is starting in the fall? or still a 3rd string option?
-
Zeke, Tree, and Gilliam? I honestly just guessed on the last two, Zeke has always been a hard worker. I don't see Harney or Diggs as very dedicated "practice" players, more of game guys, so I ruled them out. Not sure about Abreu or Walsh...and with Deji and Egner's injuries I'd expect them to be taking it easy.
-
Not really a fan of any of them. They should just go with a blue or gold version of the helmet tshirts they gave away two years ago. By far the best shirt I own!

Keith Dambrot statement from UA news release
akzipper replied to GeorgeThomasABJ's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Dambrot deserves at least a base of $600,000. If a bad school like Duquesne can afford it, we can too. Forget about soccer and football for a second, and shelf over some money for basketball. Attendance and Zips basketball is on the rise. Many games were packed last season, and with any luck we can carry over our success and start the season strong in 2012-13. I've always felt UA took KD for granted. They really don't know the impact he has had, and the crushing blow it would be to our program if he left. You aren't going to find another KD out there UA, if you don't secure him it WILL cost people their jobs. -
Dambrot: The chatter that wouldn't die - until now
akzipper replied to GeorgeThomasABJ's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
You'd be surprised, that "radio host" from Pittsburgh will tweet about Dambrot again in a few days. Even after you, KD, and UA have proved him wrong, he still won't leave it alone. Guy needs to get a life! -
Dambrot says 'yes' to Duquesne this time
akzipper replied to GeorgeThomasABJ's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
I noticed this article last night. Funny thing is the blogger really only compared the A10 to MAC and talked about money. If this were Xavier or Dayton I can understand, but Duquesne is in the "MAC west" of the A10. Not competitive! He says Dambrot has done everything he can in the MAC. Meaning MAC schools don't make noise nationally... Really? Did Ohio just made the Sweet 16? Didn't Can't make the elite 8? Didn't our soccer team make 2 straight national championship games? Funny thing is Duquesne hasn't made the tournament in 30 years. All but 2-3 MAC teams have at least 1 tournament appearance during that time frame.
