If you were the Athletic Director...
clarkwgriswold replied to NWAkron's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
I think sometimes there's a very simple factor that makes it tough to keep local kids here- some kids want to go away for school. -
Yes, the guy came off as an arrogant tool.
-
I also remember a kid throwing a ball in Dreiling's face and the kid from Ewing's team breaking the backboard dunking in warmups. As I recall, Troy Taylor and Ronnie Stokes' team won that one.

If you were the Athletic Director...

I want someone old and set in his ways. I want no in game adjustments and a commitment to run the same offense and defense regardless of the talent or opponent. He should also be awful with the press and alumni. -
In four seasons at Ohio, Groce was 85–56 overall and 34–30 in Mid-American Conference games. Not an overwhelmingly successful MAC career, other than the tournament appearances.

Listened to Joe Dunn's show on the way home and he was speaking to a former Huggins assistant. I believe his last name was Moeller. He indicated a large number of people have shown interest in the UA job. He also repeatedly belittled Williams for having to hire a search firm. According to this guy, every AD should have a list of 5 or 6 guys always handy in the event that a coach moves on, and that search firms are just a way for an AD to cover his @$$. The guy was also a big proponent of Groce as he knows Ohio and has head coaching experience.

Here's an old blurb about the Groce- Steve French animosity from the OU forum website- "Akron play-by-play shill Steve French has a TV program on local access cable every Monday night. Last night he made a point of badmouthing the Bobcats' Top 25 ranking and was called on it by an irate Ohio fan. French then went into this weird story about how everyone in the league knows that John Groce had an obsession with Keith Dambrot and that Groce was badmouthing Dambrot to anyone who would listen, including high school coaches and parents of potential recruits. Strangely, when he was asked how he knew this to be the case he said that the Ohio radio broadcaster told him - in fact, said the broadcaster informed him on more than one occasion that Groce was belittling Dambrot to players and staff."

Sometimes, ignorance is bliss! One thing you could be sure of is that it was never going to be a zone with the UA defense (one of my pet peeves along with how they handled ball screens!).

Has to be good for recruiting. A 7 foot tall Hall of Famer in your living room has to leave an impresssion.

In another blast to my aging ego, I first saw Patrick Ewing at Copley High School in the All-American Cage Classic around 1980-81. Damn, I am old.

Zach- you could at least take a position and stop being so wishy washy.

Oh God no! I follow Georgetown basketball as my son is a GU grad and JT3 has been a nightmare. For years, he's taken some of the most athletic talent in the country and attempted to implement an offense who's primary purpose was to give unathletic squads a chance to beat athletic teams. Without his daddy he'd never have obtained or retained that job. I agree he might well be successful elsewhere, oddly enough in a mid-major setting, but he's nearly killed GU basketball.

Could you guys debate Boals and the OSU recruiting classes a little more? I don't think any of you has clearly made your point yet and expect some of you might come around to the other side.

I could see a couple of coaches using the Akron job as an opportunity to get more money out of their current schools. Some of the Zips faithful don't want to hear it, but the reasons KD used for leaving and the facility issues we've beaten on for years, are reasons some candidates may not be interested. Certainly, some young up and comers may see it as worthwhile or as a stepping stone, but a head coach like Boals or Stewart may see it as more of a potential lateral. I get a feeling the Zips are going to get someone we haven't considered. Nothing concrete just a feeling, similar to the one I had about KD taking the Duquesne job. As such, I'll take the field in this race. Anyone interested in a thread poll with the top candidates we've referenced?

Nice article in the Beacon today, in the section "Amatuer sports success stories" about Anthony Stewart.

I'll give you that it's potential, but I see Hughes as being more of a valuable and rounded big as he develops. He was actually pretty good early when he played. I think Poke sees a lot less time this past season if Hughes doesn't get hurt as Hughes appeared ahead of him on the depth chart early. Poke is a nice player, maybe my favorite Zip this year. I love the kid's effort, but he's a think power forward and I don't see him ever be more than a 15 to 20 minute a game rebounder and shot blocker where I see Hughes as a 12 or 13 point 8 rebound guy someday.

I agree that the Zips recent history is very good, but this team is losing 3 starters, two of its top reserves (Williams and Dunn Martin) and possibly the best returning big man (Hughes). Not a sunken ship, but not ideal. Stony Brook lost 3 seniors but was otherwise pretty solid and coming off of an NCAA bid.

As I recall, Boals walked into a great situation. Coaching changes usually follow a coach doing well and the new coach walking into something good or they follow a low point in a program that results in the predecessor getting canned. Boals did the first, taking over for a successful coach who had just taken the program to its first NCAA tournament. Oddly, the UA job is really neither of these common situations, but with every kid that transfers out, it gets closer to the latter.

I'm a little damn tired of the "forever a Zip" BS.

Duquesne Basketball Coach Keith Dambrot
clarkwgriswold replied to Valpo Zip's topic in Off Topic, Smack & Jokes
Don't get me wrong guys, I'm not saying anyone quit. Just saying the Zips could have played better in that final. -
Dambrot says 'yes' to Duquesne this time

Gee Keith, thanks for quitting on our challenge and taking up theirs. Goodbye riddance. -

I will agree Kent earned it, but the Zips helped. First, they had zero fire. Second, I saw no adjustments from the 1st PCCC game at the JAR and the MAC championship game. Most importantly, they took Kwan out of the game and the Zips made no adjustments to try to free him up. -
Akron Beacon Head Coaching Search

I done been hoodwinked! -
I don't know if Boals had anything to do with it, but the Buckeyes primary recruiting coup in the last 25 years was when Mike Conley, Sr. delivered up his kid and Greg Oden to Columbus. Other than that, the Buckeyes recruiting has been hot and cold.

What would be really interesting is PCCC garnishing old Geno's UA salary for their judgment out of the Bradley related litigation.
