  1. While I agree with the Cap'n that we really could use a WR with some height, both Russell and Sconiers played well at times for true FR last year. I respectfully disagree. If we had Cherry/Sparks/Irvin, Russell and Sconiers would be 4th and 5th on the depth chart. We need someone the caliber of Schifino, Bailey, Cherry, Sparks, Irvin, Hixon, Arthur etc. What we have now reminds me of Mongomery or Goodwin. We won't win anything if those guys are our in our Top 2 or 3 @ WR. Both are young, so I could be wrong. But I don't think I am. I’ll admit that neither has done anything to this point that compares favorably to those Zips receivers of the past. They each made plenty of mistakes (as did the entire receiving corps throughout the year) in 2010 as well. I was just saying that they both showed some signs (to me) of having some talent. Russell, in particular, had a knack for getting separation on the deep ball. Yes he dropped an easy one (KY?), but he was also overthrown at least 3 or 4 other times. Sconiers showed some ability to run with the ball after the catch. Whether or not they develop into contributing #1, #2 or #3 receivers of course remains to be seen. I’ll make this qualified prediction. IF Russell is still with the team (you have to give me that one!) and IF the QB/Line play is even moderately improved from last year, I predict ONE of the two will emerge as a quality receiver in 2011 (say, 700+ receiving yards and 5+ TDs).
  2. While I agree with the Cap'n that we really could use a WR with some height, both Russell and Sconiers played well at times for true FR last year. In fact, as much as I am eager to see what the final 2011 recruit list entails, I am just as curious to know if Richard Hall and Antoine Russell have been reinstated. Does anybody know?
  3. I can't take this guy too serious when he says Rossi may replace Brian Thomas at LB. If the guy doesn't know the names of the starters on the team, he probably isn't too up on other things. I caught that too. If he was on the fence with regards to continuing his blog coverage of the Zips, you may have just nudged him to stop
  4. Awesome read that provides great insight as to why Nagbe justly won the Hermann! Thanks for posting it, Zip_ME87!
  5. Please upload to youtube and post immediately! Now THAT'S what I call Zips passion!
  6. That's what they get for firing a perfectly good coach in Stan Joplin. Or for recruiting point shavers. Point taken, although it’s debatable how much blame Joplin deserved for a problem that started with the football program, then permeated the UT athletic department. And, technically, he recruited players who would later go on to become point shavers. Besides if you listen to most Rocket fans, Stan was fired primarily for having a mediocre record and not getting enough butts in the seats.
  7. Another Story on Goodman
  8. Hey Zip fans! Did any of you hear anything just now? No? I didn't think so.
  9. That's what they get for firing a perfectly good coach in Stan Joplin.
  10. I can't argue too much with having the Zips at #6. We'll see very quickly weather Ball St is really #1. IMHO, they've been a sleeping giant for a few years now. Also, here's a correction for you. The Akron-CMU game is on SUNDAY at the JAR.
  11. Although Montreal won't join MLS until 2012, Evan Bush is currently undergoing a tryout with the Impact.
  12. All high school coaches have to do that. There was some excitement among Zips fans when it was learned that Taylor was going to be a Zip. You said he was "highly recruited". He absolutely was not.
  13. Out of the myriad 3+ star players he signed, maybe 5 or 6 over his career ever became starters. Most never saw the field. The recruiting services don't keep track of things so far back, but I seem to remember that Jason Taylor, Dwight Smith, Reggie Corner, and Chase Blackburn were highly recruited coming out of high school. JT's HS coach had to shop him around according to the "must read" in THIS ZNO thread
  14. C-Bus Dispatch article on current parity in the MAC East. It's interesting that Coles is stating publicly that he doesn't think we've seem the REAL Akron team just yet.
  15. Where'd this come from? I haven't heard anything like that. Their interactions with myself and others. If you think it’s bad now, just IMAGINE how rough it would be if you were still uakronkid
  16. Well I'm an AKRON supporter, who is certainly not sold on iCoach at this point. But I'm willing to see what he can do with an entire class of iRecruits. As for your 2nd question, Nick Rossi selected the Zips over WVU and Temple. You can decide whether the 'eers are a quality BCS team or not.
  17. Great article. Thanks JZ. JT should have been a Steeler. I'll never forgive Tom Donahoe & Cowher for missing on JT in that draft. I'm always excited to see a Woodland Hills guy play for the Zips. Loved Brandon Payne. Agreed! We need to tap that resource once again. Payne had as much heart as any player the Zips have ever had. He was never the same after the knee injury, but he still managed to contribute.
  18. "Must Read" on JT
  19. IMHO, Mel Blount is one of the very few players whose play trancends "football eras". I truly believe he could compete in today's NFL and there aren't many players from the '70s for whom I would make that claim.
  20. I've said this before on U@B's board. Starks has always reminded me of Eric Dickerson with his "high" running style. He doesn't have the blazing speed of Craig James' Pony Express backfield mate, but he is more powerful.
  21. Excellent work, MDZip!
  22. +1 Updated Rivals Rankings now have ATH Tyler Williams as a 3 star. They also reflect the AJ Fox verbal.
  23. Certainly Daryl deserves a lot of credit, but it was McNees' 3 that had me believing we would win the game. Let's hope this game is exactly the confidence boost that Steve, and the team, needed to start a winning streak of their own.
  24. Saw him and HS teammate DJ Bettinger play a lot when they were both just starting out in 3rd and 4th grade. Back then, Larry JR actually preferred soccer so perhaps this contributed to his being a "late bloomer". OK, so maybe growing something like 7 inches after his FR year may have had something to do with it too If he does wind up with the Zips, I'd like to think the Mechanical Engineering department might expand their vehicle competitions to include drag racing!
