The Cleveland Browns could ruin our soccer pitch
Balsy replied to Zip_ME87's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
Agreed +1 on the arena. +1 on how it doesn't make sense that a pristine playing surface can be maintained. -
Completely agree. I'm even willing to pitch in more than 50 if need be. But we gotta get there first of course. We always gotta expect results first and foremost, but you've got to realize that in my short fandom of the Zips, there's been very little to celebrate when it comes to football. I know basketball and soccer have been good, but football is my personal favorite, and I've been so desperate for something to go our way for once. I'd like to see more interaction of the Alumni with the UA community, and it starts with having conversations like this. Hell, we should consider it for the basketball team too, if they can reach that level too.

Spin, just give it up. This has turned into a Zip_ME87 rant fest. -

Love the interview. Donterio seems like the type of kid we want to bring here. -
Count me in for $50 as well.

This is the last thing that I'll say on the matter. Athletics is not what brings people to UA for their college education. It's the proximity to where they live and the campus itself. I don't remember an uptick in enrollment because UA won a national championship. You have three anecdotal testimonies about how visiting campus in situations other than official visits, was inspiration to find out more about the university. And I can assure you from MORE THAN ONE (in the hundreds) well placed sources (because you like hearsay) say that visiting campus was a major factor in them choosing Akron. ANY event that brings people to campus (and makes money is the process) is a no brainer. An absolute no brainer. Even if we exclude hearsay, and anecdotes (because they're not evidence), it still make sense logically. If you have athletic fields and arenas sitting unused in off seasons, and a BIG NAME tenant is willing to pay to use them and bring 10,000s of their loyal fans to those unused arenas, you'd be stupid to say no. State Ohio University holds other events than just football at the Horseshoe. It holds other events than just basketball at their basketball arena. And (I hate to say it) but those two programs can pay for themselves AND have more national championships than we do. Even without any other evidence; the idea itself is a solid one, a logical one and it supports itself...and until there is EVIDENCE that is both quantitative and qualitative, that this logic is bad...it will remain that way. I've indulged enough on this topic, and I don't even have the burden of proof. The Burden is on you guys to prove that this is a bad idea, and thus far you have failed. -

When I was in highschool looking at colleges UA was dead last on my list as well. The first time I ever saw the campus by going to my sister's graduation which just so happened to be on the campus of The University of Akron. I remember how impressed I was, thinking "this isn't as bad as I heard it was". Never looked back. As for the burden of proof fknbuflobo, we don't have a burden of proof, or rather the "burden" has already been solved and explained logically. -
Lets do it then. If the we beat Marshall, ZipsNation should pull money together and put the ad in. The only problem is that the ABJ would probably forget to put it in, or find some other way to mess it up.

There's a difference between wild assumptions and logically inferred assumptions (aka inferences). It is hearsay, when there is (so far) no evidence to back up information that is reported through a secondary agent as opposed to the primary agent it comes from. Hearsay is not evidence. There was evidence to support the watergate leaks, so it wasn't just hearsay. The Claim being made here is that "The Browns will ruin the soccer pitch". You have the burden of proof to support your claim. Hearsay is not evidence. (crickets start chirping). Provide evidence to support that contention. Provide evidence that Top of the line programs don't use their facilities for anything else BUT soccer (this being the second unsupported claim you've made here.) Just because the AD may have been wrong on a decision in the past, does not make EVERY decision made by that AD a bad one. That's a fallacy. And so far the best argument supporting your claim is coming from Keener who posts a list of other Colleges that have hosted the Browns training camp, which is a really good counter argument to those of us claiming that it would be good for the University, we really haven't had a good response to that. However, to be completely honest, I don't think LZip, Spin and I are claiming that it will be good for the university (making us shoulder a level of burden of proof) but instead we're rejecting your claim that it won't be, and it has the potential to be good. Until you really can provide solid evidence supporting your claims, we will continue to reject them. Because logically 1+1=2. Until you can show that it doesn't, those of us who are in favor of looking for a partnership between the Browns and UA will continue to reject what you're saying. Perhaps we should wait until GT can dig up some real facts and information on this topic...but we may have to wait a long time for that. -
I would like to say that I had a shaky, uneasy, but strange feeling about a possible Browns win last week. Starting yesterday, I started getting that feeling about this game.

Because why would you? Besides, I thought you were going to leave this discussion until real evidence of a proposal surfaces. But I will say, those of us who support entertaining the idea of hold Browns camp on campus are not making wild assumptions without evidence, we're making them based upon inference and logic. You're begining to sound like a conspiracy theorist (pulling quotes and pointing to hearsay as if it were evidence)...and I know Zips fans like their conspiracy theories...but it's time to layoff. It absolutely make perfect sense to make this deal with the browns, under the assumption that the pitch is only used for 1-year, and that UA makes a profit. These assumptions are still assumptions (yes) but they're logically inferred ones. Again, an absolute no-brainer. -

I went to the Browns game yesterday. The win was awesome, but I did make one observation that pertains to this conversation: The Browns real grass field looked absolutely amazing. It did last year as well, but this year it looked absolutely gorgeous. If A field of grass that is used specifically for football can look that well, be that well maintained considering that it is football, than there is absolutely no reason why ours can't be that well maintained even with football on it. One year practicing on the pitch, for the possibility of having the browns on campus for awhile over the summer, is an absolute no-brainer. -
Agreed.

Focus folks. Retool and get ready to beat Buster Bronco.
-
Exactly which is why all you need to do is add "is what my sign would say" after.
-
Hardly anyone cares about the MAC, and certainly no-one cares about the MVFC. Beyond that, Indiana State vs. Indiana is a rivalry game (for some reason)...there's huge motivation to go in there and win.
-
I am sending in my photos! Zippy BACK ON TOP (before I start sending them in)
-
Or the little fact that the MAC currently has a 3-4 record against the "BIG".
-
Correction made!
-
Yeah, so having an empty stadium sitting on campus unused during off season makes perfect sense. Those students can continue to walk by an empty stadium on their way to class in the summer.
-
I liked the idea of the stripe...but not the Zipper. However, I think I agree with you. I PERMANENTLY hate the Zipper after a comment like that.

What a horrible weekend of #MACtion. Good lord. Two teams (Easter Michigan and freaking Ball State) lost to FCS teams; which should add to The BIG-10 problems...because Ball St almost beat Iowa...and Iowa lost this week...but anyways. Marshall completely annihilated the Bobkittens, Cincinnati and Baylor both annihilated their MAC opponents (Buffalo and Toledo). In unsurprising fashion, the Michigan Wolverines struggled early against the mighty Miami Redhawks, CMU fell to Syracuse in blowout fashion. The only silver lining on this day is that UMass almost beat Vanderbilt. But Almost only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. We gotta watch those UMass minuetmen though, I don't like where they are on our schedule. Last home game of the season for us, where we play our rival Can't State (who also go completely annihilated this week), it SCREAMS trap game. Edit: Eastern michigan Lost to Old Dominion which is no longer FCS
